Abstract:Objective:To investigate efficacy and safety of percutaneous kyphoplasty(PKP) in treatment of multiple myeloma(MM) with vertebral compression fractures(VCFs).Method:Ten patients with multiple myeloma who had percutaneous kyphoplasty for vertebral compression fractures were retrospectively.Pain and functional status were assessed by visual analog scale(VAS) and Oswesty disability index(ODI).For a subjective assessment, every patient was asked about his/her degree of satisfaction.Result:A total of 24 VCFs in 10 patients were treated with PKP.All operations were successfully performed.Mean volume of bone cement inflated per balloon was 4.7ml(range 3~7 ml).In a mean follow-up for 9.1 months,5 patients died.Significant improvement occurred 1 d after PKP according to the VAS score(7.7 pre-PVP to 3.3,P0.01) and ODI assessment(72.9 to 42.6,P0.01).Seventy percent of patients were highly satisfied with the result of the PKP and 30% were satisfied.Leakage of the cement outside of the vertebral body was noted in 3 of 24 injected vertebrae(12.5%).Conclusion:VCFs caused by MM can be effectively treated by PKP,which can release pain, enhance foundation, and improve life quality.
