Energy-efficient mobile data collection in energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks

Abstract:Environmental energy harvesting technologies have provided potential for battery-powered wireless sensor networks to have perpetual network operations. To design a robust network that can adapt to not only temporal but also spatial variations of ambient energy sources, in this paper, we utilize mobility to circumvent communication bottlenecks, by employing a mobile data collector, called SenCar. We propose a two-stage approach for mobile data collection. In the first stage, SenCar makes stops at a subset of selected sensor locations to collect data packets in a multi-hop fashion. We provide a selection algorithm to search for sensor locations with most residual energy while guaranteeing a bounded tour length. Then we design a distributed data gathering algorithm to achieve maximum network utility by adjusting data rates, link scheduling and flow routing that adapts to spatial temporal environmental energy variations. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms are validated by extensive numerical results.

Abstract:Recent advances in environmental energy harvesting technologies have provided great potentials for traditional battery powered sensor networks to achieve perpetual operations. Due to dynamics from the temporal profiles of ambient energy sources, most of the studies so far have focused on designing and optimizing energy management schemes on single sensor node, but overlooked the impact of spatial variations of energy distribution when sensors work together at different locations. To design a robust sensor network, in this paper, we use mobility to circumvent communication bottlenecks caused by spatial energy variations. We employ a mobile collector, called SenCar, to collect data from designated sensors and balance energy consumptions in the network. To show spatial-temporal energy variations, we first conduct a case study in a solar-powered network and analyze possible impact on network performance. Next, we present a two-step approach for mobile data collection. First, we adaptively select a subset of sensor locations where the SenCar stops to collect data packets in a multi-hop fashion. We develop an adaptive algorithm to search for nodes based on their energy and guarantee data collection tour length is bounded. Second, we focus on designing distributed algorithms to achieve maximum network utility by adjusting data rates, link scheduling, and flow routing that adapts to the spatial-temporal environmental energy fluctuations. Finally, our numerical results indicate the distributed algorithms can converge to optimality very fast and validate its convergence in case of node failure. We also show advantages of our framework such as it can adapt to spatial-temporal energy variations and demonstrate its superiority compared to the network with static data sink.

Abstract:According to structural characteristics of the wireless sensor node,and the technology for dynamic power management,an improved dynamic power management was presented with real working conditions.Then some energy consumption models were established in different working conditions,and then analyzed in measurable way.The results show that the energy consumption for the wireless sensor node is decreased effectively after using the improved dynamic power management,and the analyzed results can lay agood foundation for further improved design of real wireless sensor node in energy saving condition.

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks (WSN), battery energy efficiency is a crucial issue since the sensor nodes in WSNs are generally driven by nonrenewable batteries. In recent years, there has been an increasing trend of incorporating special battery characteristics into network protocol design and optimization. This paper provides the overview of battery energy consumption optimization for two specific communication tasks. To do that, we introduce a realistic node model incorporating circuit power consumptions and battery nonlinearity. Based on this model, one can choose a more battery-energy-efficient modulation scheme for the entire network. By a case study, we show that the modulation selection depends on the internode distance. Then, for specific communication links within the network, one can either use single-hop direct link communication or multi-hop communication by utilizing intermediate nodes for information relaying. Our analyses show that from the battery energy efficiency perspective, the choice of relaying depends on the transmission distance and the relay node position.

Abstract:Energy consumption remains as a major obstacle for full deployment and exploitation of wireless sensor network (WSN) technology nowadays. This paper presents the design and implementation of an energy-aware sensor node, which can help in constructing energy-efficient WSNs. An energy-efficient strategy, which aims at minimizing energy consumption from both the sensor node level and the network level in a WSN, is proposed. To minimize the communication energy consumption of the sensor node, the distance between the transmitter and the receiver is estimated before available transmission, and then, the lowest transmission power needed to transmit the measurement data is calculated and determined. The sensor nodes are also set to sleep mode between two consecutive measurements for energy saving in normal operating conditions. Furthermore, energy saving can be achieved by estimating the energy consumption within the whole network under different network configurations and then by choosing the most energy-efficient one.

Abstract:This paper discusses metrics and evaluation methods for energy efficiency in wireless networks. It is proposed that carbon emissions are the standard for measuring energy efficiency, and energy efficiency is evaluated according to different network loads. Using the metric model, several methods are available for reducing energy consumption, including decreasing equipment usage, radio resource scheduling, and node cooperation. Monitoring and evaluating energy efficiency should also be added to wireless network protocols as an extra module. Technical challenges associated with optimizing and evaluating energy efficiency are discussed in conclusion.

Furthermore, sensors that collect medical data or measurements of temperature and humidity, in various critical environments. The proper types of network that may be used in such difficult environment are Wireless Sensor Networks, that used to sense and process data. Additionally, the Wireless Sensor Networks have been used in the environment of Internet of Things and smart cities in the general services and health fields. All these reasons have made researchers focus on Wireless Sensor Networks and addressing the challenges that face them. The most important challenge facing this type of network is energy consumption and increase battery life. This paper discusses the methodologies used in energy conservation in Wireless Sensor Networks, such as data reduction technology, shortest path selection and artificial intelligence algorithms used in smart routing and energy saving. Besides, we have introduced comparisons between the standard algorithms which are suggested by the researchers, to make a clear picture of the energy consumption problem and propose some effective solutions in Wireless Sensor Networks field.

Abstract:Reducing energy consumption in wireless communications has attracted increasing attention recently. Advanced physical layer techniques such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), cognitive radio, network coding, cooperative communication, etc.; new network architectures such as heterogeneous networks, distributed antennas, multi-hop cellulars, etc.; as well as radio and network resource management schemes such as various cross-layer optimization algorithms, dynamic power saving, multiple radio access technologies coordination, etc. have been proposed to address this issue. In this article, we overview these technologies and present the state-of-the-art on each aspect. Some challenges that need to be solved in the area are also described.

Abstract:The performance of wireless sensor networks depends largely on the deployment of sensor nodes as well as their lifetime mainly determined by the energy consumption. Most current attention, however, has been paid to energy-efficient deployment. With the goal of facilitating further evolution of wireless sensor networks, recently proposed deployment schemes for wireless sensor networks are surveyed. The focus is on coverage and connectivity, which are regarded as the most important respects of network performance and energy-efficiency. Depending on the application and different actions in the network, coverage issues are classified into static and dynamic ones, while connectivity issues into pure connectivity and routing algorithm based connectivity. An overview of each of these areas is presented, and the performance of existing methodologies is discussed. In order to spark new interests and developments in this field, some crucial open issues are pointed out.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks(WSNs) have gained worldwide attention in recent years. These sensor nodes can sense, measure, and gather information from the environment, and based on some local decision process, they can transmit the sensed data to the user. A wireless sensor network has important applications such as remote environmental monitoring and target tracking. In order to improve the comfortableness and energy-saving performance of indoor, in this paper, a wireless sensor network energy-efficiency and management platform is designed and implemented, it combines WSN with energy-saving management, and takes advantage of the data visualization system to help managing the large data produced by network. The system creates energy consumption models and environmental models in different application scenarios by various parameters in environment acquired from sensors, thus it can give the predicted value and strategy of energy conservation. Our system is shown to exhibit excellent performance.

Abstract:Sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are often expected to operate on batteries for a long period of time. Battery power-efficiency is a critical factor dictating the lifetime of WSNs. In this paper, we compare two pulse-based modulations, namely pulse position modulation (PPM) and on-off keying (OOK), both of which are suitable for WSNs due to their low complexity transceivers. The comparison is based on a general model that integrates typical WSN transmission and reception modules with realistic nonlinear battery models. We analyze and compare the battery power-efficiency of PPM and OOK using coherent detection, and with bit error rate (BER) and cutoff rate criteria. Our results reveal that in sparse WSNs, PPM is more battery power-efficient. In dense WSNs, OOK outperforms PPM. In addition, the battery power-efficiency of OOK increases as the required cutoff rate decreases.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging key technology for future industries and everyday lives of people, where a myriad of battery operated sensors, actuators, and smart objects are connected to the Internet to provide services such as mobile healthcare, intelligent transport system, environmental monitoring, etc. Since energy efficiency is of utmost importance to these battery constrained IoT devices, IoT-related standards and research works have focused on the device energy conserving issues. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on energy conserving issues and solutions in using diverse wireless radio access technologies for IoT connectivity, e.g., the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) machine type communications, IEEE 802.11ah, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and Z-Wave. We look into the literature in broad areas of standardization, academic research, and industry development, and structurally summarize the energy conserving solutions based on several technical criteria. We also propose future research directions regarding energy conserving issues in wireless networking-based IoT.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are widely used in various fields such as military, industrial, and transportation for real-time monitoring, sensing, and data collection of different environments or objects. However, the development of WSNs is hindered by several limitations, including energy, storage space, computing power, and data transmission rate. Among these, the availability of power energy plays a crucial role as it directly determines the lifespan of WSN. To extend the life cycle of WSN, two key approaches are power supply improvement and energy conservation. Therefore, we propose an energy harvesting system and a low-energy-consumption mechanism for WSNs. Firstly, we delved into the energy harvesting technology of WSNs, explored the utilization of solar energy and mechanical vibration energy to ensure a continuous and dependable power supply to the sensor nodes, and analyzed the voltage output characteristics of bistable piezoelectric cantilever. Secondly, we proposed a neighbor discovery mechanism that utilizes a separation beacon, is based on reply to ACK, and can facilitate the identification of neighboring nodes. This mechanism operates at a certain duty cycle ratio, significantly reduces idle listening time and results in substantial energy savings. In comparison to the Disco and U-connect protocols, our proposed mechanism achieved a remarkable reduction of 66.67% and 75% in the worst discovery delay, respectively. Furthermore, we introduced a data fusion mechanism based on integer wavelet transform. This mechanism effectively eliminates data redundancy caused by spatiotemporal correlation, resulting in a data compression rate of 5.42. Additionally, it significantly reduces energy consumption associated with data transmission by the nodes.
