Abstract:Classifies the municipal sewage as crude sewage, primary sewage and secondary sewage from the aspect of heat energy exploitation.Analyses the application characteristics and prospects,and states that the crude sewage will be the main source of heat energy usage in the future.Clarifies the concepts such as the sewage heat energy utilization,sewage-like cold/heat sources,sewage source heat pump,sewage source heat pump system(SSHPS),and points out their categorical relationship and status.Classifies the SSHPS as direct systems and indirect systems,compares their merits and faults,and indicates that the direct system has huge space to be developed.Presents two realizable forms for this system.

Abstract:Heat pump technology can extract low-level heat energy from urban sewage to heat or cool buildings, which can alleviate the two major problems of energy shortage and environmental pollution to a certain extent. This paper introduces the principle of wastewater source heat pump technology and summarizes the current common system forms and their key core technologies. The proposed special heat transfer technology for sewage can effectively solve the problem of blockage and corrosion in the process of sewage heat transfer. Taking the system of an office building in Qingdao as an example, the system design parameter is introduced in detail. The operation monitoring of the heating and air conditioning seasons of this project was completed through a data collection system, and various performance parameters of the system were studied and analyzed. The data was obtained using measured data from one year of system operation. The testing results show that the sewage temperature of the heat pump system in winter is approx. 13.5 °C, the hot water supply temperature is approx. 50 °C, the average COP of the unit is 3.95, and the average COP of the system is 2.96. The calculation results show that the heating energy consumption of the heat pump unit is only 50.81% of that of a traditional heating mode coal-fired boiler and 57.57% of that of an air source heat pump system. In summer, the sewage temperature is approx. 22 °C, the cold-water supply temperature is approx. 5.5 °C, the average COP of the unit is 4.45, and the average COP of the system is 3.25. The cooling energy consumption of the heat pump system is 79.39% of the energy consumption of the traditional chiller and 61.56% of the cooling energy consumption of the air source heat pump system. This shows that the sewage source heat pump system has a remarkable energy-saving effect.

Abstract:The sewage plant secondary effluent is full of low cold and heat energy, drawing cold and heat energy by direct sewage source heat pump and using it can provide heating in winter and cooling in summer. This paper introduced technical solutions of the direct sewage source heat pump system, besides, it gave the evaluating method of sewage effluent cold and heat energy ¨C the hourly analysis method, taking a sewage plant in Qingdao as an example and comparing it with the common engineering assessment method, the results show that this method has more engineering practicability.

Abstract:Points out that a plenty of freezing heat exist in urban sewage and surface waters close to the freezing point in winter. Studies the heat pump systems exploiting the freezing heat. Calculation results show that by the heat pump technology, the freezing heat can be used economically and practicably, and therefore be taken as a low temperature heating source for buildings.

Abstract:The extremely poor sewage quality could make the sewage heat utilization difficult. The paper introduces the content and distribution property of the sewage dirt. For the dirt properties and project experience, it proposes the two basic points of the anti-blocking technique in sewage source heat pump system: filtering surface continuous regeneration and dirt continuous reduction and the request for filtering pore size parameters. It also describes the principle of filtering surface hydraulic continuous regenerative technique and establishes its mathematical model and design method of the device. The calculation and application result indicates that filtering surface hydraulic continuous regenerative technique can guarantee the filtering effect and operation flow stable.

Abstract:The sewage flow rate of the urban drainage system is relatively large and generally stable, its sewage temperature range varies relatively lightly and maintains 10 degrees C in winter. The sewage in the drainage system can be the low grade thermal source for building heating and cooling. Sewage source heat pump technology can efficiently extract or discharge the amount of heat from the sewage in the drainage system for building heating or cooling. The field test of the actual operation thermal performance of the sewage source heat pump were investigated. The results show that: compared with the original system, direct heat exchange type sewage source heat pump system can save 55% of the primary energy consumption, reduce the annual operating cost by 15%. This method not only saves energy, but also can reduce the pollutant emission, and environmental benefits are gained.

Abstract:Sewage can be a low temperature heat energy source in urban area due to large heat capacity. In this paper, three kinds of applications of sewage-source heat pump in the process of sewage treatment are introduced. And a new reuse plan using disposed sewage as a heat source to heat raw sewage is presented to solve the problem that sewage temperature is low in sewage biologic treatment in cold region. Then according to the status of one medicine factory in Harbin, China, its schematic and characteristic are introduced. This paper reports the development of the heat pump system model. And with the model developed, system performances under an actual condition are simulated. The results show that the novel system is feasible to be utilized in sewage treatment in cold climate for its energy-saving and high efficient characteristic.

A Field Study of a Wastewater Source Heat Pump for Domestic Hot Water Heating

Abstract:An experimental heat pump utilizing wastewater discharged from the common bathroom in a SPA center as a heat source was built. In this article, the field measured operating performance of the wastewater source heat pump is reported. An analysis based on the collected field data under various operating conditions is included. It was shown that the temperature of wastewater greatly affected the evaporating temperature and the coefficient of performance of the wastewater source heat pump. Circulating wastewater from the bottom to the top of the wastewater storage tank could weaken even out the vertical wastewater temperature distribution inside the wastewater storage tank and improve the coefficient of performance and compressor suction pressure of the wastewater source heat pump accordingly. The daily averaged coefficient of performance of the wastewater source heat pump was monitored for over an entire month. It was shown that the measured coefficient of performance gradually reduced, suggesting the need for regular cleaning of the heat exchangers used in a wastewater source heat pump system. In addition, the recorded maximum transporting capacity of the wastewater pipe reduced by 16.9% over the 1 month operation and by 20.1% after ∼5 months due to the bio-fouling build-up. Finally, an analysis comparing the economics of operating a wastewater source heat pump system with that of operating conventional water heating systems is presented. Practical application: The use of heat pump to recover heat from wastewater is significant to energy conservation and environmental protection. A number of researches and projects on wastewater source heat pumps using urban sewage or treated sewage as a heat source have been carried out. However, field measured results on a heat pump, which recovered heat from waste bath water, was not previously reported. As the quality of waste bath water was different from that of sewage in terms of temperature, amount, and the degree of cleanliness, the experiences on designing and operating urban sewage source heat pumps previously obtained could not be used as a full reference for designing a waste bath water source heat pump. In this article, field experiment work of designing and operating a heat pump which used waste bath water as a heat source for hot water heating is presented, and the results can be used as a key reference for designing and operating waste bath water source heat pump systems in the future.

Abstract:Sewage source heat pump was a promising technology in energy saving. To solve the fouling accumulation on sewage heat exchangers, a novel sewage-resource-based system with sewage tower equipped with guide plates was proposed to realize heat recovery and water purification. Circulating air extracted heat from sewage in the core component of sewage tower through evaporating some of the sewage, and released heat and formed condensate on evaporator surface of heat pump. Results indicated that the heat transfer rate in condenser improved from 2.629 kW to 4.876 kW and the coefficient of performance of heat pump unit (COPu) promoted from 3.02 to 5.01 with sewage temperature increased from 9.44 degrees C to 31.41 degrees C. COPu and the coefficient of performance of system (COPs) initially increased sharply and then decreased slightly with increase of the volume flow ratio of air to sewage in the sewage tower, and the turning point occurred near the volume flow ratio of air to sewage of 359:1. In addition, compared with sewage tower with baffle structure, the novel sewage heat pump system with guide plates had greater heat transfer rate of 5.71 kW at 1000 m(3)/h and lower air-side pressure drop in sewage tower. Meanwhile, ammonia-nitrogen concentration in the condensate was 14.72 mg/L which was 63.64% lower than that in the original sewage, indicating the water quality of condensate satisfied the requirements for urban greening and construction articulated in the water quality standard.

Abstract:Using the urban wastewater as a cool and heat source is a new technology, of which the key problems are choosing the system and determining the operating parameters. Several system forms, that have been used or discussed are introduced, and the advantages and disadvantages of the pouring water system, shell-tube system, and immersing system are analyzed. Based on this, a new system form is given. The results show that the heat-exchanging coefficient directly used of shell-tube system is about 520 W/( m2·℃) ,and the heat flux is about 3900 W/m2. So the shell-tube system has the best effect of heat exchanging. The design parameters and operating effect through actual engineering are introduced, and the references for studying or using urban wastewater as cool and heat source are provided.
