Application of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HAD)among medical outpatients

Abstract:Objective:To apply the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HAD)among medical outpatients in general hospitals and try to develop the norms of HAD in Shanghai.Methods:Two-stage sampling method was used. Firstly,Zhongshan Hospital and Ruijin Hospital were chosen among general hospitals in Shanghai. Secondly,11766 medical outpatients were randomly selected at the ratio of 10:1 in order to be assessed with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.Results:(1)The anxiety scores (F=12.518,P<0.001)and the depression scores (F=28.066,P<0.001)of the HAD were significantly different among different age groups of medical outpatients.(2)The anxiety scores in females were higher than that in males[(3.37±2.81)vs.(3.14±2.62),P<0.001]and no gender differences were found in the depression scores.However,the depression scores in females younger than 60 years were higher than that in males[(3.67±3.01)vs.(3.39±2.91),P=0.038]and the depression scores in males older than 60 years and younger than 70 years were higher than that in females[(5.63±3.86)vs.(4.86±3.70),P<0.001].Conclusion:The norms of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HAD)in Shanghai have been established in this study.The effects of age and gender factors should be paid attention in the application of the HAD among medical outpatients.
