Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate diagnostic value of body mass index(BMI) in screening and diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).METHODS A total of 1574 subjects (1237 male and 337 female) who experienced polysomnography(PSG) during 2004~2011 in the Third Hospital of Peking University ENT department were included. The diagnostic value and reference standard of BMI in both male and female were analyzed by receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve. RESULTS 1.A positive relationship between AHI and BMI was detected, both in male and female subjects, with Pearson coefficients 0.449 and 0.442(P0.001) In male population,AHI will increase by 3.05(95%CI 2.71~3.40) when BMI increase every 1 unit;In female population,AHI will increase by 1.95(95%CI 1.48~2.40) when BMI increase every 1 unit.2.Results of ROC analysis showed a favorable value of BMI in diagnosing OSHAS.In male population, area under curve (AUC) was 0.747(95%CI 0.714~0.780) with a best cutoff value 25.3 kg/m~2.The sensitivity and specificity in man were 74%and 61%,respectively;In female population, AUC was 0.697(95%CI 0.641~0.752) with a best cutoff value 24.7 kg/m~2.The sensitivity and specificity were 68%and 61%.CONCLUSION BMI seemed like a considerable parameter in diagnosing OSAHS,and it was a bit better in male population than female.
