Epidemiological Features of Varicella among Primary and Middle School Students in Xicheng District of Beijing, 2007-2012

Abstract:Objective To describe epidemiological features of varicella among the students in middle schools and primary schools in Xicheng district of Beijing, and to provide scientific evidence for the adjustment of current disease control strategies. Methods Data of varicella cases were collected through China information system for diseases control and prevention and case investigation form during 2007 to 2012. Microsoft Office Excel 2003 and SPSS 16.0 software were employed in the statistical analysis. Results There were total 1 643 cases reported among primary and middle school students in Xicheng District during this period. The annual incidence rates were from 2.89‰ to 4.72‰. Most cases were mild and 99.15% cases suffered mild and moderate rash. The incidence peak of the disease occurred in March and May. Among the cases, the ratio of male and female was 1.24∶1. The incidence of primary school students was significant higher than that of middle school students. There was an increasing tendency toward cases of breakthrough varicella.Conclusion The varicella cases presented a remarkable seasonal distribution and showed two incidence peaks. The proportion of cases with varicella vaccination history in Xicheng district was higher than that in Beijing. The growing number of mild cases made a barrier to the symptoms surveillance, and also was the main reason for disease outbreak in school. The further vaccination strategy of varicella should be explored based on the results of seroprevalence study.
