Abstract:The ultrasonic sound velocity and attenuation in single-phase polycrystalline La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 have been measured by a conventional pulse-echo-overlap technique at a frequency of 10 MHz under zero magnetic field and an external magnetic field, between 77 and 270 K. Dramatic stiffening in sound velocities coincided with big attenuation peaks for both longitudinal and transverse waves were observed near the charge-ordering transition. This simultaneous occurrence of electron ordering and lattice stiffening implies extremely strong electron-phonon coupling originating in the Jahn-Teller effect. Under an external magnetic field, the stiffening of the sound velocity shifts to a lower temperature and the height of the attenuation peak decreases with increasing external magnetic field. It is suggested that these field dependences of the sound velocity and attenuation an due to the switching of the magnetic correlation from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near the charge-ordering transition.
