Abstract:Objective To investigate whether the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index( WOMAC) can actually evaluate the multiple joints function status of the adult KasinBeck disease( KBD) patients of Aba Tibetan area in China. Methods From September to December2010,the adult KBD patients in Rangtang county of Aba Tibetan area in China were investigated. The Visual analogue Scale( VAS) was used to evaluate the severity of pain in each large joint of the patients. The status of deformity and the motion limitation of the suffered joints in patients were also recorded.WOMAC was used to evaluate the function status of the patients. Spearman rank correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between the WOMAC and the severity of each joint of the patients suffered from KBD. Results 426 patients were investigated; 414 questionnaires were completed; the response rate was 97. 2%; the accomplishing rate was 100%. 92. 7% patients suffered from KBD in multiple joints of both upper and lower limbs. The most frequently suffered joints in order were knee, wrist, elbow, ankle, shoulder, and hip. The most severely suffered joints in order were knee, elbow, ankle, wrist, shoulder and hip. The WOMAC score mainly correlated to the VAS score of pain and the range of motion of knee joints( R =0. 515,P < 0. 001; R = 0. 478,P < 0. 001). No statistical correlation or weak correlation was found between WOMAC and other joints, especially the joints in upper limbs. Conclusion The KBD patients of Aba Tibetan area in China suffered multiple joints' impairments in both upper and lower limbs. WOMAC could only reflect the function status of knee joints of the KBD patients. It is not suitable to use WOMAC to evaluate both upper and lower limb joints function status of the KBD patients.
