Abstract:L-carnitine,with the basic biological function of transferring the long-chain fatty acid into the mitochondria, has satisfactory effect on the growth and the improvement in the meat quality. In recent years,it has been found that L-carnitine can improve reproductive performance of pregnant and lactating sows. Most studies show that it can improve the sow's body condition and its breeding potential, promote the growth of litters and increase the birth weight and the weaning weight of piglets. The improvement of the sow's body condition may be owing to the alteration of the fat and the protein metabolism. The higher birth weight of piglets may be owing to the effects that carnitine influences the insulin-like growth factor-axis in sows and leads to greater placenta, which in turn improves intra-uterine nutrition, and stimulates oxidation of glucose in the fetuses. The higher weaning weight may be due to an improved suckling behavior of piglets and the increased sow's milk production.
