Abstract:Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a clinical syndrome which is characterized with a cluster of the following cardiovascular risk factors: hypertension, obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, etc. The major consequence of MS are cardiovascular damages such as pathological changes in cardiac structure and function, en route to heart failure, and coronary atherosclerotic heart disease. And these damages caused by MS are much more detrimental than any single component among the cluster of risk factors. Recent studies have indicated autophagy is important in the onset and development of MS cardiovascular injury. Autophagy is closely correlated with MS cardiovascular diseases inuced by obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation. In this article, the pivotal role and pathogenesis of autophagy in MS cardiovascular damages are briefly reviewed based on international frontier research.
