Investigation of the effectiveness and feasibility of a HIV/AIDS health education program driven by general practitioners among females working in entertainment venues

Abstract:Objective To evaluate feasibility and effectiveness of a HIV/AIDS health education program driven by general practitioners among female workers in entertainment venues(FWIEVs) and provide scientific evidence for national AIDS/STD prevention strategy.Methods Three community health centers in Haidian district of Beijing were selected as pilot sites,where women counseling desks were set up to provide intervention services by trained general practitioners(GPs) for local FWIEVs,which included face-to-face counseling,distributing AIDS/STD related educational materials and free condoms,etc.The effectiveness and feasibility of this program were assessed by interviews with GPs and senior administrators and by questionnaires filled in by the target population.Results Following preventive activites,the integrated knowledge scores regarding STDs among FWIEVs increased from 5.2% to 54.6%(χ2=63.98,P<0.01),while the integrated knowledge score of HIV/AIDS increased from 6.3% to 57.5%(χ2=0.841,P<0.01);95.7% of the target population were willing to accept such service.All the GPs stated that it was their responsibilities to provide such service and were willing to continue it.Conclusion Adopting GPs-driven AIDS/STD health education with multiple interventions including setting up counseling desks and successfully integrating HIV/STD preventive services into the routine health practice of GPs,the long-term stable interventions on the target population are applicable and effective.
