Abstract:PURPOSE: To analyze the clinical features and treatment of oral and maxillofacial and cervical infection in pregnancy and to explore preventive methods. METHODS: Fifteen patients from December 2006 to July 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Aetiology, diagnosis, treatment and outcome were analyzed. RESULTS: The average age was28.6years, average gestational peroid was 24.9 weeks. Eleven cases were caused by maxillary third molar pericoronitis, 3 by maxillary molar apical periodontitis, 1 by parotitis. All patients underwent surgical drainage. One patient received tracheotomy. Penicillin was applied to control infections. Average treatment duration was 14 days. All patients achieved good results. All neonates were healthy. Neonatal apgar score was 9.4 and average BM was 3193g. CONCLUSIONS:Early surgical drainage remains the main treatment for oral and maxillofacial infection in pregnancy. Systemic application of antibiotics should be considered to control infection. This study did not find a definite association between oral and maxillofacial and cervical infection and adverse outcome of pregnancy.
