Abstract:We show that the order of torsion homology classes in Bar-Natan deformation of Khovanov homology is a lower bound for the unknotting number. We give examples of knots that this is a better lower bound than |s(K)/2|, where s(K) is the Rasmussen s invariant defined by the Bar-Natan spectral sequence.

Abstract:Given a knot K in S^3, let u^-(K) (respectively, u^+(K)) denote the minimum number of negative (respectively, positive) crossing changes among all unknotting sequences for K. We use knot Floer homology to construct the invariants l^-(K), l^+(K) and l(K), which give lower bounds on u^-(K), u^+(K) and the unknotting number u(K), respectively. The invariant l(K) only vanishes for the unknot, and is greater than or equal to the \nu^-(K). Moreover, the difference l(K)-\nu^-(K) can be arbitrarily large. We also present several applications towards bounding the unknotting number, the alteration number and the Gordian distance.

Abstract:We prove that all knots with unknotting number at most 21 are smoothly slice in the K3 surface. We also prove a more general statement for 4-manifolds that contain a plumbing tree of spheres. Our strategy is based on a flexible method to remove double points of immersed surfaces in 4-manifolds by tubing over neighbourhoods of embedded trees. As a byproduct, we recover a classical result of Norman and Suzuki that every knot is smoothly slice in $S^2 \times S^2$ and in $\mathbb{CP}^2 \# \overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$.

Hard Unknots and Collapsing Tangles

Abstract:This paper gives infinitely many examples of unknot diagrams that are hard, in the sense that the diagrams need to be made more complicated by Reidemeister moves before they can be simplified. In order to construct these diagrams, we prove theorems characterizing when the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles is an unknot. The key theorem shows that the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles [P/Q] and [R/S] is unknotted if and only if PS + QR has absolute value equal to 1. The paper uses these results in studying processive DNA recombination, finding minimal size unknot diagrams, generalizing to collapses to knots as well as to unknots, and in finding unknots with arbirarily high complexity. The paper is self-contained, with a review of the theory of rational tangles and a last section on relationships of the theme of the paper with other aspects of topology and number theory. The present version of the paper contains a correction to Figure 22 of the previous (and published) version, a small expansion to the section on Farey fractions, and an updated reference to the paper "Unknotting unknots" by Henrich and Kauffman.

Abstract:In 1991, Negami found an upper bound on the stick number $s(K)$ of a nontrivial knot $K$ in terms of the minimal crossing number $c(K)$ of the knot which is $s(K) \leq 2 c(K)$. In this paper we improve this upper bound to $s(K) \leq \frac{3}{2} (c(K)+1)$. Moreover if $K$ is a non-alternating prime knot, then $s(K) \leq \frac{3}{2} c(K)$.

A lower bound for the genus of a knot using the Links-Gould invariant

Abstract:The Links-Gould invariant of links $LG^{2,1}$ is a two-variable generalization of the Alexander-Conway polynomial. Using representation theory of $U_{q}\mathfrak{gl}(2 \vert 1)$, we prove that the degree of the Links-Gould polynomial provides a lower bound on the Seifert genus of any knot, therefore improving the bound known as the Seifert inequality in the case of the Alexander invariant. One practical consequence of this new genus bound is a straightforward proof of the fact that the Kinoshita-Terasaka and Conway knots have genus greater or equal to 2.

Abstract:Let $c(K)$ denote the crossing number of a knot $K$ and let $K_1\# K_2$ denote the connected sum of two oriented knots $K_1$ and $K_2$. It is a very old unsolved question that whether $c(K_1\# K_2)=c(K_1)+c(K_2)$. In this paper we show that $c(K_1\# K_2)> (c(K_1)+c(K_2))/16$.

Abstract:A weaving knot is an alternating knot whose minimal diagram is a closed braid of a lattice-like pattern. In this paper, the warping degree of a braid diagram is defined, and upper bounds of the unknotting number and the region unknotting number for some families of weaving knots are given by diagrammatical and combinatorial examination of the warping degree of weaving knot diagrams.

Abstract:The ribbon number $r(K)$ of a ribbon knot $K \subset S^3$ is the minimal number of ribbon intersections contained in any ribbon disk bounded by $K$. We find new lower bounds for $r(K)$ using $\det(K)$ and $\Delta_K(t)$, and we prove that the set $\mathfrak{R}_r~=~\{\Delta_K(t)~:~r(K)~\leq~r\}$ is finite and computable. We determine $\mathfrak{R}_2$ and $\mathfrak{R}_3$, applying our results to compute the ribbon numbers for all ribbon knots with 11 or fewer crossings, with three exceptions. Finally, we find lower bounds for ribbon numbers of links derived from their Jones polynomials.

Abstract:The slicing degree of a knot $K$ is defined as the smallest integer $k$ such that $K$ is $k$-slice in $\#^n \overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$ for some $n$. In this paper, we establish bounds for the slicing degrees of knots using Rasmussen's $s$-invariant, knot Floer homology and singular instanton homology. We compute the slicing degrees for many small knots (with crossing numbers up to $9$) and for some families of torus knots.

Abstract:We provide three 3-dimensional characterizations of the Z-slice genus of a knot, the minimal genus of a locally-flat surface in 4-space cobounding the knot whose complement has cyclic fundamental group: in terms of balanced algebraic unknotting, in terms of Seifert surfaces, and in terms of presentation matrices of the Blanchfield pairing. This result generalizes to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere and surfaces in certain simply connected signature zero 4-manifolds cobounding this homology sphere. Using the Blanchfield characterization, we obtain effective lower bounds for the Z-slice genus from the linking pairing of the double branched covering of the knot. In contrast, we show that for odd primes p, the linking pairing on the first homology of the p-fold branched covering is determined up to isometry by the action of the deck transformation group on said first homology. As an application of the new upper and lower bounds, we complete the calculation of the Z-slice genus for all prime knots with crossing number up to 12.

Abstract:In the present paper, we show that the Morimoto Conjecture on the super additivity of the tunnel numbers of knots in S-3 is true for knots K-1, K-2 in S-3 in which each K-i is either a tunnel number one or m-small, i = 1, 2. This extends two known results by Morimoto.

Abstract:Conjecturally, there are only finitely many Heegaard Floer L-space knots in $S^3$ of a given genus. We examine this conjecture for twist families of knots $\{K_n\}$ obtained by twisting a knot $K$ in $S^3$ along an unknot $c$ in terms of the linking number $\omega$ between $K$ and $c$. We establish the conjecture in case of $|\omega| \neq 1$, prove that $\{K_n\}$ contains at most three L-space knots if $\omega = 0$, and address the case where $|\omega| = 1$ under an additional hypothesis about Seifert surgeries. To that end, we characterize a twisting circle $c$ for which $\{ (K_n, r_n) \}$ contains at least ten Seifert surgeries. We also pose a few questions about the nature of twist families of L-space knots, their expressions as closures of positive (or negative) braids, and their wrapping about the twisting circle.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the following result: Let K i be a knot in a closed orientable 3-manifold M i such that (M i ,K i ) is not homeomorphic to (S 2 ×S 1, x 0 ×S 1), i = 1, 2. Suppose that the Euler Characteristic of any meridional essential surface in each knot complement E(K i ) is less than the difference of one and twice of the tunnel number of K i . Then the tunnel number of their connected sum will not go down. If in addition that the distance of any minimal Heegaard splitting of each knot complement is strictly more than 2, then the tunnel number of their connected sum is super additive.

Abstract:Given a virtual link diagram $D$, we define its unknotting index $U(D)$ to be minimum among $(m, n)$ tuples, where $m$ stands for the number of crossings virtualized and $n$ stands for the number of classical crossing changes, to obtain a trivial link diagram. By using span of a diagram and linking number of a diagram we provide a lower bound for unknotting index of a virtual link. Then using warping degree of a diagram, we obtain an upper bound. Both these bounds are applied to find unknotting index for virtual links obtained from pretzel links by virtualizing some crossings

Abstract:We determine a lower bound for the spectral radius of a graph in terms of the number of vertices and the diameter of the graph. For the specific case of graphs with diameter three we give a slightly better bound. We also construct families of graphs with small spectral radius, thus obtaining asymptotic results showing that the bound is of the right order. We also relate these results to the extremal degree/diameter problem.

Abstract:We show that the knot group of any knot in any integer homology sphere admits a non-abelian representation into $SU(3)$ such that meridians are mapped to matrices whose eigenvalues are the three distinct third roots of unity. This answers the $N=3$ case of a question posed by Xie and the first author. We also characterize when a $PU(3)$-bundle admits a flat connection. The key ingredient in the proofs is a study of the ring structure of $U(3)$ instanton Floer homology of $S^1\times \Sigma_g$. In an earlier paper, Xie and the first author stated the so-called eigenvalue conjecture about this ring, and in this paper we partially resolve this conjecture. This allows us to establish a surface decomposition theorem for $U(3)$ instanton Floer homology of sutured manifolds, and then obtain the mentioned topological applications. Along the way, we prove a structure theorem for $U(3)$ Donaldson invariants, which is the counterpart of Kronheimer and Mrowka's structure theorem for $U(2)$ Donaldson invariants. We also prove a non-vanishing theorem for the $U(3)$ Donaldson invariants of symplectic manifolds.

Abstract:This is the third article in a series devoted to the study of the asymptotic expansions of various quantum invariants related to the twist knots. In this paper, by using the saddle point method developed by Ohtsuki and Yokota, we obtain an asymptotic expansion formula for the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds obtained by doing integral $q$-surgery along the twist knots $\mathcal{K}_p$ at the root of unity $e^{\frac{4\pi\sqrt{-1}}{r}}$ ($r$ is odd).

Abstract:We have developed a reinforcement learning agent that often finds a minimal sequence of unknotting crossing changes for a knot diagram with up to 200 crossings, hence giving an upper bound on the unknotting number. We have used this to determine the unknotting number of 57k knots. We took diagrams of connected sums of such knots with oppositely signed signatures, where the summands were overlaid. The agent has found examples where several of the crossing changes in an unknotting collection of crossings result in hyperbolic knots. Based on this, we have shown that, given knots $K$ and $K'$ that satisfy some mild assumptions, there is a diagram of their connected sum and $u(K) + u(K')$ unknotting crossings such that changing any one of them results in a prime knot. As a by-product, we have obtained a dataset of 2.6 million distinct hard unknot diagrams; most of them under 35 crossings. Assuming the additivity of the unknotting number, we have determined the unknotting number of 43 at most 12-crossing knots for which the unknotting number is unknown.

Abstract:We study a local twist move on welded knots that is an analog of the virtualization move on virtual knots. Since this move is an unknotting operation we define an invariant, unknotting twist number, for welded knots. We relate the unknotting twist number with warping degree and welded unknotting number, and establish a lower bound on the twist number using Alexander quandle coloring. We also study the Gordian distance between welded knots by twist move and define the corresponding Gordian complex.
