An exploration and Analysis of the Fish Taxonomic System in MinZhongHaicuoShu

Abstract:At present,Min Zhong Haicuo Shu is the first book on aquatic fauna in China.The author,TU Benjun,grouped the aquatic fauna into three to five taxonomic categories.He proposed two main taxonomic methods: The first one is to select a fish as a model for a group,and then other fishes were described comparing with the model usually using the term "like".The "model-like relationship" is the taxonomic indicator.The second one is to define a name for a group,namely the "fish lineage" is used as a taxonomic indicator.In addition,other indicators were supplemented such as the body color,organ characteristics,behavioral characteristics,and so on.Compared with the modern taxonomic system,the fish taxonomic system of MinZhongHaicuoShu has the following characteristics: its focus on individual,and less clarifty of the boundary between the low-order categories;the fact that its taxonomic indicators are more macro than the modern system,which may be due to the fact that anatomy was not well developed in Chinese ancient country;however,genetic relationship was still covered and the Chinese traditional food culture was highlighted when the species was introduced.
