Abstract:This paper discusses a project to reconstruct in media the lost landscape and culture of Xi-Hu (West Lake), China. This work is intended to educate and entertain the user as well as stimulate his or her own creativity. Abstract:Soundscape is a new interdisciplinary field of landscape and acoustics. This paper is intended to study the relationship between soundscape and culture. That is, the Chinese culture's pursuit of acoustic beauty from three aspects as poetries, writings and drawings. It is demonstrated by the case study of soundscape in West Lake scenic area, with particular emphasis on humane attribute. The study has approached by three steps as classification - case study - promotion to region. The major attractions of West Lake scenic area is divided into natural and artificial categories, and the typical cases selected are Orioles Singing in the Willows and Evening Bell Ringing at Nanping hill. The two cases are analyzed from two aspects as the cultural background and humanities artistic conception, in order to prove the subject. And the importance of soundscape culture research to the construction of West Lake scenic area is declared further.

Abstract:This paper investigates ways of deploying ecological principles in the planning and design practice of landscape architecture. As a modern profession, one of the central tasks of landscape architecture is of protecting and recovering our environment. The profession is now in the demand in China, because of China’s rapid urban development and the consequent environmental problems. A case study of the planning and design of the Li Lake area provides evidence of how the profession is carrying out such a task. The study also identifies the disconnection between ecological and cultural strategies for recovering a particular landscape.

Abstract:Despite little research of them, the landscapes of Slender West Lake underpin a significant and unique typology among the various Chinese traditional urban waterfronts. Although the name ‘Gardens of Yangzhou’ appears in 11th century, these gardens were referred and used as urban public landscape from the 18th century because of Grand Canal. The article explores the organic evolution of Chinese traditional urban waterfronts, through an investigation of historical events occurring along with the landscapes of Slender West Lake. As a Chinese traditional urban waterfront, its organic evolution was often based on the transformation of the experience of landscape. When the trip was more based on the river because of boats, the edge of the garden has become the focus point.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine nuances in ways of seeing and understanding the World Heritage listed West Lake Cultural Landscape, Hangzhou China, through different eyes. The paper briefly introduces the current debate on claimed differences and convergences between Western and Eastern mind sets in heritage conservation and then moves into reviewing the human side of landscape. We then examine the perspectives of international heritage agencies such as UNESCO and ICOMOS and those of Chinese counterparts involved in the nomination and assessment process of West Lake for World Heritage Listing in 2011, and then review the perceptions of Chinese tourists. Underlying the inquiry are two fundamental questions. First, to what extent do international agencies understand the meaning of cultural landscape in a Chinese context? Second, what do Chinese tourists feel about a nationally renowned Chinese example of a cultural landscape in the international spotlight?

Abstract:Urban landscape usually contains two layers of meaning: landscape and viewing, especially in waterfront zone. Traditional design focuses on landscape design which purely improve the quality of objects in static, passive way much more than noticing the initiative viewer as subject. Actually, landscape and viewing are dialectic. Interactive design using reasonable visual evaluation methods, integrated with "positive" human activity optimization as well as "passive" landscape improvement, can be helpful to enhance the quality and controllability. West Lake in Hangzhou is the famous cultural heritage in China with humanities and nature fitting each other perfectly, which also represents the model of blending natural scenery and modem city. However, it faces some urgent problems in modern urban development, the relationship between West Lake and the city has become extremely uncoordinated, as it suffered very serious "pressure" from the city.This paper takes West Lake as example, basing on lots of survey, analyzes the visual effect from every grid viewpoint on the lake (using GPS to locate), and tries to find out the both way of adjustment from the respects of viewer and landscape, and finally proposes some thinking of the design method.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid development of digital technologies provides important opportunities for more effective cultural heritage conservation and management. While the concept of cultural landscape has been accepted by the academic community in the cultural heritage field for many years, the digital conservation of cultural landscapes still lacks pragmatic guidance. The aim of this article is to explore an approach for building a digital information system to support cultural landscape conservation and management. The Slender West Lake scenic area, a typical cultural landscape in China, was used as an instrumental case study. A geo-database was designed and established to integrate the information of the natural, cultural, tangible and intangible landscape features of Slender West Lake. The digital information system for cultural landscapes provides a more holistic, dynamic and specific cultural perspective on heritage for landscape conservators. The system provides comprehensive information support for heritage conservation, management and interpretation, which are not achievable with conventional tools. This article has expanded the cultural heritage theory by presenting a practical guide for the digital information management of cultural landscapes. The workflow for building a cultural landscape geo-database can be used as a reference for heritage projects in China and other countries.

Abstract:There are many cities formed and flourished by water.The design of the waterfront landscape affects people's quality of life and the environment directly.The waterfront area is of high economic,cultural and ecological values in a city.In the past,the urban waterfront landscape design focused on the static landscape space,while ignoring the dynamic consideration to urban landscape space,in particular,ignoring the visual space experience by people's random walk.Especially for people walking and resting by the lake or boating in the lake,it is difficult to capture their view points due to its dynamic randomness,making it difficult to start the design based on their dynamic activities.This paper takes the West Lake as an example and summarizes relevant international planning theory and practice about city view system regarding the core issues of West Lake.Then the paper proposes the theory and technology of dynamic design of a waterfront city with the interaction among "people-city-lake".It also analyzes the skyline contours,dynamic tour routes,visual experience,landscape corridors,spatial forms and other crucial issues of West Lake.This paper explores a new theory and method for Chinese urban waterfront landscape design to a certain extent.

Abstract:As the scarce mountain scenery in Shanghai suburbs,Chenshan Hill's human history can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty.Since the twentieth century,the quarrying operations have made it a waste land.Now,with the new botanical garden construction,this landscape has the opportunity to be reshaped and ecologically restored.It is the environmental ethic and design philosophy that to identify the site's complicated information layer system,to judge the value of the abandoned land,to respect the objective historical consequence and to continue its development course.With technology development,the design wisely adopted the minimum intervention strategy to transform and reconstruct the site information layer system,so that to achieve multiple transformation goals,to update people's cognition on the fourth nature,and to establish a new harmonious relationship between human and nature.

Abstract:The "Eight Scenic Views Paintings" represent crucial visual materials for investigating the history of cultural landscapes. However, traditional methods of interpreting materials struggle to discern the inherent connections between different landscape elements. This study proposes an approach for deconstructing historical images, taking the example of the Forty Scenic Views in the Late Ming Dynasty in Nanjing, China. To explore the co-occurrence structure, hierarchical clustering, and correlation features among various elements, various digital humanities quantification methods were applied, including spatial analysis of ArcGIS, co-occurrence and clustering of KH Coder, and correlation analysis of SPSS. This study reveals the characteristics of the landscape construction of Nanjing in the Late Ming: natural landscape as the foundation, artificial landscape as the core, and advocating tradition as the fashion. It also uncovers the landscape order: mountains, waters, and scenic views interweaved and coexisted, as well as nature and culture intertwined and clustered. In addition, multiple information graphs of the subordinate and co-occurrence relationships of 20 landscape elements were constructed, 5 landscape paradigms were extracted, and 36 pairs of related relationships were discovered, deepening the historical understanding of the urban landscape construction of Nanjing in the Late Ming. This paper puts forward the idea of analyzing historical images by digital method, which provides some essential and detailed historical basis for explaining the value of cultural landscape heritage and shaping contemporary urban landscape.

Abstract:For thousands of years, Lanzhou city has long history and bright culture, and has numerous historic buildings and cultural relics. But with the rapid development of the city, many cultural heritages had been destroyed. The cities appearance are becoming more and more similar, urban culture roots has not clear, the city began to become unfamiliar. The reason is the local residents have a lack of cultural identity to living environment. City square, as a major public urban space. By a sense of spiritual civilization, it should be a window of the city and essential building space to daily life of local residents; it also bears an important responsibility which is heritage city in cultural context. Based on the Yellow River in Lanzhou City, and the study of the new square design concept, analyzed and summarized, presented the concept of square design to create a historical and cultural context of urban culture, the importance of heritage and modern artistic expression should be united with urban history and culture diversity, to make people re-establish the cultural identity for the city to gain ownership in their spirit.

Abstract:The West Lake is one of the most famous scenic sites in China and an important component of World Cultural Heritages.As a paradigm of a close connection between landscape and city,the landscape planning of the West Lake and the city has lots of sensitivities and unknown attributes.In the course that the West Lake scenic area applies for becoming a World Cultural Heritage,the planning put forward a two-way planning concept based on the "landscape-view" interaction,introduced the innovations of various technical methods,and established the landscape planning framework based on the rational analysis,which optimized the special elements such as tour routes around the West Lake,urban spatial form,and visual corridors.Combined with the factors such as urban development tendency,the research achievement can further complete and extend the relevant planning theories and technologies to apply to different case cities.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to probe into the cultural consciousness and identity of the Chinese people through one of China’s most emblematic humanistic landscapes, Hangzhou’s West Lake. Additionally, it aims to broaden the scope of Chinese classical literature education by introducing cultural content-based educational approaches centered around the poetry of West Lake. The main text initially presents a variety of literary works associated with West Lake, serving as valuable textual resources. These include poetry depicting the Ten Scenes of West Lake, compositions by renowned poets, and literary creations by female writers. Furthermore, the paper proposes two educational approaches for teaching regional culture and literary texts related to West Lake: employing storytelling as an educational method and incorporating cultural content creation into the curriculum.
Cultural Landscape Pattern During the Early Historic Period in the West Liaohe River Basin

Abstract:The West Liaohe River Basin is a typical ecotone and eco-vulnerable zone in northern China. Shaped by the long-term human's overuse, regional eco-environment in West Liaohe River Basin was seriously destroyed, which has threatened the harmonious and sustainable development of future human and nature relationships. Archeological studies show multifold cultures had evolved in this typical area since Holocene and civilization has been lasted through to present. By using GIS software, the authors first build DEM model of the study area and cultural landscape layers of different phases during the early historic period.They then overlay them to create DEM model of cultural landscapes of the early historic period, which distinctly revealed the relationships between distribution of cultural landscapes and natural landscape. All the analyses are based on four different spatial scales, which are typical archaeological site, Jiaolaihe River Valley, Aohan Banner and Chifeng area. Based on these studies, this paper identifies the basic evolving modes of the vertical change and horizontal change of the cultural landscapes during the earlier historic period of Holocene in West Liaohe River Basin. At the smaller scales of the three typical archaeological sites and Jiaolaihe River Basin, cultural landscapes mainly showed vertical change, including vertical expansion and downwards migration. Vertical changes of cultural landscapes had close relationships with cultural development, changes of production modes and life styles, and evolution of geomorphic landscapes. Evolution of the geomorphic landscapes, especially the river terraces, was an important driving factor. Configuration of small or middle scales of landform units and water sources, development of river systems, and combination of landform units directly influenced the formation of cultural landscapes at these scales. At the larger scales of Aohan Banner and Chifeng area, cultural landscapes mainly showed horizontal change. From Xiaohexi Culture to Hongshan Culture, cultures of this region were in expansion period, mainly featuring the spatial expansion of cultural scales. During Xiaoheyan Culture period, culture was in a period of contraction. After Xiaoheyan Culture period, culture of this region entered into a new expansion period again. Heterogeneity of regional natural landscape shows great influence on the formation of cultural landscape patterns during the earlier historic period.

Abstract:Abstract The rural cultural landscape along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal encompasses such tangible objects as water conservancy legacy projects, rural settlements, rural ecology and productive and natural landscape as well as such intangible contents as rural culture, conventions, handcrafts, biography and legends, forming unique linear legacies that boast high research values. The present paper made a field investigation into the typical villages along the South Canal and analyzed the current problems to explore the local cultural landscape resources and environmental conditions. It proposes to probe into the thinking philosophy to upgrade and design the “scenes” in the rural cultural landscape along the Grand Canal from the perspective of all media communication in hopes of broadening the idea of rural cultural landscape protection along the canal and offering references for the protection and inheritance of the characteristic rural culture thereof.

Abstract:Landscape design ignores human being self-awareness showing, which make humans constantly in a dominant position at presence. From the standpoint of creative subject which has aesthetic experience and behavior, this paper draws on the theoretical approaches of narratology in other areas. By the interpretation for the outstanding works on contemporary landscape, it re-examines the significance of the contemporary landscape. From the view of users , it explores the landscape spatial order of harmonious coexistence between man and nature and the landscape implication expression of spatial cues for narrative plot. At the same time, research on landscape narrative having more humanistic and regional shapes and perfects the spirit of place, and improves artistic appeal of landscape design works.
