Abstract:Duan-Yun is not a short passage, but the shortage of corresponding items for expatiation in the writing of a Fu, in which the representation of the objects is obstructed. Further more, the relationship between Yun and literary thought is discussed.

Abstract:It pointed out based on Dufu's poems,Dufu's thatched cottage created complicated garden spaces and abundant garden artistic conception.From four aespects including the garden location,architectural layout,calligraphy and inscribed boards and plant disposition,the space arrangements such as the coexistence of virtuality and reality,transforming the reality into virtuality,harmonizing reality and virtuality,as well as the landscape artistic conception which blending poetry into garden and recreating artistic conception as described in Dufu's poetry were deeply analyzed.

Abstract:The relation between Du Fu and Yan Wu can find two statements, which are poles apart. One is the two of them cherish brotherly affection for each other; and another is that Du Fu's indiscreet remarks at Yan Wu under the influence of alcohol, over which Yan Fu nursed a grudge, courted his own destruction. Some arguers distort the original meaning of Du Fu's poems and draw a forced analogy in confirmation of their enmity arising from tiny grievance. Some regard something wrong with their rank in such hierarchy as the evidence of their petty grievance without the consideration that Du Fu worked under Yan Wu. Others attribute unreasonably Du Fu's resignation to that there are conflict between them, rather than his thought at that time. Still others infer they are at odds for each other according as the feeling in Du Fu's poem written in commemoration of Yan Wu is not sincere and earnest. This is also a case of frame-up.

Abstract:This article focused on one sect of historical sources in Yunlu Manchao, an academic work compiled by Zhao Yanwei of South Song dynasty. It was from a note of one map about Chang’an city written by Lü Dafang of North Song dynasty. Mainly I interpuncted this source again for there were many faults in several printed editions of Yunlu Manchao and revised the characters referring to the former studies. I also pointed out that it was viable to restore the note by Lü Dafang based on Yunlu Manchao.

Abstract:The misunderstanding of Yang Xiong(53 B.C.-18) on the crition of fu(verse-style prose),i.e.,A poet's fu must observe the principle of beauty.,and his mistakes in criticism,reflect the deviation of theories on the genre from its writing practice during the Han dynasty(202 B.C.-220).Yang's writing pattern as shown in his four famous works of fu,characterized by satire via eulogy,is further proof of the embarrassment faced by theories of fu in practice.Yang's failure in writing and his mistakes in criticism resulted from his theories are the embodiment of the poetic and educational points of view of Confucianism in the theory and practice of fu writing,heralding the historical turn of the genre to aesthetics later.

Abstract:Literature-criticizing fu is not only an outstanding phenomenon in the history of fu(or ci)-writing,but an important part itself in our ancient literary theory.The appearance of literature-criticizing fu relates to the developing of the style-criticizing,but fu-criticizing fu connects much with the imperial examination system,in which fu-writing plays an important role.The gist of most literature-criticizing fu is that shi (poetry) and fu are of the same resource,and that they all should express the Confucian Tao (doctrines).But as literature and art,literature-criticizing fu,when describing literary theory,shows its relationships with the fu-style:elaborating,structure,and Zeitgeist.And the form of antithesis and rhyme also gives the readers aesthetic experience.

Abstract:Abstract: In 'On Variations of the Classical Chinese Literary Genre terminchinesescript (Fu) in Literary History,' the authors analyze the representation of the classical Chinese literary genre Fu, or namely, rhapsode, in Chinese literary histories compiled in English. A unique classical literary genre, Fu commonly appears in classical Chinese literature as well as in aesthetics and philosophy, thus constituting an important part in Chinese literature in all periods from ancient to contemporary. However, Fu falls outside the quartered-division of modern western stylistics, so is bound to cause problems in the compilation of a literary history in the Anglophone literary culture, as is the case in Sinology. This paper argues that variations caused in the translation of the name Fu and its configuration set-up in the English context have resulted in the under exploration of its full meanings in existing relevant studies, which necessitates future research for the sake of substantially changing the peripheral status of Chinese literature in the arena of world literature.

Abstract:Abstract The author argues that the Greek tradition of ekphrasis and the Chinese genre of fu 賦 share at least two essential characteristics: they are devoted to exhaustive descriptions and are manifestly nonmetaphorical. The six texts under scrutiny—Mei Sheng's fu poem “Qi fa,” book 6 of Quintilian's Institutio oratoria, Zuo Si's preface to his “Sandu fu,” Xunzi's analysis of Zhou tombs and funerary rituals in his “Li lun” essay, the “Shield of Achilles” episode in the Iliad, and the metaphorical section of Sima Xiangru's “Shanglin fu”—all employ a similar set of rhetorical strategies but with different emphases. A reading of one in light of the others reveals new information about Chinese and Western theories of representation and metaphoricity. For example, Homer makes his audience alternate between belief and disbelief in the scenes engraved on Achilles's shield. A similar to-and-fro movement in Xunzi's ekphrastic text is configured very differently. By contrast, the abrupt change in mode of expression from ekphrasis to metaphor at the end of “Shanglin fu” emphasizes the key themes of that poem: the shift from excess to frugality, from hedonistic pleasure seeking to ritualized asceticism, and from aristocratic (and thus vulgar) display of wealth to a royal celebration of purity and introspection.
A New Study of Liangdu Fu

Abstract:Considering the status of Mei Cheng's Qi Fa, Sima Xiangru's Tianzi Youlie Fu and Yang Xiong's Ganquan Fu, historians of Classical Chinese Literature don't pay enough attention to Ban Gu's Liangdu Fu which can't be substituted in history. Liangdu Fu solves the conflicts between aesthetical taste and political-ethical concerns of traditional Da Fu, corrects its structural defects, embodies Ban Gu's high consciousness that determines the nature of Han-dynasty and the direction of Han Fu or Han Literature. Rather than the works above, Liangdu Fu does characterize Han Fu. So we should think highly of Liangdu Fu which is the landmark in the history of Han Fu.

Abstract:Dai Fugu is one of the Jiang Hu poets in the South Song Dynasty.His anthology is named Shi Ping Shiji ,but not all his poems is concluded in it. Many scholars keep working at compilation of his lost poems these years,but there are still some careless omissions. Shi Yuan is an important storehouse materials in compiling lost poems of Song Dynasty.The author gathers all the lost poems of Dai Fugu's anthology in Shi Yuan, indicates some flaws in Shi Yuan and The index of Shi Yuan, and corrects the mistakes of the scholars'concerned conclusions before.

Abstract:With the quick and deep development of globalization, cultural communication is deepening and covering various aspects. How to translate classical Chinese works not only comprehensively and precisely, but also easy for people who without cultural background to understand is becoming a heated problem. The affluent and high-valued minds in Lunyu almost ranks to the top among ancient Chinese works, and language in it is concise, advocating using a few words to express propounding thought. Therefore, fuzziness becomes one of its typical characteristics, however, the related research about translation strategies, reasons why translating in that way, and effects on it are lacking. This paper will under the direction of theories of fuzzy language and cultural context, picking representative instances mainly from Gu Hongming’s translation version to make a brief analysis. It comes out that main translation strategies are noting, paraphrasing, expounding, and omitting. Plus, reasons resulting in fuzziness will be illustrated, such as original characteristics of language itself,writing style, different culture backgrounds and so on. Moreover, it owns both benefits and drawbacks, such as providing more possibilities for translators to translate in the way which they believe is the best but there still have so much disputation among different versions. The aim of this thesis is through the deliberate statement, giving a little enlightenment towards other Chinese traditional works’ translation, especially fuzziness’s translation.

Abstract:Since the middle of the 20th century, “Wen Fu” has been translated into the Western world by many Chinese and foreign translators, which vastly promoted the spread and acceptance of ancient Chinese literary theory in the West and was of great significance to facilitate the exchange and cooperation between Chinese and foreign academic circles on the study of “Wen Fu”. By the comparison of Sam Hamill’s and Stephen Owen’s English versions of “Wen Fu”, this paper is designed to explore the translators’ translation purpose, analyze the differences in translation strategies, and expound the discrepancies in word selection so as to extend the existing studies of “Wen Fu”.

Abstract:Lu Xun held in his A Brief History of Traditional Chinese Fiction (Zhongguo Xiaoshuo Shilue) that the five short stories including Daye Shiyiji (A Recollected Story in the Reign of Daye), Meifei Zhuan (Imperial Concubine Mei) were actually written in the Song Dynasty. Due to the fact that LU Xun did not offer any concrete proof for the argument, later scholars have been doubting even negating this viewpoint. The present paper reaffirmed LU Xun's viewpoint mainly by way of such textual research as pointing out some words and phrases including names of some emperors which were avoided as taboo in the Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:Du Fu, one of the two most celebrated poets of the Tang, was very much a product of his era in the way that he found a usable past in Han-dynasty verse, episodes, and people. From 750 on, his writings were replete with allusions to the Han, some subtle and others more forthright. Taken together, these allusions suggest his firm beliefs in the course of history determined by human moral agency, in morality as "a man's own charge"; also in the role of fate determining the succession of dynasties, even as he deplored the workings of capricious fate on individual lives. Such beliefs are unremarkable in content, being much closer to conventional Tang concepts of the individual than most commentaries on Du Fu allow.
From Metropolis Fu to Pastoral Shi--Pondering on the Literal Creation of Traditional Fu and Shi

Abstract:The creating of Chinese ancient literature originated from Ci (a form of classical poetry) of Chu Dynasty and Fu (descriptive prose interspersed with verse) of Han Dynasty, and then the penta-word Shi (poetry) of Wei and Jin Dynasties, which formed the literary tradition centered on Shi and Fu in Pre-Tang period. During this period, the Fu writers represented by Ban Gu wrote a series of metropolis Fu, and Shi writers like Tao Yuan-ming composed a series of pastoral Shi. While the former is regarded as the orthodox Fu, the latter is hailed as exquisite masterpieces. Both metropolis Fu and pastoral Shi are artistic peaks with numerous followers. With the transition from metropolis Fu to pastoral Shi, this literary tradition of Shi and Fu also differentiates the metropolitan literature and rural literature, which reflect the different material surroundings and spiritual features. Reconsideration of the artistic value of Shi and Fu is evidently elicited in this change.
