Abstract:In this paper, we establish the global existence of a steady symmetric conic shock wave when a supersonic incoming flow hits a symmetric cone for a steady potential flow. The speed of the incoming flow is close to the limit speed, and the generatrix of the cone is assumed to have an attack angle less than a critical value and to have a decay rate on its second order derivatives. Based on a background solution, which is introduced here for the first time, we apply the characteristic method to construct the global solution.

Abstract:The inviscid supersonic flow passing a conical body is studied. The potential equation is applied to describe the motion of the flow. The problem is then reduced to a boundary value problem of an elliptic equation with free boundary. If the surface of the body is a perturbed circular cone with its vertex angle less than a critical value, then the existence of the solution for such a boundary value problem with an attached conical shock is proved.

Abstract:We establish the global existence and stability of a steady symmetric conic shock wave for the perturbed supersonic isothermal flow past an infinitely long circular cone with an arbitrary vertex angle. The flow is assumed to be described by a steady potential equation. By establishing the uniform weighted energy estimate on the linearized problem, we show that the symmetric conic shock attached at the vertex of the cone exists globally in the whole space when the speed of the supersonic incoming flow is appropriately large.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and stability of a steady transonic conic shock wave for the symmetrically perturbed supersonic flow past an infinitely long conic body. The flow is assumed to be polytropic, isentropic and described by a steady potential equation. Theoretically, as indicated in [R. Courant, K.O. Friedrichs, Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves, Interscience Publishers, Inc., New York, 1948], it follows from the Rankine–Hugoniot conditions and the entropy condition that there will appear a weak shock or a strong shock attached at the vertex of the sharp cone in terms of the different pressure states at infinity behind the shock surface, which correspond to the supersonic shock and the transonic shock respectively. Under suitable assumptions on given shock and given incoming flow, we construct the degenerate background solution for [math] and establish its properties. Then, we apply scaling transformation and perturbation analysis to construct the global classical solution to the inverse problem for hypersonic incoming flow.

Abstract:We establish the global existence and stability of a three-dimensional supersonic conic shock wave for a compactly perturbed steady supersonic flow past an infinitely long circular cone with a sharp angle. The flow is described by a 3-D steady potential equation, which is multi-dimensional, quasilinear, and hyperbolic with respect to the supersonic direction. Making use of the geometric properties of the pointed shock surface together with the Rankine–Hugoniot conditions on the conic shock surface and the boundary condition on the surface of the cone, we obtain a global uniform weighted energy estimate for the nonlinear problem by finding an appropriate multiplier and establishing a new Hardy-type inequality on the shock surface. Based on this, we prove that a multi-dimensional conic shock attached to the vertex of the cone exists globally when the Mach number of the incoming supersonic flow is sufficiently large. Moreover, the asymptotic behavior of the 3-D supersonic conic shock solution, which is shown to approach the corresponding background shock solution in the downstream domain for the uniform supersonic constant flow past the sharp cone, is also explicitly given.

Abstract:The supersonic flow past a convex combined wedge is discussed. Here the surface of the wedge is composed of two straight lines connected by a convex smooth curve. Under the assumptions that the shock is weak, the vertex of the wedge is less than a critical value and the difference of the slope of these two lines is small, the author proves the global existence of solution with shock front and obtains the asymptotic behaviour of the solution.

Abstract:: In this paper we study the mathematical aspects of the stationary supersonic flow past a non-axisymmetric curved pointed body. The flow is described by a steady potential flow equation, which is a quasilinear hyperbolic equation of second order. We prove the local existence of the solution to this problem with a pointed shock attached at the tip of the pointed body, provided the pointed body is a perturbation of a circular cone, and the vertex angle of the approximate cone of the pointed body is less than a critical value. The solution is smooth in between the shock and the surface of the body. Consequently, such a structure of flow near the tip of the pointed body and its stability is verified mathematically.
Computation of Hypersonic Transitional Flows Over Cones Using Gas-Kinetic Scheme Coupled with the Turbulence Model

Abstract:Accurate prediction of the laminar-turbulent transition with the aerodynamic force and heat in hypersonic boundary flows is essential for the design of a hypersonic vehicle. However, subject to the complex boundary layer mechanism of the angle of attack (AOA) effects, the numerical prediction with high accuracy of hypersonic transitional flows over a cone at a small AOA is still a challenging job in current computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling. In this paper, our objective is to improve the prediction accuracy of the traditional turbulent model in the boundary layer flow problems. We employ a gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) strongly coupled with the turbulent kinetic energy equation in the shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. Langtry-Menter's two-equation transition model is also implemented under the GKS framework. The turbulent relaxation time obtained from the turbulence model is also implemented into the kinetic equation of the BGK model as an enhanced particle collision time related to turbulent fluctuation. We further validate this method for several classic cases of the hypersonic transitional flows over cones with various free-stream conditions at zero AOA. We also compare the numerical solutions by the current GKS coupled with the turbulent kinetic energy equation and traditional Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) method. The numerical results confirm the consistency of the transition onset locations predicted by the proposed method with the experiments. The new coupled method also significantly improves numerical accuracy. The heat flux is also in good agreement with the experimental data. The hypersonic flows past a sharp cone are also computed at various small angles of attack ranging from 2° to 4°, where the numerical results agree with the existing experimental data. Using our results we also analyze the impact of AOA on a sharp cone.

Abstract:AbstractIn this paper, we are concerned with the instability problem of one global transonic conic shock wave for the supersonic Euler flow past an infinitely long conic body whose vertex angle is less than some critical value. This is motivated by the following descriptions in the bookSupersonic Flow and Shock Wavesby Courant and Friedrichs: if there is a supersonic steady flow which comes from minus infinity, and the flow hits a sharp cone along its axis direction, then it follows from the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions, the physical entropy condition, and the apple curve method that there will appear a weak shock or a strong shock attached at the vertex of the cone, which corresponds to the supersonic shock or the transonic shock, respectively. A long-standing open problem is that only the weak shock could occur, and the strong shock is unstable. However, a convincing proof of this instability has apparently never been given. The aim of this paper is to understand this. In particular, under some suitable assumptions, because of the essential influence of the rotation of Euler flow, we show that a global transonic conic shock solution is unstable as long as the related sharp circular cone is perturbed.

Abstract:The supersonic flow past a concave double wedge is discussed. Because of the interaction between the outer shock attached at the head of the wedge and the inner shock issued from the concave corner, there is a rarefaction wave issued from the intersection of the outer and inner shock. The rarefaction wave is reflected by the outer shock and the wedge infinitely, while the outer shock is also bent due to interaction. The global existence of the solution is proved under the assumptions that the outer shock is weak and the difference of two slopes of the double wedge is small. Meanwhile, a rigorous proof of the asymptotic behavior of the global solution is given. The property is often applied to numerical computation.

Abstract:This paper studies an inverse problem of reconstructing the shape of the circular symmetric cone for the given leading shock front.Assuming that the attack angle is small and that the incoming flow has a large Mach Number, we show that the shape of the cone can be reconstructed near the vertex from the data of the given shock and establish an asymptotic expansion for the velocity and the slope of cone.

However, in contrast to the case of the potential equation, due to the essential influence of the rotations for the Euler flow, in this paper we will show that the global weak solution of the Euler system with one stable supersonic conic shock wave does not exist when a uniform supersonic incoming flow hits an infinitely long and curved sharp conic body.

Abstract:We are concerned with the structural stability of conical shocks in the three-dimensional steady supersonic flows past Lipschitz perturbed cones whose vertex angles are less than the critical angle. The flows under consideration are governed by the steady isothermal Euler equations for potential flow with axisymmetry so that the equations contain a singular geometric source term. We first formulate the shock stability problem as an initial boundary value problem with the leading conical shock-front as a free boundary, and then establish the existence and structural/asymptotic stability of global entropy solutions of bounded variation (BV) of the problem. To achieve this, we first develop a modified Glimm scheme to construct approximate solutions via self-similar solutions as building blocks in order to incorporate with the geometric source term. Then we introduce the Glimm-type functional, based on the local interaction estimates between weak waves, the strong leading conical shock, and self-similar solutions, as well as the estimates of the center changes of the self-similar solutions. To make sure of the decrease of the Glimm-type functional, we choose appropriate weights by careful asymptotic analysis of the reflection coefficients in the interaction estimates, when the Mach number of the incoming flow is sufficiently large. Finally, we establish the existence of global entropy solutions involving a strong leading conical shock-front, besides weak waves, under the conditions that the Mach number of the incoming flow is sufficiently large and the weighted total variation of the slopes of the generating curve of the Lipschitz perturbed cone is sufficiently small. Furthermore, the entropy solution is shown to approach asymptotically the self-similar solution that is determined by the incoming flow and the asymptotic tangent of the cone boundary at infinity.
Hypersonic limit for steady compressible Euler flows passing straight cones

Abstract:We investigate the hypersonic limit for steady, uniform, and compressible polytropic gas passing a symmetric straight cone. By considering Radon measure solutions, we show that as the Mach number of the upstream flow tends to infinity, the measures associated with the weak entropy solution containing an attached shock ahead of the cone converge vaguely to the measures associated with a Radon measure solution to the conical hypersonic-limit flow. This justifies the Newtonian sine-squared pressure law for cones in hypersonic aerodynamics. For Chaplygin gas, assuming that the Mach number of the incoming flow is less than a finite critical value, we demonstrate that the vertex angle of the leading shock is independent of the conical body's vertex angle and is totally determined by the incoming flow's Mach number. If the Mach number exceeds the critical value, we explicitly construct a Radon measure solution with a concentration boundary layer.
