Abstract:We tackle the problem of a biped running over varied and unknown terrain. Running is a necessary skill for a biped moving fast, but it increases the challenge of dynamic balance, especially when a biped is running on varied terrain without terrain information (due to the difficulty and cost of obtaining the terrain information in a timely manner). To address this issue, a new dynamic indicator called the sustainable running criterion is developed. The main idea is to sustain a running motion without falling by maintaining the system states within a running-feasible set, instead of running on a periodic limit cycle gait in the traditional way. To meet the precondition of the criterion, the angular moment about the center of gravity (COG) is restrained close to zero at the end of the stance phase. Then to ensure a small state jump at touchdown on the unknown terrain, the velocity of the swing foot is restrained within a specific range at the end of the flight phase. Finally, the position and velocity of the COG are driven into the running-feasible set. A five-link biped with underactuated point foot is considered in simulations. It is able to run over upward and downward terrain with a height difference of 0.15 m, which shows the effectiveness of our control scheme.

Abstract:This paper presents a segmentation method for human locomotion. The research on the rules of human locomotion plays an important role for the analysis of human movement strategy. We collected locomotion data from eighteen volunteers by motion capture system(MCS), and found that the measured stride length and frequency with speed had a mutation in the critical point between walking and running. To solve this problem, a segmentation method is proposed to describe the two gaits motion while the continuous formula is not suitable for using again. Especially, a running formula is proposed by introducing a compression of virtual leg based on the elastic linear inverted pendulum model(ELIPM), which can accurately describe the relationship between stride length, frequency and speed. By experimental comparisons, the proposed method can reduce 77% of the statistical error than Alexander's one, which indicates this method is an effective approach and can uniform the motion rules for human walking and running.

Abstract:Passive dynamic locomotion is well-known for its fabulous advantages in energy efficiency. In this paper we focus on the level passive running problem of a kneed biped. The knee joints of our robot model are elastic with torque springs. So energy dissipation is avoided at landing. Passive gaits have been firstly demonstrated on this kneed biped in this paper, yet they are not stable. Note that there is only one actuation at the hip joint. The robot thus has three degrees of under actuation, which increases the difficulty of control design. We derive an event-based control law to stabilize the system, and add energy shaping part to enlarge the basin of attraction as well as provide additional robustness. The effectiveness of our approach has been verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of fast dynamic walking of an under-actuated biped robot ,a stable walking control method and strategy was presented for a planar under-actuated biped robot . Firstly ,the dynamic characteristics of the model of an inverted pendulum model was analysed with body inertia and the attitude stabilizing controller was designed according to the dynamic model and the attitude information . T hen , the robot could keep the body posture stability in the continuous walking .Secondly ,according to the dynamics of under-actuated quantity and the feedback of walking velocity ,the walking velocity controller was designed .Through adjusting the steps ,the robot could realize continuous walking with stable speed .Finally ,the experiment was carried out on a biped walk-ing robot and the validity of the control strategy was verified .

Abstract:This paper presents a gait optimization method to generate the locomotion pattern for biped and discuss its stability. The main contribution of this paper is a newly proposed energy-based stability criterion, which permits the dynamic stable walking and could be straight-forwardly generalized to different locomotion scenarios and biped robots. The gait optimization problem is formulated subject to the constraints of the whole-body dynamics and kinematics. The constraints are established based on the modelling of bipedal hybrid dynamical systems. Following the whole-body modelling, the system energy is acquired and then applied to create the stability criterion. The optimization objective is also established on the system energy. The gait optimization is solved by being converted to a large-scale programming problem, where the transcription accuracy is improved via the spectral method. To further reduce the dimensionality of the large-scale problem, the whole-body dynamics is re-constructed. The generalization of the optimized gait is improved by the design of feedback control. The optimization examples demonstrate that the stability criterion naturally leads to a cyclic biped locomotion, though the periodicity was not previously imposed. Two simulation cases, level ground walking and slope walking, verify the generalization of the stability criterion and feedback control. The stability analyses are carried out by investigating the motions of centre of gravity and centre of pressure. It is revealed that if the tracked speed is above 0.3 m/s or the biped accelerates/climbs the slope, the stability criterion accomplishes the dynamic stable walking, where zero moment point criterion is not strictly complied.

Abstract:This paper formulates the mathematical model of a biped that is capable of dynamic walking gaits. The model consists of hip actuation, segmented legs, flat feet and torsional spring based passive ankle stiffness. Using numerical simulations on the proposed model, we find that from the view of stability, there is optimal foot-ankle ratio of the flat-foot bipeds. The results indicate that the human foot proportion is indeed better optimized for dynamic bipedal walking than that of apes, further suggesting the current state of human foot is to some extent the product of positive selection for more stable bipedal locomotion during the evolution of the foot.

Abstract:Self-paced treadmill is the key human-robot interactive equipment for virtual reality. The current study focuses on the jumping interaction control technology for self-paced treadmill to enrich the application scenarios. For the purpose to analyze the stability of human jump landing, a novel variable stiffness spring-mass loaded inverted pendulum model is proposed, which takes into account the combined effects of lower limb bones and joint muscles. Experimental results show that the proposed model can realize the modeling of the mass center motion trajectory and the analysis of the jumping stable domain, the accuracy of stability recognition is 93.0%. Based on the proposed model and the stability analysis, the jumping interaction control strategies for the self-paced treadmill are proposed to improve human stability during jumping landing. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the stability of human jump landing significantly. Meanwhile, the proposed method reduces the torque of lower limb joints effectively. The peak torque of the knee joint reduces from 230 N/m to 210.7 N/m, and the peak torque of the ankle joint reduces from 143.6 N/m to 131 N/m, which is expected to lower the risk of injury.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the local stability of a flat-foot limit cycle walking model with compliant ankle joints, and analyze the effects of ankle stiffness and foot inertial and geometric parameters on disturbance rejection. These results can provide a further understanding of local behaviors of different phases in one step and guidelines for stiffness control and flat foot design towards stable walking of bipedal robots.

Abstract:To realize the stable walking cycle of passive biped robot,this paper presents a method to find the fixed point and a detailed analysis on the effect of the change of mechanical parameters of the passive walking model and slope gradient on the existence of stable fixed point is carried out.The effect for each parameter at the given initial conditions on the speed of converging to the stable cycle walking and the effect of changing status of stable fixed point from the change of the parameters are investigated.It is concluded that the smaller mass for legs,a higher location for the center of mass,the right radius of foot,the larger moment of inertia as well as the right slope gradient are beneficial for improving the local stability of the passive robot.

Abstract:This paper presents a seven-link dynamic walking model that is more close to human beings. We add hip actuation, upper body, flat feet and compliant ankle joints to the model. Walking sequence of the flat-foot walker has several sub-streams that form bipedal walking with dynamic series of phases, which is different with the motion of round-foot and point-foot models. We investigate the characteristics of three different walking gaits with different step lengths. Comparison of these walking gaits in walking velocity, efficiency and stability reveals the relation between step length and walking performance. Experimental results indicate that the gait which is more close to human normal walking achieves higher stability and energetic efficiency.
Stability and adaptability of passivity-based bipedal locomotion with flat feet and ankle compliance

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Over the past years, several studies have investigated how much of the human walking motion can be modeled with passive dynamics (e.g. Garcia et al., 1998; Kuo, 2002; Wisse et al., 2004). However, only a few studies have been done on a flat foot shape in passive dynamic models (e.g. Kwan Hubbard, 2007). These studies proposed that the flat foot with a geometric parameter (foot length) can introduce a toe-strike collision in addition to the heel-strike impulse and influence the passive dynamics of walking. It has been investigated that flat feet can distribute the energy loss per step over these two collisions. Additionally, experiments on human subjects and robot prototypes revealed that the tendon in ankle joint is one mechanism that favors locomotor economy (Fukunaga et al., 2001; Collins et al., 2005). However, no effort has been made to analyze the adaptability and stability of adding compliant ankles to passive dynamic models that have flat feet. The general goal of this study was to provide insight on the role of ankle compliance in human walking, by using a passivity-based bipedal locomotion model that is more close to the human motion in view of walking stability and adaptability.

Abstract:The underactuated biped walking robot is one of the hotspot in research of humanoid robot.Aimed at biped robot with a passive ankle,the five-bar model was established.The model of dynamics analysis was introduced.According to the principle of Lagrangian,single support dynamics model was established and also the double support dynamics model based on collision.The complete underactuated biped walking robot dynamics model was established.And introduced the robot gait planning.Planned the time-invariant gait of the underactuated robot.By using Bessel polynomial,this paper fitted out the trajectory of virtual constraint.And gave the algorithm of the underactuated robot gait planning.Used the limit cycle method to verify the Poincare return-mapping fixed point's stability.The stability of the limit cycle was also proved.Verified the stability of the robot gait.

Abstract:This study has proposed a control method to make the biped robot jump. Our proposed method is based on ensuring the overall dynamic balance through the complete jumping cycle, Gaits of Center of Mass (CoM) and foot for the biped robot are planned in standing phase and flight phase, respectively. Gait of Center of Mass (CoM) for the biped robot is planned by solving dynamic equation based on cart-curved table model and Zero Moment Point (ZMP) equation is discredited in standing phase and Center of Mass (CoM) for the biped robot takes a projectile motion in flight phase. Rotation of the foot leads to under actuation due to the passive degree of freedom at the heel during landing phase and at the toe during takeoff phase which results in no using ZMP criterion. Compliance between the foot and ground is modeled as a spring-damper system. Torque control to the ankle joint is used for modifying the biped robot balance. At the same time, inclination of the upper body is controlled by using Upper Body Posture Control. Forward jumping motion is experimentally realized on a biped robot. © 2011 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Abstract:In this paper we use an inverted pendulum with harmonic vibrations of the pivot point to model the walking motion of a pedestrian. The stability analysis of the inverted pendulum is carried out to understand dynamics of a pedestrian. Our theoretical research shows that not only the ratio between the lateral and vertical amplitudes of the pivot point, but also the ratio between the lateral and vertical frequencies of the pivot point has significant effects on the stability of the inverted pendulum. The theoretical results are consistent with everyday experiences and observations as well as numerical simulations. Our research indicates that it is proper to applying the inverted pendulum model to analyze to dynamics of a pedestrianâ€™s walking motion.

Abstract:Stability is of great significance in the theoretical framework of biped locomotion. Real-time control and walking patterns planning are on the premise that the robot works in the stable condition. In this paper, we address the crucial issue of the locomotion stability based on the modified Poincare return map and the hybrid automata. Not akin to the traditional stability criteria, i.e. , the Zero Moment Point (ZMP) and the Center of Mass (CoM), the modified Poincare return map is more appropriate for both dynamic walking and non-periodic walking. Moreover, a novel high-level reinforcement learning methodology, so-called active PI 2 CMA-ES, is proposed in this paper to plan the exoskeleton locomotion. The proposed learning methodology demonstrates that the locomotion of the exoskeleton is asymptotically stable according to the modified Poincare return map criterion. Finally, the proposed learning methodology is tested by the Lower Extremity Augmentation Device (LEAD) and its effectiveness is verified by the experiments.

Abstract:Passive dynamic walking has been developed as a possible explanation for the efficiency of the human gait. In this paper, we investigate the effects of foot shape on energetic efficiency and dynamic stability of passivity-based bipeds with upper body. Three walking models with point feet, round feet and flat feet were presented. Each model has an upper body constrained to keep midway between legs. We use computer simulations to find which foot shapes are indeed optimal in view of energetic efficiency and dynamic stability for a passive dynamic biped with upper body. Simulation results indicate that feet improve both the energetic efficiency and dynamic stability of passive dynamic bipeds.

Abstract:The development of studies on passive dynamic walking is reviewed briefly.The nondimensional equations of a planar straight leg passive dynamic biped model with round feet are derived and a simulation is carried out.The basin of attraction of the model obtained by the cell mapping method is larger than that of point feet models,proposed by other researchers.These results indicate that the model can walk stably from an initial state far from the fixed point.

Abstract:Though people's usual gaits tend to be natural and simple, the theoretical modeling and analysis are complicated based on the remarkable fact that the walking motion is a complex dynamic phenomenon. In this paper, we build a passive dynamic bipedal walking model with flat feet and compliant ankle joints. The bipedal walker travels on a slope actuated by the gravity. We analyze effects of ankle-foot parameters on walking characteristics based on dynamic walking modeling. Simulation results demonstrate that the model can perform stable walking cycle. The effects of ankle-foot parameters on motion characteristics with different ankle stiffness are shown in detail.
