Abstract:It is possible to reduce the cost of a fuel cell system with a self humidifying stack and replacing the air-condenser with a fan. This low cost PEMFC is suitable for portable appliances such as laptop computers, smart phones, cameras, etc. This paper describes a new model for the portable PEMFC with self-humidifying stack and fan. The model looks at the effect of temperature, hydrogen flow and oxygen flow on the self-humidifying stack, and gives the dynamic output performance of the PEMFC for step load variation with simulation results. Finally, experimental results are presented to validate the simulation results.
Experiment and Simulation on Centrifugal Compressor in Fuel Cell Vehicle

Abstract:The performance of centrifugal compressor in fuel cell vehicle was studied by simulation and experiment based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD).The mathematical model used k-e equation group to simulate the turbulent flow in the stage of centrifugal compressor,then numerical results of the stable flow in the centrifugal compressor were obtained by a finite volume method.The simulation results agreed well with the experimental data.Secondary flows which would generate energy loss near the suction side of the impeller were observed in the simulation.Based on the mathematical model and the experimental results,the influence of relative Mach number on the secondary flows and the relationship between circulation distribution and relative Mach number were analyzed.Then,a circulation distribution which could effectively suppress the secondary flows near the suction side of the impeller was presented.Analysis indicates that the manufactured centrifugal compressor can satisfy the application requirements of fuel cell vehicles.Preconditioned by keeping the impeller's working ability,the secondary flows can be obviously weakened by controlling the circulation's derivative to meridional streamline on hub and shroud line of impeller,thus the impeller performance is improved.

Abstract:The lifetime of vehicular proton exchange membrane fuel cell is one of the key factors restricting the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles. It's well recognized variable load conditions have the greatest impact on fuel cell degradation. Studying dynamic load characteristics is very crucial for fuel cell long-life design and optimal control. Since experiments are not easy to monitor fuel cell internal distribution, the dynamic response studying is commonly implemented in model simulation. The fuel cell system has complicated structures and large differences in length scale, to make up for the insufficient precision and limited research content in existing models, this paper uses an innovative modeling method, Simulink and Fluent co-simulation method to establish a fuel cell system-level model. It can obtain not only response characteristics of auxiliary subsystems and the system dynamic performance, but also the internal physical quantities distribution changes. Multiple simulations and comparisons are made to observe voltage dynamic response and internal concentration distribution. Impacts of subsystem's response characteristics and system's critical operational parameters and mechanism behind them are analyzed. The co-simulation method and obtained results in this paper can be used for future research of fuel cell system-level modeling and provide theoretical basis for dynamic capacity optimization.

Abstract:Aiming at the crash safety of the hydrogen supply system in a fuel cell bus, a finite element model of hydrogen supply system for frontal crash simulation is built and the strength and stiffness characteristics of the hydrogen supply system of fuel cell bus are analyzed. The results show that the simulation results agree well with test ones and the crash safety of the hydrogen supply system in the fuel cell bus meets the requirements of related regulations.

Abstract:Simulation research work is presented for fuel cell supercapacitor hybrid powertrain. Sub-systems of the fuel cell hybrid powertrain are modeled, simulation system is developed and load following control strategy is designed. Vehicle dynamic and fuel economy performance are investigated through simulation method and the control strategy is verified through experiments on dynamic testbed. Simulation and test result show that supercapacitor can work well for power assist and fuel economy performance is improved through brake energy recovery.

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive review on the research and development in multi-scale numerical modeling and simulation of PEM fuel cells. An overview of recent progress in PEM fuel cell modeling has been provided. Fundamental transport phenomena in PEM fuel cells and the corresponding mathematical formulation of macro-scale models are analyzed. Various important issues in PEM fuel cell modeling and simulation are examined in detail, including fluid flow and species transport, electron and proton transport, heat transfer and thermal management, liquid water transport and water management, transient response behaviors, and cold-start processes. Key areas for further improvements have also been discussed.

Abstract:A CFD simulation platform for fuel cell system is developed,on which the performance of the fu- el cell system with centrifugal compressor is simulated and compared with that of the ordinary fuel cell system using scroll-type compressor.The results indicate that the fuel cell system with centrifugal compre'ssor can attain an opera- tion range as the ordinary system has and is higher in system efficiency and better in humidification performance.

Abstract:Aiming at the demand for subjective evaluation of driveability for fuel cell vehicles, the modeling and evaluation method of driveability for fuel cell vehicles were studied in this paper. Firstly, a real-time model of the fuel cell vehicle powertrain system was established, which included the fuel cell model, power battery model, DC/DC converter model and drive motor model. Secondly, it was integrated with the vehicle dynamics model to form a virtual prototype of a fuel cell vehicle. And a virtual subjective evaluation platform for fuel cell vehicles was built by combining the virtual prototype and high-fidelity driving simulator. Thirdly, a subjective evaluation method of driveability for fuel cell vehicles was proposed, which included the starting performance, acceleration performance, uniform speed performance and tip-in/tip-out performance. Finally, the paper used the platform and method mentioned above to conduct subjective evaluations of the fuel cell vehicles.

Abstract:The powertrain of a hybrid fuel cell city bus consists of a 60-kW fuel cell engine, battery packs, a boost DC/DC converter connecting the fuel cell engine with the DC power bus and an induction motor. Using the advanced modeling tools EASY5®, this paper gives the vehicle longitudinal model of the fuel cell city bus firstly. Then, the vehicle system control strategy is obtained based on this vehicle longitudinal model. Finally, the simulation results are also compared with that of the prototype vehicle road test to validate the EASY5® model and the control strategies. © EVS-22 Yokohama, Japan.

Abstract:For modeling and simulation of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, validation has been an essential and challenging task. This study implements a comprehensive validation including both overall cell performance and local distribution characteristics under different operating conditions with experimental data from two public sources. Polarization curve, cell ohmic resistance, current density distribution and temperature distribution are all involved. A "three dimensional + one dimensional" ("3D+1D") model is adopted which simplifies part of cell components in order to boost the calculation efficiency. The validation methodology is clarified by listing those undetermined model parameters and analyzing their "accessibility" as well as correlations with the three kinds of voltage losses (activation, ohmic and mass transfer). It is found that the control regions of ohmic voltage loss and concentration voltage loss overlap among a wide current density range, which may lead to misjudgment in the validation process. The details of parameter adjustment are also shared. Simulation results of the two validation tests both obtain decent agreement with the experiments and reflect consistent variation trends as the condition changes. The liquid water in gas channel is proved to have a double effect on cell performance and should be taken into careful consideration especially under low humidification and high current density working conditions.

Abstract:A forward looking simulation platform for fuel cell hybrid powertrain is developed in Matlab/Simulink environment in this paper. Components of fuel cell hybrid powertrain are tested and characteristic parameters are obtained to build models. The component models are verified by comparing with experiment data. Diver model is constructed for forward looking simulation method. Controller model including power distribution strategy and regenerative braking strategy is separated from component models. The simulation platform is validated with data from testbed experiments. Four configurations of fuel cell hybrid powertrain are studied and analyzed using this simulation platform. Application of the platform shows it is a powerful tool for development of fuel cell vehicle. © 2008 IEEE.

Abstract:This article addresses the need for improved fuel cell performance in vehicles through comprehensive research, encompassing literature review, fuel cell modeling, data analysis, and power curve optimization. It begins by analyzing experimental data from fuel cell buses to calibrate a dynamic model, ensuring its precision. This dynamic model accounts for internal heat and mass transfer within fuel cells, simulating water content levels under specific conditions. The study concludes by optimizing fuel cell power output curves, aiming for consistent average power. Four modes were researched (Real operation, Steady, Two-point-steady, and Triangular mode). Dryness is eliminated, and the time of flooding is decreased by 61.6% in the steady mode compared to the real operation. Furthermore, the water content during the operation of Two-point-steady and Triangular mode did not experience dryness or flooding. This research introduces a dynamic model for enhancing automotive fuel cell operation, holding significant implications for the transportation sector’s adoption of fuel cell technology.

Abstract:This paper is to present a test platform for automotive fuel cell systems and report some test results on this platform. The test platform was developed based on a test bed of internal combustion engine with a dynamometer, the dynamometer acted as both a load and a measurement instrument. A fuel cell engine, a DC/DC converter and an induction traction drive motor with a DC/AC inverter were integrated to a system and were tested in the platform. Test results of one fuel cell system showed that the efficiency was 41% (LHV) while 50kW of electrical power is produced in the engine; the cell current density was 400mA/cm2 when 0.65V of average cell voltage is obtained in the stacks; the maximum mechanical power of the fuel cell system was 41kW, and the best specific fuel consumption was 102g/kWh. This test platform is feasible for evaluating all components of fuel cell systems, such as stacks, parasitic powers, engines, DC/DC converters and traction drive motors; and in this platform it is convenient to uncover problems of electromagnetism compatibility in the fuel cell systems before being mounted into vehicles.

Abstract:The high-efficiency thermal management is one of the major challenges for fuel cell vehicles due to the diversity and complexity of the components and systems. Thermal management systems and corresponding control strategies can affect the components' performance, durability and reliability, the vehicle's driving performance, fuel economy and occupant thermal comfort. The main objective of this study is to perform multi-case simulation analysis of the fuel cell vehicle thermal management system through modeling to derive the operating mechanism and thermal performance analysis of each subsystem and integrated system. To achieve this purpose, an integrated thermal management system model with different control strategies was proposed based on a fuel cell vehicle prototype, powered by a 65 kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack and a Li-ion battery with a capacity of 15 kWh, which considers the cooling of the driving system, fuel cell stack, battery and cabin. The results showed that the critical temperature of each subsystem could be controlled within a reasonable range even in the battery charging mode, where the fuel cell generated about 136.6 % more thermal power than the discharging mode to charge the battery. Moreover, in the series structure of the radiators and condenser, the average temperatures of the inlet air of the motor and the subsequent fuel cell radiator were respectively 3.9 °C and 7 °C higher than the ambient temperature (35 °C), thus reducing the impact of the radiator fan. The proposed model may provide the contribution in the design of integrated solutions for thermal management systems for fuel cell hybrid vehicles under high temperature scenarios, including control strategies development and system-level coupling analysis.

Abstract:The paper proposes the modelling of an electric propulsion system that uses as the main energy source, a Fuel Cell. The model is based on the structure of Toyota MIRAI, the first electric vehicle equipped with Fuel Cell developed in series in 2015. The model is developed under MATLAB Simulink software and adapts existing fuel cell and vehicle blocks to the real vehicle case. The simulation results contain the time evolution of some important parameters for both fuel cell and vehicle. Conclusions analyse these results and suggest future possible pathways of study.

Abstract:Thermal management is an important factor in securing the safe and effective operation of a fuel cell vehicle (FCV). A parameterized stack model of a 100 kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is constructed by matlab/Simulink to design and asses the thermal management characteristics of a 100 kW full-powered FCV. The cooling components model, with parameters obtained by theoretical calculation based on the cooling requirement, is developed in the commercial solver GT-COOL. A thermal management simulation platform is constructed by coupling the stack model and cooling components. The accuracy of the modeling method for the stack is validated by comparing with the experimental data. The relationship between the operating temperature and output performance of the fuel cell stack is revealed based on the simulation model. The simulation results show that the operating temperature has a considerable influence on stack performance under high-current operation, and the inlet and outlet temperatures of the stack change nearly linearly with the increasing environmental temperature. The heat dissipation potential of the thermal management system under the high-load condition is also verified. The temperatures and coolant flow of core components, including the stack, DC/DC, air compressor, and driving motor, can meet the cooling requirements.

Abstract:A model of a 5 kW air-hydrogen proton-exchange membrane fuel cell stack is developed using a combination of mechanistic and empirical modeling techniques. Utilizing the relationship between fuel cell stack and single cell, the paper details the mechanistic descriptions of single cell and development of fuel cell stack including the thermodynamic equilibrium potential, activation over-voltage, ohmic resistance losses and empirical expression for resistivity of single cell. A series of experiments were designed to obtain parameters in activation overvoltage equation. The model provides estimation of polarization curves of the fuel cell stack under different conditions. Its effectiveness is proved through model validation and simulation studies.

Abstract:Based on a 12m long fuel cell(FC) city bus,the features of FC +Ultracapacitor(FC+C) drive system are investigated.After the structure of FC+C power system is proposed,the problem of parameter matching of complete vehicle is discussed.Then a simulation model for complete vehicle is set up,and a simulation is carried out on the performance and fuel economy of the complete vehicle.The results indicate that FC+C power system can meet the performance requirements of city bus with fuel economy even better than its foreign counterpart.

Abstract:With the growing concerns over the energy crisis and environmental pollution, fuel cells have attracted increasing attention. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have promising prospects due to their economic efficiency, low noise, and minimal environmental pollution. However, the existing commercial testing systems for PEMFCs suffer from limited functionalities and lack of scalability. In this study, we propose the design of a testing platform specifically tailored for water-cooled PEMFCs with a power greater than 1 kW. The functionality of the testing platform is verified through static and dynamic testing, demonstrating its compliance with the required standards. Furthermore, a fault diagnosis model for fuel cell stacks is developed based on the back-propagation (BP) neural network, achieving an overall accuracy rate of over 95% for fault classification.
