Study on Defense System of Traditional City with Spatial Dimension:Case Study of Dong-jing City in Song Dynasty

Abstract:Defense system of ancient Chinese cities played an ultimate important role in city development.There was rich intelligent thinking in the planning and construction of defense system in ancient cities which is the most precious part of the Chinese city heritage.After a brief review of the related research literatures,we argue that the spatial performance of defense activity is the element of core essence to determine the construction of defense system of an ancient city.In the empirical research,we put forward an estimated model based on the extensive study of classical location theories,which is then applied in the case study for Dong-Jing city of North-Song dynasty.We find that the spatial performance of the city defense system is the key mechanism element determining the effect of the defense activity,and consequently becomes the inherent law of the construction of cities defense system.
