Abstract:Background & Aims: Alien plant invasion has significantly threatened native biodiversity, ecological security, socio-economic development, and human health.Consequently, exploring the mechanisms of alien plant invasion and its ecological impacts are of great importance to the ecologically sustainable development of our country.Both questions are also key topics in the field of invasion ecology.Over the past decade, ecologists have conducted much research and achieved fruitful outcomes, providing theoretical guidance for the prevention and management of invasive alien plants and biodiversity conservation.Progresses: Based on domestic and international studies in this field over the past decade, the present article reviews the progress of plant invasion ecology, focusing on the following three aspects of the field.First, we present the roles of species characteristics, biotic and abiotic environments on alien plant invasion.Second, we review the impacts of alien plant invasion on native ecosystems.Third, we briefly introduce the term 'native plant invasion' as an analog to alien plant invasion, as well as applications of multi-omics technology in the area.Prospects: The review looks ahead to further developments in invasion ecology, including that (1) multiple species experiments rather than single species experiments are more suited to obtaining gerneralizable findings; (2) the geographical scale is increasing, such as from local scale to latitudinal gradient pattern; (3) more studies are integrating multiple invasion theories, rather than one hypothesis, into a unified framework.
Status Analysis of the Ecologic Risk Assessment of Invasive Alien Plants in China

Abstract:Biological invasion has become one of the hot spots of ecologic environment problems in the world. The study on the ecologic risk evaluation of invasive alien plants is aim to evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the probability of the alient plants invasion and the damage that it could bring to the ecosystem, and to reach the goal of ecological risk management so as to improve the eco-environment and economic coordinated development. Basded on the present situation of invasive alien plants ecological risk evaluation in China, this thesis mainly comprehensively analyzed the sources of invasive alien plants ecological risk and the damage which may cause, explored the assessment method and comprehensive evaluation model on the invasive alien plants ecological risk, established the indexes system and judging standard of alien plants invasive risk, and classified the alien plants risk levels in our country. In the end of thesis, some suggestions on the ecological risk management of invasive alien plants were put forward.

Abstract:Invasion of habitats by non-native species is one of the major factors that threaten global biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.China is becoming one of the most severely invaded countries in the world with increasing frequency of deliberate species introduction,international tourism and worldwide trade of agricultural products.A comprehensive understanding of invasion process and involved mechanism is very necessary to avoid the outbreak of invasive species and prevent new invasion.Solidago canadensis L,the worldwide invader with a invasion history over 70 years in China,has been extensively studied in the last decades.However,few studies concerned the persistent and profound impacts on local environment induced by invasion,and their feedbacks on subsequent invasion and plant community dynamics.Here,we reviewed the successful invasion mechanisms of S.canadensis from its biological characteristics,invasibility of the introduced range,allelopathic effect and plant-soil feedbacks based on novel interests and recent advancements,analyzed and evaluated the inherent relations between four aspects above.It suggested that invasion was a complicated biological process that involved multitrophic interactions of herbivores,carnivores,plants and decomposers,and a result of interactions between multiple mechanisms,among which the most far reaching reason was disturbance by human activities.The strong vegetative propagules produced by rhizome of S.canadensis strengthened its population established in invaded habitat,and the numerous fertile offspring expanded new habitat through wind dispersal.The high phenotype plasticity to resource fluctuation and high tolerance to stress conditions offered extra advantages over local competitors.These extrinsic performance could partially be explained by intrinsic features as S.canadensis was a polyploid complex and characterized by high genetic diversity.Moreover,the strong allelopathic effects on native plants and soil borne pathogens significantly inhibited potential antagonists,which undoubtedly further extended its dominance.Susceptibility of the introduced range resulted from appropriate climate,low biotic resistance and strong human disturbance provided favorable conditions for invasion.Besides,facilitated by mycorrhizal mutualism also played an important role in the invasion of S.canadensis.Community structure of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi was changed in a way that favored S.canadensis more than native host plants.The mechanism of host preference remained unclear and represented an intriguing field that awaited to be intensively studied.Up to now,however,enemy release from goldenrod specific gallmaker and other pathogens in China did not show any positive impacts on its growth and reproduction.Although parasitized by Cuscuta japonica exhibited an obvious biological control potential,its ecological risks need to be further examined and evaluated before extensive application.Prospects for the study of S.canadensis in the future were proposed with emphases on(1) isolation,structure determination and in situ acting mechanism illumination of allelochemicals;(2) establishment and improvement of database,population dynamic and spreading tendency prediction using mathematical models;(3) long term monitoring on post invasion environmental changes,study on functions of S.canadensis in ecosystem and co-evolution with local organisms and(4) proper utilization,effective control and eradication method of S.canadensis.
The Present Situation of Alien Invasive Plants in Anhui Province and a Comparison with the Other Provinces in China

Abstract:Based on the field investigation and the related literatures,93 species of alien invasive plants belonging to 26 families had been founded so far in Anhui province.These species were analyzed on their original places,life-forms and harmfulness.The results showed that : The most abundant original places were America and Europe,respectively,involving 52 and 23 species.There were 88 species of herbs,including 10 species virulent weeds,3 species poisonous plants and 5 species harmful quarantine weeds in China.Compared with the other provinces and cities in China,the number and ratio of alien invasive plants were so high that Anhui province faced more and more serious problems about invasion of alien plants.

Abstract:Plant invasion is significantly affected by environmental factors in the recipient habitats and affects the stability and sustainable development of society. The invasiveness of alien plants may be increased by anthropogenic-mediated disturbances, such as fluctuations in nutrients caused by excessive emissions of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). To improve our understanding of the interactions between N and P fluctuations and invasive alien plants, the current report focuses on the biogeochemical behavior of N and P among invasive alien plants, native plants, and the soil within the plant–soil ecosystem. Our research, together with a synthesis of the literature, shows that fluctuations in N and P resources provide more opportunities and competitiveness for plant invasion. At the same time, the biogeochemical cycles of N and P are promoted because of their efficient and increased utilization and rate of release by invasive alien plants. However, there is no consensus on whether the N and P compositions of invasive species are different from those of the natives in their habitat. Quantitative studies that compare N and P contents in plant, litter, and soil between native plant communities and invaded communities on a global scale are an indispensable area of research focus for the future.

Alien, Naturalized and Invasive Plants in China

Abstract:Invasive species are a subset of naturalized species, and naturalized species are a subset of alien species. Determining the relationship among these three assemblages would be helpful in predicting and preventing biological invasion. Here, we reviewed the families, lifeforms, origins, introduction pathways and phylogenetic diversity of alien, naturalized and invasive vascular plants in China. The results show that species in the Asteraceae, Fabaceae and Poaceae families had a high dominance among alien, naturalized and invasive species. Moreover, almost all alien species in the Amaranthaceae, Solanaceae, Convolvulaceae and Euphorbiaceae families became naturalized species, and about 26.7% of the naturalized species became invasive species. Perennial herbs comprised a higher proportion of alien species than did annual herbs, though annual herbs were more suited to becoming invasive than perennial herbs. A considerable proportion (57.8%) of invasive species were introduced from America. More than half (56.5%) of alien species were introduced for their ornamental value, and half of these have become naturalized in China. Moreover, about half (55.2%) of all invasive species were introduced for their economic value (including ornamental, foraging and medicinal purposes). Invasive species were phylogenetically clustered and phylogenetically distant from alien and naturalized species, which indicates that phylogenetic differences could be helpful in becoming invasive. There is no doubt that human activity plays a significant role in biological invasion. This study suggests that when introducing alien species to a region, decision-makers should certainly consider the species’ phylogeny, beyond just its fundamental characteristics.
Historical introduction, geographical distribution, and biological characteristics of alien plants in China

Abstract:Using the published literature and records, this study investigated the historical introduction, geographical distribution, and biological characteristics of 404 alien plants in 32 provinces (including municipalities) in China. The results showed that three fifths of the alien plants was introduced for intentional purposes, and the introduction of alien plants increased with time from 139 BC to the current time, especially during historical events that played an important part in the process of introduction. The geographical distribution of alien plant species tended to decrease from the south and the east to the north and the west. Annual average precipitation (Y = 7.51X + 7.05, R2 = 0.67) and temperature (Y = 0.07X + 41.54, R2 = 0.67) had a linear relationship with alien plant introduction throughout China. Furthermore, population density and economic conditions also affected and promoted plant invasions in China. The life forms were well adapted to regional precipitation and temperature, but different life forms of alien plants were not consistent with the distribution tendency based on the quantity of alien plants. There was a higher percentage of annual and biennial plants in the northern provinces (e.g. 66.7 and 15.7% in Inner Mongolia), whereas there were more perennial and woody plant species in the southern provinces (e.g. 37.0 and 21.2% in Hainan). Family characteristics could not accurately predict plant invasions; however, predictions based on genera were acceptable. In addition, the origin of alien plants can also predict the distribution and potential risk of invasions. Thus, our study investigated the factors affecting plant invasions in order to provide information on the prevention and control of alien plants.

Responses of Soil Microbial Community Size, Respiration Rate and Functional Diversity to Invasive Plant Species Richness

Abstract:Co-invasion of exotic plant species is common in the field, but works to date have focused on the study of single or two exotic species. Few studies tested effects of plant species richness over two invasive species on plant, soil and microbial properties. In the study, three-invasive species vegetation produced greater plant biomass than the native, single- and two- invasive species vegetations. The soil covered by three-invasive species vegetation harbored higher soil organic carbon, NH4+-N and pH, but less NO3- -N than the soils covered by other vegetations. The three-invasive species vegetation enhanced bacterial utilizations of carbohydrate and miscellaneous compounds to 2.2 and 2.5 times greater, and also fungal utilizations of amino acid and miscellaneous compounds to 1.3 and 2.5 times greater than the native soil. Principal components analysis identified a significant difference of fungal carbon utilization patterns between the native and three-invasive species soils, which was mainly mediated by SOC and total nitrogen contents as confirmed by redundancy analysis and linear fitting. Overall, the roles the invasive plant richness played in mediating plant biomass, soil and microbial biomass and carbon utilization properties are mostly positive and non-additive, thus facilitating the further co-invasion of exotic plant species.

Abstract:The interspecific relationships between 3 invasive plants and 10 native plants. >0 meant that the native plant took competitive superiority in the mixture, while <0 meant the invasive plant took competitive superiority in the mixture. Invasive plants exert significant ecological impacts on native plants, communities, and ecosystems. However, consistent conclusions regarding how traits of invasive plants, native plants, and their divergences affect invasion dynamics are still lacking. Here, we conducted a pairwise common garden experiment to investigate how invasion was influenced not only by invasive plants but also by native plants, aiming to elucidate the role of invasive‐plant traits, native‐plant traits, and their divergences in invasion processes. Our findings revealed variations in invasive stage depending on the combinations of invasive and native plants. Specifically, native plants such as A. argyi, A. lavandulifolia, and C. album exhibited competitive superiority when co‐occurring with the three invasive plants. S. viridis, A. vestita, and A. annua had competitive superiority when they co‐occurred with E. canadensis, G. quadriradiata, and E. annuus respectively. Furthermore, our results demonstrated that the competitive abilities of invasive plants were primarily influenced by factors such as height, diameter, and biomass allocation, while native plants' competitive abilities were mainly affected by diameter, biomass allocation, and function group differences. Moreover, our analysis revealed that invasive‐plant traits, native‐plant traits, their divergences, and their interactions together explained 36.88% of the variation in invasion dynamics, with invasive‐plant traits and the native‐plant traits explaining 10.19% and 6.88%, respectively. In conclusion, the traits of invasive and native plants, along with their divergences, significantly influence interspecific relationships, and influencing the invasive stages. Divergences in competitive strategies between the native plants and invasive plants facilitated invasion processes. Our study not only contributes to understanding the mechanisms underlying invasion, but also provides a scientific foundation for predicting and managing the negative effects of invasive plants.

Abstract:In natural ecosystems, energy mainly flows along food chains in food webs. Numerous studies have shown that plant invasions influence ecosystem functions through altering food webs. In recent decades, more attention has been paid to the effects of alien plants on local food webs. In this review, we analyze the influence of exotic plants on food webs and pathways, and explore the impacts of local food web characteris- tics on community invasibility. Invasive plants alter food webs mainly by changing basal resources and envi- ronment conditions in different ways. First, they are consumed by native herbivores due to their high avail- ability, and are therefore incorporated into the native food web. Second, if they show low availability to na- tive herbivores, a new food web is generated through introduction of new consumers or by changing the en- ergy pathway. Third, environmental changes induced by plant invasions may alter population density and feeding behavior of various species at different trophic levels, thus alien plants will affect the communities and food web structures along non-trophic pathways. The influence of the local food web on plant invasions depends on web size and trophic connections. Issues that deserve attention in future studies are raised and discussed. Future research should extend from short-term experiments to long-term monitoring. More quan- titative researches to define the responses of food web parameters are needed. In addition, recovering of food web structure and species interaction in restored habitats is an important issue requiring future research.
Effects of Microplastics, Fertilization and Pesticides on Alien and Native Plants

Abstract:Plastic mulches, fertilizers and pesticides have been extensively employed in agriculture to increase crop yields, though it has also led to the inadvertent accumulation of them over time. These accumulations have the potential to disrupt the soil ecological process and subsequently impact the plant community composition. Alien plants always benefit from environmental variability, thus whether the accumulation of fertilizer, plastic, and pesticide in soil promotes the dominance of alien plants in an invaded community. Here, five aliens and co-occurring natives were selected as study materials, and a full factorial experiment was conducted to answer this question. Our study found that microplastics promote the biomass production of native plants at higher nutrient availability while having marginal influence on growth of alien plants. Alien plants exhibited a lower root mass fraction (RMF) with increased nutrient availability and a higher specific leaf area (SLA) in response to the addition of nutrients and microplastics. Pesticide residues in the soil also significantly decreased the root mass fraction of three species, but there was no significant difference between the effects on alien and native species. Overall, our results revealed that alien species adjusted their functional traits more quickly, but native species gained more growth advantages in response to fertilization and microplastics.

Abstract:Native plant communities can be invaded by different numbers of alien plant species or by the same number of alien plant species with different levels of evenness. However, little is known about how alien invasive plant species richness and evenness affect soil microbial communities. We constructed native herbaceous plant communities invaded by exotic plants with different richness (1, 2, 4 and 8 species) and evenness (high and low) and analyzed soil physico-chemical properties and the diversity and composition of soil fungal and bacterial communities by high-throughput Illumina sequencing. Overall, the species richness and evenness of invasive plants had no significant effect on bacterial and fungal alpha diversity (OTUs, Shannon, Simpson, Chao1 and ACE) or the soil physico-chemical properties. However, invasive species richness had a significant impact on the relative abundance of the most dominant fungi, Ascomycota and Bipolaris, and the dominant bacteria, Actinobacteriota, which increased with increasing invasive species richness. The relative abundance of the dominant microbial groups was significantly correlated with the relative abundance of some specific invasive plants in the community. This study sheds new light on the effects of plant co-invasion on soil microbial communities, which may help us understand the underlying mechanisms of multiple alien plant invasion processes from the perspective of soil microorganisms.

Abstract:Global environmental changes can create novel habitats, promoting the growth of alien plants that often exhibit broad environmental tolerance and high phenotypic plasticity. However, the mechanisms underlying these growth promotory effects are unknown at present. Here, we conducted a phylogenetically controlled meta-analysis using data from 111 published studies encompassing the responses of 129 alien plants to global warming, increased precipitation, N deposition, and CO2 enrichment. We compared the differences in the responses of alien plants to the four global environmental change factors across six categories of functional traits between woody and non-woody life forms as well as C3 and C4 photosynthetic pathways. Our results showed that all four global change factors promote alien plant growth. Warming had a more positive effect on C4 than C3 plants. Although the effects of the four factors on the functional traits of alien plants were variable, plant growth was mainly promoted via an increase in growth rate and size. Our data suggest that potential future global environmental changes could further facilitate alien plant growth.
The ecological effects of biological invasions on birds

Abstract:Biological invasion is recognized as one of the greatest threats to the global biodiversity because invasive exotic species not only alter the local environments but also have serious ecological effects on native species. Birds are positioned at high trophic level within the food web in the ecosystem, and thus any changes within the system can affect the birds in one way or another. The ecological effects of different exotic taxa like mammals, birds, invertebrates and plants on native birds are reviewed in this paper. In summary, the ex-otic species can affect native bird species in four main ways, 1) predation of birds or eggs by the exotic mammals; 2) competition for habitats and foods with exotic birds, and loss of genetic diversity by hybridiza-tion with the closely-related exotic species; 3) direct and indirect alterations of native habitats and food re-sources, and predation by the exotic invertebrates; and 4) loss and fragmentation of habitats for native birds through altering species composition and structure of native plant communities by exotic plants. The un-solved questions and future research directions in this field are also addressed.

Abstract:The present study explored the nurse effects of two exotic plantations, Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Pinus thunbergii Parl. on the understory invader, Phytolacca americana L. in Mount Lao of North China. We found that the R. pseudoacacia stand nursed the invasion of P. americana since the understory invader performed better underneath the R. pseudoacacia stand. We intend to explain the nurse effect using ecological factors and found that the understory irradiance, soil fertility, and microbial pattern likely influenced the performance of P. americana. Forest plantations most likely promote exotic plant invasion. Using an in situ monitoring method, this study investigated the traits correlated with growth and reproduction of an understory invader, Phytolacca americana L., and ecological factors including understory irradiance, soil stoichiometry and microbial patterns associated with these traits in different exotic plantations of Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Pinus thunbergii Parl. at Mount Lao, Qingdao, China. We found that the traits of P. americana underneath the R. pseudoacacia stand might be situated at the fast side of the trait economic spectrum. The R. pseudoacacia stand appeared to "nurse" P. americana. Furthermore, we intended to explain the nurse effects of R. pseudoacacia stands by examining their ecological factors. First, the R. pseudoacacia stand created understory light attenuation, which matched the sciophilous feature of P. americana. Second, the soil beneath the R. pseudoacacia stand might benefit P. americana more since the soil has greater resource availability. Third, a higher microbial diversity was found in the soil derived from P. americana underneath the R. pseudoacacia stand. A greater abundance of plant pathogens was detected in the soil derived from P. americana in the R. pseudoacacia stand, while more abundant mycorrhizal fungi were detected in the P. thunbergii stand. We speculate that plant pathogens can defend P. americana from aggression from other understory competitors. The mycorrhizal fungi in the P. thunbergii stand might benefit P. americana while simultaneously benefiting other understory plants. Intensive competition from other plants might interfere with P. americana. The potential relationships between plant performance and ecological factors may explain the invasion mechanism of P. americana. The present study provides a novel insight on the facilitative effects of exotic tree plantation on an exotic herb through the modification of soil biota, with implications for the biocontrol of invasive species and forest management and conservation.

Abstract:<p>Despite our growing understanding of the impacts of invasive plants on ecosystem structure and function, important gaps remain, including whether native and exotic species respond differently to plant invasion. This would elucidate basic ecological interactions and inform management. We performed a meta‐analytic review of the effects of invasive plants on native and exotic resident animals. We found that invasive plants reduced the abundance of native, but not exotic, animals. This varied by animal phyla, with invasive plants reducing the abundance of native annelids and chordates, but not mollusks or arthropods. We found dissimilar impacts among "wet" and "dry" ecosystems, but not among animal trophic levels. Additionally, the impact of invasive plants increased over time, but this did not vary with animal nativity. Our review found that no studies considered resident nativity differences, and most did not identify animals to species. We call for more rigorous studies of invaded community impacts across taxa, and most importantly, explicit consideration of resident biogeographic origin. We provide an important first insight into how native and exotic species respond differently to invasion, the consequences of which may facilitate cascading trophic disruptions further exacerbating global change consequences to ecosystem structure and function.</p>

Abstract:Nutrient‐poor and natural enemies might promote the invasive success of alien species in native community, whereas nutrient addition and enemy suppression can better enhance the resistance of native plant communities to invasion. The invasion of alien plant species threatens the composition and diversity of native communities. However, the invasiveness of alien plants and the resilience of native communities are dependent on the interactions between biotic and abiotic factors, such as natural enemies and nutrient availability. In our study, we simulated the invasion of nine invasive plant species into native plant communities using two levels of nutrient availability and suppression of natural enemies. We evaluated the effect of biotic and abiotic factors on the response of alien target species and the resistance of native communities to invasion. The results showed that the presence of enemies (enemy release) increased the biomass proportion of alien plants while decreasing that of native communities in the absence of nutrient addition. Furthermore, we also found that the negative effect of enemy suppression on the evenness of the native community and the root‐to‐shoot ratio of alien target species was greatest under nutrient addition. Therefore, nutrient‐poor and natural enemies might promote the invasive success of alien species in native communities, whereas nutrient addition and enemy suppression can better enhance the resistance of native plant communities to invasion.
