Abstract:A nanofabrication method for the production of flexible core-shell structured silk elastin nanofibers is presented, based on an all-aqueous coaxial electrospinning process. In this process, silk fibroin (SF) and silk-elastin-like protein polymer (SELP), both in aqueous solution, with high and low viscosity, respectively, were used as the inner (core) and outer (shell) layers of the nanofibers. The electrospinnable SF core solution served as a spinning aid for the nonelectrospinnable SELP shell solution. Uniform nanofibers with average diameter from 301 ± 108 nm to 408 ± 150 nm were obtained through adjusting the processing parameters. The core-shell structures of the nanofibers were confirmed by fluorescence and electron microscopy. In order to modulate the mechanical properties and provide stability in water, the as-spun SF-SELP nanofiber mats were treated with methanol vapor to induce β-sheet physical crosslinks. FTIR confirmed the conversion of the secondary structure from a random coil to β-sheets after the methanol treatment. Tensile tests of SF-SELP core-shell structured nanofibers showed good flexibility with elongation at break of 5.20% ± 0.57%, compared with SF nanofibers with an elongation at break of 1.38% ± 0.22%. The SF-SELP core-shell structured nanofibers should provide useful options to explore in the field of biomaterials due to the improved flexibility of the fibrous mats and the presence of a dynamic SELP layer on the outer surface.

Abstract:In this paper, Fe3O4 nanofibers with average diameters of 100nm were successfully synthesized by electrospinning of PVP/Fe(NO3)·9H2O composite solution followed by calcinations and reduction. The resulting Fe3O4 nanofibers were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), transmission Mössbauer spectra (MS), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). These nanofibers showed a cubic structure and uniform and continuous morphology. The Fe3O4 nanofibers possessed a saturation magnetization Ms of 57.6emu/g. A large coercivity Hc of 188.4Oe together with a high remanence ratio Mr/Ms=0.28 is observed, which result from the shape anisotropy.

Abstract:A method for preparing crystalline magnetic yttrium iron garnet nanofibers was presented.In this procedure,metallic organic compounds containing iron and yttrium ions were dissolved in organic solvents,which were subsequently electrospun to form composite fibers and were calcinated into crystalline yttrium iron garnet nanofibers at 750 ℃.The measurements were performed by Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM),Tunnel Electron Microscope(TEM) and X-ray Diffraction(XRD). The results show that the addition rate of solutions and the environmental humidity are major factors influencing the fiber characterizations.The diameters of the composite fibers are between 500 nm～1 000 nm,whereas after post-annealing,they decreased to about 100 nm,and the yttrium iron garnet single crystalline phase is obtained.

Abstract:L1 0 -structured platinum–iron (FePt) nanofibers were successfully synthesized by electrospinning technique, followed by calcination and reduction processes. In the preparation procedure, ferrous chloride tetrahydrate [Fe(Cl) 2 ⋅4H 2 O] and iron nitrate nonahydrate [Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ⋅9H 2 O] were, respectively, used as iron sources contained in precursor solution for electrospinning. Subsequently, the FePt nanofibers were obtained from the calcination in air and the followed reduction in hydrogen (H 2 ) of the as-spun FePt/PVP composite nanofibers. The FePt nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. It was found that the different iron salt used in the spinning solutions could highly affect the FePt nanofiber morphology, crystallite size, and the magnetic properties. The FePt nanofibers, resulted from the spinning solution containing iron dichloride tetrahydrate, were of better crystallinity and well-defined fibrous morphology with an average diameter of about 110 nm. Additionally, the considerably large coercivity of 10.27 kOe was recorded from the above FePt nanofibers.

Abstract:We have successfully prepared nanostructured LiCoO2 and LiMn2O4 fibers using a novel high frequency electrospinning method. These fibers were composed of very small crystalline grains uniformly linked with an average size less than 100 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used to characterize their structures and electrochemical properties, respectively. These results suggested that a high frequency electrospinning was expected to be an effective method for the fabrication of inorganic composite fibers.

Abstract:Thin Mn2(NO3)2/PVA precursor nanowire was fabricated via electrospinning technology at a low temperature in this paper. After dried at 150°C for 10 hours and then sintered at 450°C for 2 hours, Mn2O3 nanowire was successfully obtained. The nanowire was characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the nanowire was composed of pure Mn 2O3 phase. The nanowire exhibited smooth surface and continuous sharp with length of tens of micrometer. The diameter of Mn 2O3 nanowire was measured and calculated through SEM, which showed most probable value of about 110 nm and 270 nm. The reason of the diameter separation was also discussed.

Abstract:Electrospun zein membranes were prepared using DMF as solvent. By changing the solution concentration, the electrospinning voltage and the distance between the spinneret and collector, nanofibrous meshes without bead defects could be obtained. In order to improve the mechanical strength of the hydrated zein meshes, core-shell-structured nanofibrous membranes with PCL as the core material and zein forming the shell were prepared by coaxial electrospinning. The core-shell structure of the composite fibers was confirmed by SEM characterization of the fibers, either extracted with chloroform to remove the inner PCL, or elongated to expose their cross-section. The composition and average diameter of the composite fibers could be modulated by the feed rate of the inner PCL solution. It was found that the core-shell fibrous membranes have similar wettability to the electrospun zein mesh. The presence of PCL in the fibers could significantly improve the mechanical properties of the zein membrane.

Abstract:Nanofibrous membranes of rigid polysaccharides including chitosan,alginate or hyaluronic acid(HA) were obtained by coaxial electrospinning of their corresponding aqueous solutions(the inner dope) and PEO(M_n=6.0×10~5) solution in a DMF/H_2O admixture(the outer dope) and subsequent removal of the outer PEO shell.The fiber structure was characterized by TEM and SEM.It is found that core-shell fibers with PEO forming the shell and polysaccharide as the core material can be conveniently prepared by coaxial electrospinning.The PEO shell can be removed by extraction of the core-shell fibers with chloroform.Compared with the polysaccharide fibers prepared by regular uni-axial electrospinning, the fibers(obtained) by coaxial electrospinning display integrated structure after PEO treatment.

Abstract:We developed a simple approach to design and fabricate precisely controlled coiled nanofibers via the micromanufacture of electrospun nanofibers. The fabrication set-up was specially designed so that one stream of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) sol with ferric nitrate was electrospun into a fiber bundle. This bundle acted as an axis that was collected between two opposite rotating needles while another stream of PVP sol, containing copper nitrate, was electrospun around the fiber bundle axis to form a coil. By altering the elements in the precursor solution, copper microsolenoids with magnetite (Fe3O4) cores were fabricated followed by annealing and deoxidation. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:A new type of gelatin nanofiber has been fabricated by electrospinning using water as the solvent. By using a 33% aqueous solution of gelatin at 40 ℃, gelatin nanofiber mats having a uniform porous structure with fiber diameters in the range 120-210 nm were formed. After crosslinking with an aqueous ethanol solution of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide sodium salt (EDC/NHS), the morphology of the fibers in the gelatin nanofiber mats was retained. Crosslinking, led to a decrease in enthalpy but enhanced thermal resistance properties and mechanical strength. Proliferation experiments with periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) indicated that the cells effectively adhered to, and proliferated on, the nanofiber mats, indicating that the material has considerable potential for use in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) in stomatology.

Abstract:Zirconia nanofibers were fabricated by the sol-gel combined with an electrospinning process. The spinnable sol was prepared with zirconium carbonate and acetic acid as raw materials, yttrium nitrate as phase stabilizer, and polyvinyl pyrrolidone as spinning aid. Formation mechanism of spinnable sol was studied. The possible structure of Poly zirconium acetate (PZA) and idealized formation process of PZA were researched in this mechanism. Electrospinning process and heat-treatment process were also researched. Being heat-treated to 1200 degrees C, the fibers with diameters of 400-600 nm are composed of 20-40 nm tetragonal zirconia grains, which is crack free with smooth surface. Abstract:A new method for fabricating fluorescent nanofibers as sensing materials was developed via the electrospinning technique using fluorophore-doped polymers. Fluorescent nanofibers with diameters in the range 200-600 nm were produced with fluorophores dispersed uniformly in the matrix. Sensing nanofibers with secondary porous structures were further achieved by introducing a porogen or deacetylation treament as a new approach, exhibiting unique morphologies with intra-fiber pores and obviously improved quenching sensitivity. Methyl violet was used as a model to investigate the sensing performance of a nanofiber membrane composed of cellulose acetate doped with 9-chloromethylanthracene. This work provides a simple and applicable strategy for the fabrication of sensing materials for optical sensor devices.

Abstract:Size-controlled single-crystal-like lead zirconate titanate (PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3, PZT) ceramic fibers have been successfully prepared by sol-gel based electrospinning and subsequent calcination process, and their morphology, crystal structure have been characterized at nanoscale. The fiber diameter can be precisely controlled from similar to 50 to 540 nm by varying the PVP concentration and electrospinning process parameters. The crystal structure of the nanofibers pyrolyzed at 400 degrees C for 0.5 h and calcined at 650 degrees C for 2 h is proved to be single-crystal-like tetragonal perovskite phase. A formation mechanism is also discussed based on the thermal decomposition process, effect of the calcination and pyrolysis procedure, using the thermogravimetry/differential scanning caborimetry (TG/DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is found that the pyrolysis procedure is a critical factor for the fabrication of single-crystal-like structure PZT nanofibers using electrospinning. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Continuous mullite (3Al(2)O(3)-2SiO(2)) nanofibers were fabricated by a sol-gel electrospinning technique. The detailed crystallization development and micromorphological evolution of both the as-electrospun nanofibers and the sintered mullite nanofibers; were investigated. Results indicated that the spinnability and micromorphological evolution of mullite nanofibers are largely dependent on the viscosity eta of the mullite sol, which can be adjusted by polyvinylprrolidone (PVP) content. Mullite nanofibers with common cylindrical morphology and diameters ranging from 400 nm to 800 nm could be obtained easily and rapidly when PVP content is ranged from 5 wt.% to 8 wt.%. High purity polycrystalline mullite nanofibers with diameters of about 200 nm were obtained after sintering at 1200 degrees C for 2 h. Abstract:Coaxial core/shell electrospun nanofibers consisting of ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) and relaxor ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) are tailor-made with hierarchical structures to modulate their mechanical properties with respect to their constituents. Compared with two single and the other coaxial membranes prepared in the research, the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE membrane shows a more prominent mechanical anisotropy between revolving direction (RD) and cross direction (CD) associated with improved resistance to tensile stress for the crystallite phase stability and good strength-ductility balance. This is due to the better degree of core/shell-TrFE-CTFE nanofiber alignment and the crystalline/amorphous ratio. The coupling between terpolymer P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) and copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) is responsible for phase stabilization, comparing the core/shell-TrFE/CTFE with the pristine terpolymer. Moreover, an impressive collective deformation mechanism of a two-length scale in the core/shell composite structure is found. We apply in-situ synchrotron X-ray to resolve the two-length scale simultaneously by using the small-angle X-ray scattering to characterize the nanofibers and the wide-angle X-ray diffraction to identify the phase transformations. Our findings may serve as guidelines for the fabrication of the electrospun nanofibers used as membranes-based electroactive polymers.

Abstract:Abstract Ferroferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) magnetic nanoparticles are easily agglomerated due to their large specific surface area, and cannot be uniformly dispersed in polymer fiber matrix fabricated from electrospinning solution. In order to obtain uniform dispersion of Fe 3 O 4 in composite nanofibers, a new method is used by mixing organic precursor of ferroferric oxide iron acetylacetonate (Fe (acac) 3 ) and organic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), then subjected nanofibers through electrospinning and formed ferric oxide/polyvinylpyrrolidone (Fe 3 O 4 /PVP) fibers via in-situ calcination at low temperature. The morphology of the fibers and the dispersion of Fe 3 O 4 particles in the fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The crystallization of the magnetic fibers was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) was used. The magnetic measurement of the fiber shows that the magnetic nanofibers have better superparamagnetism, which are expected to be used as a drug-loaded magnetic cloth in the field of biomedicine.
