Sensitivity and Specificity of BED-capture Enzyme Linked Immunoassay in Identifying Recent HIV Infestors

Abstract:Objective:To determine the sensitivity and specificity of BED-capture enzyme immunoassay(BED) in identifying recent HIV infections.Methods: HIV/AIDS cases infected at least 169 days ago were treated as old or former HIV infectors,while HIV cases who were infected with HIV within 168 days were regarded as recent HIV infectors.Serum samples of these confirmed old and recent HIV infectors were tested by BED.Results: Twenty-four cases of twenty-nine true recent HIV infectors were positive by the BED test,the sensitivity of BED was 82.76%.Two hundred and sixty-four cases of 264 old HIV infectors were negative for the BED test,the specificity of BED was 82.58%.The specificity of BED-CEIA was increasing with the HIV infection time of participants.The specificity was very low while the false positivity was very high among old HIV infectors whose infection time was within 169-365 days.Conclusion: The overall sensitivity and specificity of BED were relatively high in identifying recent HIV infections.Cautions should be given to a substantial proportion of false positives or false negatives of BED in identifying recent HIV infections among certain subgroups of HIV-infected patients.
