Abstract:Sungryemun, burnt and collapsed by fire early this year, threw South Koreans into a great grief Some believed it came as a shock which could compare with that of the collapse of World Trade Center in September 11,2001 to US citizens. As tire southern gate of Seoul, the capital of South Korea,it is worthy of the title of the No.1 National Treasure. The name derives from four virtues of Mencius' theory-benevolence,righteousness,propriety and wisdom, which can be reflected by the names of the city gates:the east(the Xing Ren Gate)、the west(the Dun Yi Gate)、the south(the Sungryemun)and the north(the Hong Zhi Gate). These four gates, together with the Clock Tower(the"Puxinge")which is in the centre of Seoul, combine into what is called"the five constants"of the Confucian idea, that is,benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and fidelity.Among eight gates of Seoul,Sungnyemun is not only the largest one but also the most important main gate.Being the southernmost gate of the original walls surrounding Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty,it is widely known as"South Gate".As the wooden construction boasting of the most remote age in Seoul,Sungryemun is one of the typical building in Yi Dynasty as well as the symbolic ancient architecture of Seoul and even of South Korea. The construction began in 1395(the fourth year of Li Chenggui's accession to the throne)when the Kingdom of Korea's Li Dynasty had just been founded, and completed in 1398(the seventh year of Li Chenggui's accession to the throne).Over the past 600 years,it experienced several refurbishments. The present article will illustrate in detail the architectural features of wooden constructions of Sungryemun from the perspective of an architectural scholar.
