Abstract:We study the band structure and transmission properties of comb-like photonic crystals containing negative-index materials within the frame of the interface response theory. The result shows the existence of a special band gap at low frequency.

Abstract:AbstrcatThe calculation of band structure and analysis of light propagation in photonic crystals are basic and important issues. The plane wave expansion method to calculate band structure and the Floquet-Bloch theory to analyze light propagation in periodic dielectric materials are discussed emphatically. The electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals can be expressed as a series of spacial harmonics. The propagation direction of light in photonic crystals is consistent with wave energy or group velocity. The behavior of light can be analyzed qualitatively by using wave vector diagram.

Abstract:The 1-dimension photonic crystal is descripted by using acoustic technique.MaxwellI equation is reduced to Schrodinger equation if assuming free damping,free current,free magnetism and homogeneity for material,but Schrodinger equation is further reduced to Mathieu equation if deflected index is cosine form.It shows that there are a series of stable zones and unstable zones(stop band)in the plane of parameter δ and e.When,these unstable zones will be reduced to some points in the centre of the stop-bands.The stop-bands widths are obtained by the perturbation techniques.The result shows that the widths of the first order and second order unstable zones depend on the parameters of dielectric and photonic frequency.Only suitable regulating these parameters,the band-structure can be regulated,thus the photonic crystal with a variable properties can be obtained.

Abstract:The influence of material loss is crucial for the design of plasmonic crystals at optical frequencies. Band structure and eigenmodes of plasmonic crystals with the lossy and dispersive materials are investigated in this work. The solution to the eigenvalue problem is based on the wave equation and periodic boundary condition. And then examples show that material loss significantly affects the band structure and eigenmodes at the plasmonic resonance frequencies.

Abstract:Properties of photonic band gap and light propagation in one-dimensional multicomponent photonic crystal have been studied with the optical transfer matrix method. We mainly analyze the relation of photonic band-gap property with the arrangement of components, the refractive index and the geometrical thickness. In this study, the methods to change the width and the location of the existing photonic band-gaps in multicomponent photonic crystal are proposed.

Abstract:The negative refraction phenomenon in wavy two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals (PC) is investigated with the isofrequency surfaces of PC and incident medium. The finite-difference time-domain method is used to simulate the negative refraction of incident Gaussian beam with different wavelengths and incident angles. When the incident angle is set at 45 degrees, the linear relation exists between the negative refraction angle and the wavelength within the range from 1485 to 1530nm, which is suitable for the superprism effect. In order to increase the transmission when negative refraction happened at large incident angles, interface projection method is employed.

Abstract:Layered heterostructures combining ordinary and negative refractive index materials are shown to display a new type of photonic band gap corresponding to zero (volume) averaged refractive index. Distinct from band gaps induced by Bragg scattering, the zero-n; gap is invariant upon a change of scale length and is insensitive to disorder that is symmetric in the random variable. A metallic structure that exhibits such a band gap is explicitly designed, and its properties are calculated with accurate finite difference time domain simulations.

We show that this structure can possess a type of photonic gap with zero effective phase (phi(eff)). The zero- phi(eff) gap distinguishes itself from a Bragg gap in that it is invariant with a change of scale length and is insensitive to thickness fluctuation. In contrast to a photonic gap corresponding to zero averaged refractive index, the zero- phi(eff) gap can be made very wide by varying the ratio of the thicknesses of two media. An equivalent transmission-line model is utilized to explain the properties. A photonic quantum-well structure based on zero- phi(eff) gaps is proposed as a multiple channeled filter that is compact and robust against disorder.

Abstract:The properties of photonic quantum-well structures containing negative-index materials are studied theoretically, showing features remarkably better than conventional photonic quantum-well structures. Owning to the zero-n¯ gap of one-dimensional photonic crystals containing negative-index materials, the photonic quantum-well structures can be proposed as a multiple channeled filter which is very weak dependent on incident angle and polarization, and insensitive to the thickness disorder of the barrier photonic crystals.

Abstract:We theoretically deduce the Bragg gap vanishing conditions in one-dimensional photonic crystals and experimentally demonstrate the m=0 band-gap vanishing phenomena at microwave frequencies. In the case of mismatched impedance, the Bragg gap will vanish as long as the discrete modes appear in photonic crystals containing dispersive materials, while for the matched impedance cases, Bragg gaps will always disappear. The experimental results and the simulations agree extremely well with the theoretical expectation. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The explicit dispersion equation for a one-dimensional periodic structure with alternative layers of left-handed material (LHM) and right-handed material (RHM) is given and analyzed. Some abnormal phenomena such as spurious modes with complex frequencies, discrete modes and photon tunnelling modes are observed in the band structure. The existence of spurious modes with complex frequencies is a common problem in the calculation of the band structure for such a photonic crystal. Physical explanation and significance are given for the discrete modes (with real values of wave number) and photon tunnelling propagation modes (with imaginary wave numbers in a limited region).

Abstract:This paper has theoretically studied the characteristic frequencies of band structures in two-dimensional metallic dielectric photonic crystals. It is demonstrated that a large filling fraction benefits the existence of absolute photonic bandgap, while a smaller filling fraction benefits an absolute negative refraction band. In addition, it also finds that the relation between the cut-off frequency of E-polarized wave and the filling fraction exceeding 10% is content with a linear increasing function, whose coefficients are exponential to the normalized lattice constant. These investigations have significant implications for tuning the operational frequencies to desired applications and manufacturing photonic crystals.

Abstract:The design of photonic crystals using novel materials is of great significance for the construction of high-performance, next-generation photonic crystal devices. We propose a universal Band structure-Transmission optimization-Band structure method based on moving asymptotic (MMA) method, which can be widely applied to photonic crystal structures. In this paper, we use the method to optimize the band structure of high temperature superconducting photonic crystal, and obtain a wider photonic bandgap and better band flatness in a specific frequency band. This method avoids the disadvantages of traditional scanning methods such as low efficiency and high resource consumption, allows multi-parameter optimization, and improves the accuracy and effectiveness of band modulation based on the iterative process of numerical calculation. The study provides some insights for the design of novel wide-bandgap optical devices.

Abstract:We present the first observations of zero-n bandgaps in photonic crystal superlattices consisting of alternating stacks of negative index photonic crystals and positive index dielectric materials in the near-infrared. Guided by ab initio three-dimensional numerical simulations, the fabricated nanostructured superlattices demonstrate the presence of zero-order gaps in remarkable agreement with theoretical predictions across a range of different superlattice periods and unit cell variations. These volume-averaged zero-index superlattice structures present a new type of photonic band gap, with potential for complete wavefront control for arbitrary phase delay lines and open cavity resonances.

Abstract:By drawing an analogy with the conventional photonic crystals, the plasmonic bandgaps have mainly employed the periodic metallic structures, named as plasmonic crystals. However, the sizes of the plasmonic crystals are much larger than the wavelengths, and the large sizes considerably decrease the density of the photonic integration circuits. Here, based on the coupled-resonator effect, the plasmonic bandgaps are experimentally realized in the subwavelength waveguide-resonator structure, which considerably decreases the structure size to subwavelength scales. An analytic model and the phase analysis are established to explain this phenomenon. Both the experiment and simulation show that the plasmonic bandgap structure has large fabrication tolerances (>20%). Instead of the periodic metallic structures in the bulky plasmonic crystals, the utilization of the subwavelength plasmonic waveguide-resonator structure not only significantly shrinks the bandgap structure to be about λ2/13, but also expands the physics of the plasmonic bandgaps. The subwavelength dimension, together with the waveguide configuration and robust realization, makes the bandgap structure easy to be highly integrated on chips.

Abstract:A comprehensive analysis of the coupling coefficients between plane waves in conventional dielectric media and Bloch waves of photonic crystals with effective negative refractions is performed by the layer Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. Employing the infinite layers refraction operator, semi-infinite size photonic crystals are considered. Some special coupling properties are discussed. In particular, the strong angular dependence of coupling coefficients is found even for an interface between air (n=1) and a photonic crystal with effective refractive index (n(eff)=-1). Thus, a negative refractive index defined by the radius of a circular equal-frequency contour does not guarantee an isotropic behavior.
The Resonance-Induced In-Gap Modes in Photonic Crystals Composed of Metal-Coated Dielectric Spheres

Abstract:Using the vector wave multiple-scattering method we show that a sizable photonic band gap and resonance-induced in-gap modes can be realized simultaneously in crystals composed of metal-coated dielectric spheres. The position and width of the in-gap modes can be controlled by making appropriate choices of the dielectric constant of the inner dielectric sphere and thickness of the metal-coating layer, respectively. Such properties can be very useful in making optical band filters as well as microcavity lasers if they are sustained in the presence of dissipation. The calculated transmission spectra suggest that the resonance-induced in-gap modes decrease in intensity with dissipation and exist only for good metals.

Abstract:Motivated by the realization of the Dirac point (DP) with a double-cone structure for optical field in the negative-zero-positive index metamaterial (NZPIM), the reflection, transmission, and Goos-Haumlnchen (GH) shifts inside the NZPIM slab are investigated. Due to the linear Dirac dispersion, the transmission as the function of the frequency has a gap, thus, the corresponding reflection has a frequency or wavelength window for the perfect reflection, which is similar to the Bragg reflection in the one-dimensional photonic crystals. Near the DP, the associated GH shifts in the transmission and reflection can be changed from positive to negative with increasing the wavelength. These negative and positive shifts can also be enhanced by transmission resonances when the frequency is far from that at the DP. All these phenomena will lead to some potential applications in the integrated optics and optical devices.

Abstract:A multichannel filter is demonstrated theoretically based on a one-dimensional photonic crystal heterostructure containing single-negative materials. The filtering properties of the photonic crystal filter, including the channel number and frequency, can be tailored by adjusting the structure period or the layer thickness. The angular response of the filter and the influences of the loss of the single-negative materials on the filtering properties are analyzed.

Abstract:By employing 2D plane wave expansion (PWE) and finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods, a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) based on the compound square lattice structure is presented. Band-gap can be observed for TM polarization and compared with the simple lattice structure based on the same material, the band-gap is increased by 62.7%. By optimizing the parameters we get the PCW with the propagation only near the wavelength of 1.55 µm and a flat group index curve in a wide wavelength range of 40 nm. And the group velocity dispersion compensation can be realized by the structure optimization. The results provide a reference for the study and application of photonic crystal waveguide based on the compound lattice structure.
