Abstract:AIM:To evaluate the therapeutic effect and complications after combined operation for proliferative diabetic retinopathy complicated with cataract.METHODS:A retrospective analysis was done including therapeutic effects and complications after combined operation for proliferative diabetic retinopathy complicated with cataract in 107 eyes.RESULTS:A total of 107 eyes were followed up for 3-36 months, with a mean of(13.5±2.5)months.Visual improvement was achieved in 91 eyes(85.0%).The postoperative visual acuity was ≥0.1 in 40 eyes(37.4%).Intraocular lens implantation was performed in 35 eyes.Visual acuity remained unchanged in 10 eyes(9.4%)and decreased in 6 eyes(5.6%).The best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) was lower than 0.01 in 22 eyes, between 0.01 and 0.05 in 21 eyes, between 0.05 and 0.1 in 24 eyes, between 0.1 and 0.3 in 35 eyes and better than 0.3 in 5 eyes. The principal causes for vision descent were maculopathy or ischemic macular injuries.Besides, main complications of combined operation were corneal edema, transient high intraocular pressure, marked increase of fibrous exudation, and posterior capsular opacification(PCO).All of them could be cured by itself or medical therapy.CONCLUSION:Combined operation is an effective therapy available for proliferative diabetic retinopathy complicated with cataract.
