Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation was used to examine the structural evolution in equiatomic alloys containing two to six elements during various heat treatments. According to the radial distribution function (RDF), after undergoing a rapid quench from the melt the alloys of two to four elements have an amorphous structure. However, when the number of elements exceeds four, the melt-quenched alloys have a liquid structure. From the RDF patterns it is found that the peaks become more diffuse with an increasing number of elements (n), and the distance of each peak increases with increasing n, except for n = 3. The peak broadness and peak distance of the RDF patterns relate to the diversity of the atomic sizes, the random occupation of sites by different elements and the free volume. Two-dimensional Fourier transformation of the atomic configurations in the equiatomic alloys revealed that the configuration becomes less disordered after annealing at 500 K, but more disordered after annealing at 700K. This is considered to result from the competition between the lowering of the packing energy and the maximizing of the mixing entropy. Since the latter becomes more important at higher temperatures, a higher degree of randomness among different kinds of atoms is expected. The simulation results infer a substantial random (entropy) effect is brought about in equiatomic alloys with a higher number of elements.
