Abstract:The rapid development of deep sequencing and microarray technologies over the past few decades has produced a huge amount of new biological data on insects. Genomes of hundreds of species have been partially sequenced and transcriptome information has been obtained from thousands of species in recent years. The genomes of at least tens of insect species have been fully sequenced and complete transcriptome data for more than 30 species has been obtained. The deep analysis of these data requires the assistance of bioinformatics, a new cross discipline that involves statistics, computer science, information science and molecular biology. The major goals of bioinformatics are storing, managing and mining biological data. The construction and maintenance of biological databases, development of biological software and algorithms using pattern recognition, data mining, machine learning and visualization, and the implementation of tools for data mining, are the main tasks of bioinformatics. In this review, we introduce the history and progress of bioinformatics and its application to entomology. Progress in research on insect genomics, transcriptome and small RNA research are also briefly introduced.

Abstract:Proteomics aims to systematically identify and quantify all of the proteins presenting in the sample and reveal the mechanism of life. In post genome era, proteomics began to play more important role in life sci ence field.Drosophila melanogasteris one of the most widely used small model organism in biological science,which laid the foundation for functional genome due to the well annotated genome. While the research of its pro teome is still remaining a challenge in the field, especially the comprehensive research due to the technology limi tation. Protein profiling, post-translational modification, quantitative comparison and fly disease models are systemat ically reviewed in this study, which was expected to be the basis for human disease proteomics study on this mod el organism in the near future.

Abstract:The flower is the most important biological structure for ensuring angiosperms reproductive success. Not only does the flower contain critical reproductive organs, but the wide variation in morphology, color, and scent has evolved to entice specialized pollinators, and arguably mankind in many cases, to ensure the successful propagation of its species. Recent proteomic approaches have identified protein candidates related to these flower traits, which has shed light on a number of previously unknown mechanisms underlying these traits. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in proteomic research in floral biology according to the order of flower structure, from corolla to male and female reproductive organs. It summarizes mainstream proteomic methods for plant research and recent improvements on two dimensional gel electrophoresis and gel-free workflows for both peptide level and protein level analysis. The recent advances in sequencing technologies provide a new paradigm for the ever-increasing genome and transcriptome information on many organisms. It is now possible to integrate genomic and transcriptomic data with proteomic results for large-scale protein characterization, so that a global understanding of the complex molecular networks in flower biology can be readily achieved. Abstract:Recently,the amplified fragment length polymorphism(AFLP) technology has gained a lot of popularity,and is now frequently applied to a wide variety of organisms.It is characterized by high efficiency and informativeness;it is applicable to any organisms without prior knowledge of its genomic makeup.Some modifications of the method in the aspects of restriction of the DNA,system of selective amplification,the method of detection and analysis have been adopted since the appearance of AFLP.The marker technique has been widely used in diverse domains of entomological studies over the past ten years.The current trends of application of AFLP technique show that the marker has contributed significantly to progresses towards understanding genetic basis of insect diversity,and researchers have already used it to map genetic linkage group of economically and agriculturally important insects,for tagging genes and quantitative trait loci,and so on.In this review,we briefly introduced the application of AFLP in the research of useful insects,important agricultural pests and quarantine pests,and summarized the application status and prospects in entomological research.

Abstract:The proteome represents the protein pattern of a speciy,anorganism,a cell,an organelle,or even a body fluid determined quantitatively at a certain moment and under precisely defined limiting conditions.Proteome research techniques are important tools in the Post-Genome Era.Quantitative separation and analysis of proteins in the proteome involve many techniques,including sample preparation,two dimension(2D)gel electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis,chromatographic techniques,mass spectrometry,and so on.The 2D gel electrophoresis is currently a quite good method which is available to provide enough space for several thousand components and separate protein mixtures with in a few hours.Combined use of various analysis techniques and automation in instrumentation will be the recent trend in this field.

Abstract:High⁃throughput sequencing is a major breakthrough in the development of DNA sequencing technology and provides an unprecedented opportunity for modern biological scientific research, such as the DNA⁃based approach tracking the food chains among predators⁃prey or herbivores⁃host plants trophic interactions in ecosystems. This review illustrates and compares the principles of various types of technology, including the Roche 454, Illumina, and Ion Torrent technologies, and other recent progress. We also summarize studies that have used high⁃throughput sequencing technology to study interactions among generalist predators / herbivores and their prey / hosts. This review could provide new information and novel approaches to exploring molecular trophic interactions and improving our understanding of the prey / host spectrum, prey / host shift, biological control, resource allocation, conservation biology, and ecological restoration.
