Abstract:Understanding the basic mechanism of reading is the foundation for studying the pathogenesis of alexia and its rehabilitation care. Functional magnetic resonance imaging is one of imaging methods that can display the neurological activities in brain in vivo. It has been used in the studies of linguistics in recent years, particularly in the mechanisms of reading and processing. The article reviews the lateralization of Chinese single word processing and whether or not the specific brain region for cognitive processing of Chinese characters exists.

Abstract:In recent years, much fMRI research on sentence processing has been done, which primarily aimed to explore the neural bases of semantic process and syntactic process in sentence level and the relation. In this article, at first, the author analyzed and compared the research paradigms so as to sum up the common thinking and paradigms. Secondly, we discussed the neural mechanism of semantic and syntactic processes and proposed the commonness and specialty of semantic and syntactic property in cognitive and neural mechanism. Finally, regarding the diversity of languages and the factors effecting sentence processes, further research was suggested on this issue.

Abstract:This study has identified the active cerebral areas of normal Chinese that are associated with Chinese semantic processing using functional brain imaging. According to the traditional cognitive theory, semantic processing is not particularly associated with or affected by input modality. The functional brain imaging experiments were conducted to identify the common active areas of two modalities when subjects perform Chinese semantic tasks through reading and listening respectively. The result has shown that the common active areas include left inferior frontal gyrus (BA 44/45), left posterior inferior temporal gyrus (BA37); the joint area of inferior parietal lobules (BA40) and superior temporal gyrus, the ventral occipital areas and cerebella of both hemispheres. It gives important clue to further discerning the roles of different cerebral areas in Chinese semantic processing.

Abstract:Sentence comprehension is a much studied topic in modern cognitive psychology. It is very important to understand the psycholinguistic mechanisms underlying sentence comprehension in Chinese, a language without inflections. Because the lexical information of verb form a “Main Frame” of a sentence, more recent English studies are concerned more with the immediate effect of verb information in sentence comprehension, but such study in Chinese is scarce. Many English studies found that verb information such as verb selectional restrictions, argument structures, etc. emit an immediate effect on certain response tasks while reading or listening to sentences. These studies led to setting up the Lexical Driven Model of sentence comprehension. In the present study, the relationship of Chinese transitive verbs and the nouns／adjectives just following verbs was manipulated to form continuity／uncontinuity sentences, in order to study the immediate effect of Chinese verb lexical information, such as selectional restrictions, during the process of Chinese sentence comprehension. Cross-modal repetition priming lexical decision paradigm and eye tracking technology were used in two experiments. In the first experiment, a significant longer response time to target noun was found due to the mismatch of verb and noun. For verb-adjective sentences, different continuity also led to significant different response time to target adjectives. In the second experiment, obviously continuity effect was found in both noun and adjective cases. All the results showed that lexical information such as verb selectional restrictions attend Chinese sentence processing as soon as activated and accessed, instead of using category information only at the very beginning, thus supporting the Lexical Driven Model. The present study proved that the integration of Chinese is carried out during reading or listening in incremental fashion. When difficulties or exceptions are encountered, all sorts of available information including lexical information were used to make a transient decision without disrupting Chinese sentence processing. The present study also showed that the modality of immediate effect that Chinese verb information issue is influenced to some extend by the sentence presentation method and experiment task.

Abstract:The relative evidences from behavioral studies and electrophysiological studies have proved that the memory mechanism plays an important role in language comprehension.On one hand,working memory provides the operable platform for language comprehension,and the limited storage is the cause of comprehension strategies.On the other hand,long-term memory offers necessary backup-support for language comprehension.Based on the discussion upon the relationship between language comprehension and the memory mechanism,the paper retrospectively analyzes the effect mechanism of memory and the nature of the working memory system,summarizes the relative theories and the experimental evidences.In the end,the directions for future researches are put forward.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed a rapid progress in brain and bilingual research. Processing hypothesis is now gradually taking the place of Storage hypothesis in explaining the difference between neurobiological process of L1 and that of L2. Increasing emphasis has been put on the role of prefrontal in bilingual processing. And it has been found to play an important role in phonetic analysis, central executive function and elimination of interference during bilingual processing. New findings are discoverded on the influence of second language learning time, second language proficiency, and language type on the relationship between brain and bilingual. There are, however, still a lot of important issues worth further research in this field. We advocate, making full use of plentiful resource in China, that reseach on the brain mechanism of Chinese-English bilingual processing be strengthened.

Abstract:As one of the most widely used languages in the world, Chinese language is distinct from most western languages in many properties, thus providing a unique opportunity for understanding the brain basis of human language and cognition. In recent years, non-invasive neuroimaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) blaze a new trail to comprehensively study specific neural correlates of Chinese language processing and Chinese speakers. We reviewed the application of functional MRI (fMRI) in such studies and some essential findings on brain systems in processing Chinese. Specifically, for example, the application of task fMRI and resting -state fMRI in observing the process of reading and writing the logographic characters and producing or listening to the tonal speech. Elementary cognitive neuroscience and several potential research directions around brain and Chinese language were discussed, which may be informative for future research. (c) 2022 The Authors. Abstract:Event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (ER-fMRI) was adopted to examine brain activation of syntactic processing in reading logographic Chinese. While fMRI data were obtained, 15 readers of Chinese read individually presented sentences and performed semantic congruency judgments on three kinds of sentences: Congruous sentences (CON), sentences with a semantic violation (SEM), and sentences with both semantic and syntactic violations (SEM+SYN). The two types of incongruous sentences were matched in the degree of semantic plausibility. Three brain regions were identified showing significantly different levels of percent signal change across the three conditions, including BA44 in the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and both BA9 and BA10/46 in the left middle frontal gyrus (MFG). Furthermore, the mean percent signal change in the left BA44 observed in the SEM+SYN condition was significantly stronger than that in either the SEM or the CON condition, while the latter two conditions were at a similar level, implying an important role of this area in Chinese syntactic processing. These results, in conjunction with those found in alphabetic scripts, suggest that there are some common neural substrates underlie syntactic processing across distinctive writing systems such as the logographic Chinese and the alphabetic English.

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the brain areas activated by Chinese writing and English writing in the healthy Chinese volunteers with the functional magnetic resonance imaging(FMRI) technique. METHODS:Nine healthy volunteers were instructed to undertake both characters writing and pseudo-writing of English and Chinese during FMRI scanning. The brain regions activated by Chinese writing or English writing tasks were recorded and compared. RESULTS:The brain areas activated by Chinese writing included bilateral motor cortex,bilateral superior parietal lobule,bilateral inferior parietal lobule,left postcentral gyrus,and left putamen. The brain areas activated by English writing included bilateral motor cortex,bilateral superior parietal lobule,left postcentral gyrus,and left putamen. CONCLUSION:Both cortex and subcortical structures are activated in Chinese and English writing demonstrated by FMRI technique. More brain processing is required to take part in Chinese writing compared to English writing. The marginal division(MrD) of the striatum is probably one of subcortical areas related to writing.
Design of Simulus for Chinese Character Recognition and Its Application in fMRI Study

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the validity of the stimuli about Chinese character forms in the functional localization of cerebral areas that response to Chinese characters recognition;to locate these cerebral areas and make a preliminary quantitative analysis on their properties.Methods:Ten healthy right-handed Chinese University Students (six males and four females ) partici- pated in the study.All participants underwent an ophthalmological examination and no abnormality was found in vision.Informed consent was obtained prior to the fMRI experiment.Block design was used in this study.The trial consisted of 6 blocks and each block lasted 32 s.There were 16 characters during every stimulus time,and every character was visually presented for 1s.The stimulation words were grouped into three types:true words,pseudo-words,and no-words.During the stimulation time,the sub- jects were asked to maintain fixate on the center of the screen and identify which type of the three the Chinese characters belong to. The data were analyzed by AFNI to generate brain activation maps.Results:The fMRI experiment indicated that the stimuli of Chinese true word activated left super and middle frontal gyrus,inferior frontal gyrus (Broca's area),left precentral gyrus(BA6), left superior parietal lobule and inferior parietal lobule,and bilateral occipital gyrus as well as the precuneus,The left fusiform gyrus (BA37),right inferior frontal gyrus,bilateral superior and inferior temporal gyrus,and bilateral cingulated gyrus were also notably activated.It was showed that the activation volume in left hemisphere of Chinese true-word was larger than that in the right hemisphere.Conclusions:The findings in single character Chinese words processing associated with orthography showed that the experimental stimulus can be used to locate the cerebral areas that response to Chinese characters recognition.The experimental de- sign combining with fMRI is a feasible and non-invasive imaging method for studying language processing in human brain.The dominant hemisphere of processing languages is in the left.This experimental pattern is expected to be an effective method that can be carried on the brain functional examination for language disorder patients,and then provides more information for the clinical treatment and evaluation of prognosis.

Abstract:Neural oscillations subserve a broad range of speech processing and language comprehension functions. Using an electroencephalogram (EEG), we investigated the frequency-specific directed interactions between whole-brain regions while the participants processed Chinese sentences using different modality stimuli (i.e., auditory, visual, and audio-visual). The results indicate that low-frequency responses correspond to the process of information flow aggregation in primary sensory cortices in different modalities. Information flow dominated by high-frequency responses exhibited characteristics of bottom-up flow from left posterior temporal to left frontal regions. The network pattern of top-down information flowing out of the left frontal lobe was presented by the joint dominance of low- and high-frequency rhythms. Overall, our results suggest that the brain may be modality-independent when processing higher-order language information.

Abstract:Although there are many eye-movement studies focusing on natural sentence reading and functional magnetic resonance imaging research on reading with serial visual presentation paradigms, there is a scarcity of investigations into the neural mechanism of natural sentence reading. The present study recruited 33 adults to read unspaced and spaced Chinese sentences with the eye tracking and functional magnetic resonance imaging data recorded simultaneously. By using fixation-related functional magnetic resonance imaging analysis, this study showed that natural reading of Chinese sentences produced activations in ventral visual, dorsal attention, and semantic brain regions, which were modulated by the properties of words such as word length and word frequency. The multivoxel pattern analysis showed that the activity pattern in the left middle temporal gyrus could significantly predict the visual layout categories (i.e. unspaced vs. spaced conditions). Dynamic causal modeling analysis showed that there were bidirectional brain connections between the left middle temporal gyrus and the left inferior occipital cortex in the unspaced Chinese sentence reading but not in the spaced reading. These results provide a neural mechanism for the natural reading of Chinese sentences from the perspective of word segmentation.

Abstract:Objective To explore the brain mechanism of prosody processing with functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI).Methods In the current study,thirteen right-handed Chinese healthy volunteers(21~27years)were performed to prosody tasks.The experimental materials were chosen similar pattern of pitch changes.fMRI data were acquired,then processed and functional areas of brain were localized in AFNI.Results fMRI demonstrated the activation of auditory regions.In addition,some brain regions of bilateral hemisphere were also shown activations.These brain regions included bilateral superior temporal gyrus,right inferior frontal gyrus,supplementary motor area,and premotor areas.Conclusion The superior temporal gyrus plays an important role in prosodic processing and fMRI is useful for understanding the cerebral mechanism.

Abstract:Abstract Within only a few decades, the field of cognitive science has progressed from the mind-as-a-computer metaphor to the integration of mind, brain, behaviour, and culture at multiple levels of analysis and with multiple, convergent tools and methodologies. In particular, the interface between cognitive science and neuroscience has provided fertile ground for transformative research and revolutionary thinking, yielding perspectives that allow for fundamental scientific discoveries and rapid paradigm shifts. This article explores that the study of language, a unique human capacity, has played an important role in this scientific movement. A large body of knowledge has accumulated on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying language representation and language acquisition. This article focuses on the computational mechanisms and neural signatures based on the recent cross-linguistic computational and neural studies which examine the acquisition, representation, and processing of spoken and written Chinese in the context of both native speakers and second-language learners.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The brain mechanism of semantic processing is one of the focus problems in cognitive neuroscience.With the research technologies plentiful and diversified, the brain mechanism of semantic processing is gradually distinct.However, at present, the related researches on Chinese semantic processing are not enough. The brain mechanism of semantic processing by Chinese language obstacle should be studied more deeply.OBJECTIVE: To further identify the neuropsychological significance of clinical diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation by concluding the study fruits on the brain mechanism of semantic processing by native Chinese speaker with dysphonia and analyze the relationship between the related brain mechanism and the local brain system of semantic processes as well as brain anatomical parts.RETRIEVE STRATEGY: The retrieve staffs are the research personnel for this paper. The range of retrieve time focuses since 1984. A computer-based online search was conducted in CNKI for literatures related to basic neuropsychology and its clinical application published between January 1994 and May 2006, in Elsevier for articles between January 1984 and May 2006, in Academic Source Premier and MEDLINE of EBSCOhost for studies between January 1984 and May 2006 with the key words of "semantic processing", and the language was limited to English. Meanwhile, relevant data were searched manually. The number of total retrieved articles was 264, among which 43 enrolled studies were in accordance with the inclusion criteria and excluded articles involving semantic processing or encephalic region but without their relationship. The unpublished articles were only used for references LITERATURE EVALUATION: The literatures are selected from related works, collected analyses, reports from single case or research. Evaluated persons are related research staffs.DATA SYNTHESIS: Processing of Chinese semantic relied primarily on the left superior temporal region, middle temporal gyrus, the inferior gyrus of frontal regions as well as the left middle frontal gyrus, which make up a frontal-temporal network for semantic processing. Lexical-semantic processing is strongly correlated with activation in the posterior portion of left superior temporal region and the middle temporal gyrus, which appear to be responsible for storage and automatic of semantic processing. The anterior temporal region is related to integrate different semantic knowledge. More strategic processes and those that require specific memory resources may be represented in the inferior frontal cortex. In addition, the left middle frontal gyrus is special to Chinese semantic process, and some scholars infer the reason is the unique style of Chinese characters.CONCLUSION: At present, there are many methods to study neuropsychology, brain tissues and its functions, with which a great deal of neuropsychological disorder and mechanism of pathological changes in clinic can be studied and comprehended more distinctly, and all these are greatly helpful to the treatment and rehabilitation.

Abstract:Human language units are hierarchical, and reading acquisition involves integrating multisensory information (typically from auditory and visual modalities) to access meaning. However, it is unclear how the brain processes and integrates language information at different linguistic units (words, phrases, and sentences) provided simultaneously in auditory and visual modalities. To address the issue, we presented participants with sequences of short Chinese sentences through auditory, visual, or combined audio-visual modalities while electroencephalographic responses were recorded. With a frequency tagging approach, we analyzed the neural representations of basic linguistic units (i.e. characters/monosyllabic words) and higher-level linguistic structures (i.e. phrases and sentences) across the 3 modalities separately. We found that audio-visual integration occurs in all linguistic units, and the brain areas involved in the integration varied across different linguistic levels. In particular, the integration of sentences activated the local left prefrontal area. Therefore, we used continuous theta-burst stimulation to verify that the left prefrontal cortex plays a vital role in the audio-visual integration of sentence information. Our findings suggest the advantage of bimodal language comprehension at hierarchical stages in language-related information processing and provide evidence for the causal role of the left prefrontal regions in processing information of audio-visual sentences.

Abstract:This study sought to test the processing of three types of sentences in Chinese, as correct sentences, semantic violation sentences, and sentences containing semantic and syntactic violations, based on the following sentence pattern: "subject (noun) + yi/gang/zheng + predicate (verb)". Event-related potentials on the scalp were recorded using 32-channel electroencephalography. Compared with correct sentences, target words elicited an early left anterior negativity (N400) and a later positivity (P600) over frontal, central and temporal sites in sentences involving semantic violations. In addition, when sentences contained both semantic and syntactic violations, the target words elicited a greater N400 and P600 distributed in posterior brain areas. These results indicate that Chinese sentence comprehension involves covert grammar processes.
