Abstract:The variation of two important orbit parameters a(semi-axis) and e(eccentricity) for low-attitude satellites is decided by the atmosphere drag and the value |J2l-1/J2|,where J2l-1,(l≥2) are the odd zonal coefficients and J2 is the oblateness. The density of the atmosphere on the mars is about 0.007 of that of the earth, and the moon has no atmosphere at all.The values |J2l-1/J2| for the earth, the moon and the mars are 10-3,10-1 and 10-2 respectively. Therefore the variation of a and e for the earth's orbiters is mainly decided by the atmosphere drag. The variation of a and e for the moon's orbiters is mainly decided by J2l-1,(l≥2),and has great dependence on the orbit inclination i.For the mars' orbiters, the variation of a and e is also decided by J2l-1,(l≥2) due to the weak atmosphere drag.I.e.the life of the orbits is limited by large variation in the pericenter height hp caused by the long periodic variation of eccentricitye. However, the relation with the orbit inclination i is different from that of the moon's orbiters. This paper made a theoretical study of the problems above. The orbit variation characteristics of low-attitude mars' orbiters are given.Numerical computations are also used to check the theoretical results.Numerical results show that the amplitude of variation of eccentricity e can reach 0.02~0.03.For a near circular orbit with height smaller than 100km,the orbiter will soon collide with the mars due to the reduction of the pericenter height to zero. This phenomenon mainly happens for polar satellites. With the reduction of i,the amplitude of variation of e reduces too. This property shows obvious difference from the moon's orbiters.
