Abstract:The data-based method for estimating the depth of a moving source is demonstrated experimentally for an incoming autonomous underwater vehicle traveling toward a vertical line array (VLA) of receivers at constant speed/depth. The method assumes no information on the sound-speed and bottom profile. Performing a wavenumber analysis of a narrowband signal for each hydrophone, the energy of the (modal) spectral peaks as a function of the receiver depth is used to estimate the depth of the source, traveling within the depth span of the VLA. This paper reviews the theory, discusses practical implementation issues, and presents the data analysis results.
Sequential Filtering Applied to Multi-Beam Echo-Sounding

Abstract:A precise ocean bottom map is often desired for ocean surveying. To meet the demand, the multi-beam echo sounder (MBES) has been developed and commonly used. An MBES usually forms multiple receiving beams across-track first, then determines the bottom echo time for each beam, and finally calculates depth from echo time and direction. In this paper, a sequential filtering approach, exploiting ping to ping data correlation, is proposed, which is capable of realizing fast and accurate estimation and tracking of the seafloor depth. By the employment of this method, when the measurement Signal-Noise-Ratio (SNR) is below 35dB, the root mean square error (RMSE) of depth estimation is much lower than the conventional approach, and nearly reaches the posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound. The results demonstrate that the sequential filtering approach, applied to MBES measurements, could be a promising technique for seafloor topography estimation and tracking.
A Depth-Adaptive Waveform Decomposition Method For Airborne Lidar Bathymetry

Abstract:Airborne LiDAR bathymetry (ALB) has shown great potential in shallow water and coastal mapping. However, due to the variability of the waveforms, it is hard to detect the signals from the received waveforms with a single algorithm. This study proposed a depth-adaptive waveform decomposition method to fit the waveforms of different depths with different models. In the proposed method, waveforms are divided into two categories based on the water depth, labeled as "shallow water (SW)" and "deep water (DW)". An empirical waveform model (EW) based on the calibration waveform is constructed for SW waveform decomposition which is more suitable than classical models, and an exponential function with second-order polynomial model (EFSP) is proposed for DW waveform decomposition which performs better than the quadrilateral model. In solving the model's parameters, a trust region algorithm is introduced to improve the probability of convergence. The proposed method is tested on two field datasets and two simulated datasets to assess the accuracy of the water surface detected in the shallow water and water bottom detected in the deep water. The experimental results show that, compared with the traditional methods, the proposed method performs best, with a high signal detection rate (99.11% in shallow water and 74.64% in deep water), low RMSE (0.09 m for water surface and 0.11 m for water bottom) and wide bathymetric range (0.22 m to 40.49 m).

Abstract:Underwater acoustic propagation can lead to a depth-dependent detection performance of sonar systems. The 2020 South China Sea Experiment was conducted for an experimental demonstration of these characteristics by underwater gliders. Detection performance is analyzed using the acoustic data, and simulations with the environmental data collected from the experiment are performed to calculate the corresponding transmission loss and give a performance prediction as well. The two parts of results show rough consistency and confirm the acoustic depth-dependent detection performance characteristics.

Abstract:Detection of flaw echoes is an important task in ultrasonic testing.In order to eliminate the effects of noise and detect echoes correctly,a signal processing method based on the S-transformation (ST) and the time-frequency spectrum (TFS) spatial filtering was proposed.Based on the Gaussian echo model,the relationships between the time of arrival (TOA) together with the center frequency (CF) and ST TFS were discussed.The reasonableness of the method using the extremum of ST TFS amplitude matrix for TOA and CF extraction were illustrated.To detect the echoes,firstly the ST was performed on the original signal.Then the dual-threshold were determined by the Maximum Entropy Thresholding method adaptively,and the spatial filtering was performed on ST TFS for denoising.The TOA and CF could be extracted from the denoised region.Finally,the inverse ST was performed on the denoised TFS and the signal with clear flaw echoes were gained.Simulation results show that using ST and TFS spatial filtering can remove noise and detect echoes effectively.And the experimental results of bar specimen also show the effectiveness of the method in flaw detection.

Abstract:A model of ultrasonic flaw echo detection was built to depress the high scattering microstructure noise in the ultrasonic signal from aluminum alloy forge.A new wavelet thresholding function based Stein unbiased risk estimation method was set up to perform the adaptive denoising procedure.The discrete wavelet coefficients of different scale were calculated by using the new thresholding function,then a thresholds iterative process based on the minimum mean square error was implemented.The new estimated signal was rebuilt though wavelet inverse transform by using the calculated wavelet coefficients.The iterative process would be continued until the terminated condition was accessed.The processing results of the ultrasonic signals with flaw from aluminum alloy forge indicates that compared to the other denoising methods based on the standard hard thresholding and soft thresholding functions,the adaptive denoising method has better denoising performance on the microstructure noise and can enhance the flaw echo signal.
A Method for Estimating the Distance of Near-Ocean-Bottom Sources by Combining VLF Underwater Acoustic Field and Scholte Wave Field

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of passive detection of very-low-frequency (VLF) underwater sound sources, this paper proposes a method of estimating sound source distance based on combining underwater sound field and Scholte wave field. VLF sources near the ocean bottom generate the sound field in the water, then seismic waves are excited by the of near-field effect. The surface wave propagating along the ocean bottom interface is the Scholte wave. By deploying a hydroacoustic&seismic-wave joint detection system on the ocean bottom, the acoustic field and the Scholte wave field excited by the source can be collected. Due to the different physical properties of water acoustics and Scholte waves, the Scholte waves can be distinguished by analysing the polarization characteristics of the captured signals. Due to the different velocity between the underwater acoustics and Scholte waves, the propagation delays to the joint detection system are also different, and the delay difference can be obtained by the correlation method. Combined with the surrounding parameters, the distance of the target source can be determined. Theoretical analysis and finite element simulation experiments show that this method can estimate the position information of near-ocean-bottom VLF underwater sources in the ideal case.

Abstract:Data of sea-status obtained acoustically by underwater vehicle often have defects of imprecise class with incomplete elements. The class model of underwater-vehicle detected seastatus based on high-pass filter was established by analysing every possible error factor, but the frequency cut-off of the model is difficult to determine in practice for the instance of one acoustic observing point. Acoustic arrays are created on the vehicle, and Hilbert Transform is used to analyse the wave phases observed by each sensor, and then the model-estimated wave direction based on phase difference is presented. In addition, flume experiments were conducted to simulate the processes. The results show that the phase-difference method is effective in determining wave direction, as is helpful in making certain the frequency cut-off of the class model, and the experiments provide a theoretical base for estimating sea-status underwater.

Abstract:At present, due to inaccurate models of environmental noise and lack of prior knowledge. most tracking algorithms are non-iterative. Moreover, most underwater tracking algorithms do not consider the influence of sound velocity on ray trajectory. As a result, many algorithms are ineffective in a real underwater environment. In order to solve the above problems, we use measured data and consider the special underwater environment characteristics to build a sound propagation model. Through this model, time of flight (ToF), and traveling distance of sound can be calculated. Then, in order to combine the advantages of iterative and non-iterative algorithms, we propose an improved underwater tracking algorithm. A minimum residual localization algorithm based on particle swarm optimization. which is a non-iterative algorithm, is modified to adapt to the underwater environment. In the end, a data fitting strategy is adopted to convert the non-iterative algorithm into an iterative one without knowledge of environmental noise. Hence, the historical information can be used to improve the accuracy of the non-iterative algorithm significantly. Simulations show that our method possesses the merit of higher precision and broader adaptability in comparison with other techniques.

Abstract:A method for the source depth estimation and qualitative binary source depth discrimination is proposed, using the 0th order sound pressure, the 1st‐ and 2nd‐ order sound intensity. The numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can estimate the source depth approximately and discriminate between surface versus submerged sources. Lloyd's mirror effect is a spatial interference phenomenon that results from the coherent combination of direct and surface‐reflected propagation paths. The higher‐order vertical sound intensities of the interference sound field contain source depth information, and the relationship between these higher‐order sound intensities can be employed to estimate the source depth. A method for source depth estimation and qualitative binary source depth discrimination using the 0th‐order sound pressure, as well as the 1st‐ and 2nd‐order sound intensities, was proposed. The numerical simulation results confirmed the ability of the proposed method to approximate the source depth and discriminate between surface and submerged sources without requiring long‐term tracking or knowledge of the ocean environment.

Experimental Study on Depth Discrimination for A Moving Source with A Horizontal Array in Shallow Water

Abstract:Acoustic source depth discrimination is a robust way to obtain depth information when source depth cannot be estimated accurately. This paper makes use of the fact that the low-order modes which are excited by surface sources generally have low amplitudes in a downward refracting shallow water environment. The depth discrimination depends on the trapped energy ratio in mode space. The performance of the maximum a posteriori mode filter is compared with other mode filters. For a moving source, it has been verified that the broadband processing and time integral can improve the detection rate when the expected false alarm rate is 0.01. Finally, experimental results show that time integral for a moving source can effectively discriminate the source depth.

Abstract:With the development of ultra-wide coverage technology, multibeam echo-sounder (MBES) system has put forward higher requirements for localization accuracy and computational efficiency of ray tracing method. The classical equivalent sound speed profile (ESSP) method replaces the measured sound velocity profile (SVP) with a simple constant gradient SVP, reducing the computational workload of beam positioning. However, in deep-sea environment, the depth measurement error of this method rapidly increases from the central beam to the edge beam. By analyzing the positioning error of the ESSP method at edge beam, it is discovered that the positioning error increases monotonically with the incident angle, and the relationship between them could be expressed by polynomial function. Therefore, an error correction algorithm based on polynomial fitting is obtained. The simulation experiment conducted on an inclined seafloor shows that the proposed algorithm exhibits comparable efficiency to the original ESSP method, while significantly improving bathymetry accuracy by nearly eight times in the edge beam.

Iterative Error Removal for Time-of-Flight Depth Imaging

Abstract:Depth information plays an increasingly important role in computer vision tasks. As one of the most promising depth sensing techniques, Amplitude Modulated Continuous Wave (AMCW)-based indirect Time-of-Flight (ToF) has been widely used in recent years. Unfortunately, the depth acquired by ToF sensors is often corrupted by imaging noise, multi-path interference (MPI), and low intensity. Different methods have been proposed for tackling these issues. Nevertheless, they failed to exploit the characteristics of the ToF depth map to propose a targeted solution, and are unable to achieve various error removal. We present a new iterative method for removing various errors simultaneously through cascaded Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). A Synthetic Dataset is created using computer graphics, and a Real-World Dataset is developed via RGBD-based 3D reconstruction, both contain the raw measurement acquired by a certain ToF camera and corresponding dense ground truth depth. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed iterative method in removing various ToF depth errors, compared to state-of-the-art methods, on both the newly developed datasets and existing public datasets.

Abstract:A method to distinguish the surface source and underwater source based on two-dimensional Fourier transform of interference pattern in deep-water environment with an incomplete sound channel is presented in this paper. Considering the modal characteristics of incomplete channel, the normal mode can be divided into three categories: trapped mode, bottom interacting mode and surface interacting-bottom interacting mode. Then, the interference spectrum can be obtained by performing a two-dimensional Fourier transform on the interference pattern. Due to the correlation between the interference structure and the source depth, the types and positions of interference spectral peaks vary at different source depths. Based on this, subspaces can be defined for the interference spectrum, and then the energy ratio of the different modal interference groups in the subspaces can be calculated for source depth discrimination. In this method, the identification of source depth is regarded as a binary classification problem, where the decision threshold is calculated from simulation results under a given false alarm probability. The source depth discrimination can be achieved through comparing the energy ratio with the given decision threshold. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified using numerical simulations and experimental data.

Abstract:A vertical line array can be deployed in deep water below the critical depth, i.e., the depth where the sound speed equals the sound speed at the surface, to take advantage of the lower ambient noise level, relative to above the critical depth for target detection. The depth of a source can be estimated exploring the interference between the direct and reflected signals described by Lloyd’s mirror theory. Existing methods for source-depth estimation assume either a source transmitting a pulsed signal or a source traveling a straight line at a constant depth. For the latter, the source depth can be estimated after collecting observations over a sufficiently large domain of ranges. A method is proposed here that can estimate the source depth using a short snapshot of the random broad band signal, and can thus estimate the source depth semi-instantaneously, even as the source changes course and/or depth. An incoherent matched beam processing method is used matching the peak beam power measured from data as a function of frequency with a replica peak beam power spectrum for a hypothesized source depth. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using simulated data and validated with experimental data from the South China Sea.

Abstract:<p>In the near-field underwater detection of lidar, the low accuracy of time integration model leads to a lot of noise and a low signal to backscatter ratio during target signal extraction. Aiming at this problem, this paper divides the water into thickness units according to the scale time of the AD acquisition card, and establishes a near-field water echo model of lidar called distance layer summation model(DLSM). According to the underwater optical transmission theory, this paper establishes the formula for the time delay of the echo signal of the water with the system angle. The pulse width error of the calculated and measured results is 0.55ns. The experimental results after normalization show that compared with the time integration model, the pulse width percentage error of the model in this paper is reduced by 18.7 %, the root mean square error is reduced by 0.04, and the signal to backscatter ratio is increased by 8.74 dB. The simulation results of the model in this paper are more consistent with the measured water waveform, which can lay the foundation for the subsequent work of water backscatter suppression and target echo signal extraction.</p>

Abstract:Acoustic remote sensing with multibeam echo-sounder systems (MBESs) has been extensively used for coastal and ocean survey works. The imperfect integration of multibeam echo sounder and motion sensor can introduce integration errors, which manifest as high-frequency wobbles in swaths and hinder the accurate expression of high-resolution seabed topographic maps. To address this issue, a precise method is developed to calibrate these integration errors based on a simplified georeferenced model. First, an equivalent attitude coordinate (EAC) system is defined to represent mutual transformation between equivalent attitudes and the beam launch vector; then, with the help of equivalent attitudes, a simplified footprint georeferenced model is deduced that considers the effect of the parameterized integration errors (including time delay, motion scale, yaw misalignment, and lever arm errors); finally, in a selected flat region, integration errors are inverted by regressing the bathymetric data to the corresponding fitted plane via the differential evolution (DE) algorithm. The results indicate that the proposed method can effectively eliminate wobbles in multibeam bathymetries caused by single or multiple integration errors in both shallow- and deep-water areas. By comparing the data before and after calibration with the in situ measurements, the accuracy of the calibrated shallow- and deep-water data is controlled within approximately 0.15% and 0.06% of the water depth, respectively.

Anti-Interference Bottom Detection Method of Multibeam Echosounders Based on Deep Learning Models

Abstract:Multibeam echosounders, as the most commonly used bathymetric equipment, have been widely applied in acquiring seabed topography and underwater sonar images. However, when interference occurs in the water column, traditional bottom detection methods may fail, resulting in discontinuities in the bathymetry and distortion in the sonar images. To solve this problem, we propose an anti-interference bottom detection method based on deep learning models. First, the variation differences of backscatter strengths at different incidence angles and the failure conditions of traditional methods were analyzed. Second, the details of our deep learning models are explained. And these models were trained using samples in the specular reflection, scatter reflection, and high-incidence angle regions, respectively. Third, the bottom detection procedures of the along-track and across-track water column data using the trained models are provided. In the experiments, multibeam data with strong interferences in the water column were selected. The bottom detection results of the along-track water column data at incidence angles of 0°, 35°, and 60° and the across-track ping data validated the effectiveness of our method. By comparison, our method acquired the correct bottom position when the traditional methods had inaccurate or even no detection results. Our method can be used to supplement existing methods and effectively improve bathymetry robustness under interference conditions.

Abstract:Considering the large reconstruction error of ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and the loss of useful high-frequency signals, a complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) joint wavelet packet threshold processing method is proposed for processing ultrasonic non-destructive testing defect signals. The ultrasonic echo signal is decomposed using CEEMDAN to obtain a group of intrinsic mode functions (IMF). The noisy components are selected using the correlation coefficient method and the high-frequency noise components are processed using the wavelet packet threshold. After threshold processing, the IMF components and reserved IMF components are accumulated and reconstructed. Compared with the EEMD algorithm, the signal-to-noise ratio was increased by 48.03% and the root mean square error and total number of iterations were reduced by 38.77% and 33.34%, respectively. This method reduces the reconstruction error and iteration time and ensures the integrity of the signal.

Abstract:There are particular difficulties in making acoustic estimates of the abundance of demersal and semi-demersal fish. One possibility which exists in any survey situation is that the fish may move from the direct path of the vessel because of the noise it is radiating. However, the problems addressed here are primarily due to the physical characteristics of the transmitted acoustic pulse from the echo-sounder and its interaction with fish close to the seabed. This paper looks at the factors controlling the detection of these fish in terms of the acoustic sampling volumes near the bottom, the discrimination theoretically possible between fish and seabed echoes and the “depth anomaly”. The acoustic deadzone is defined and its volume is determined. Practical aspects of signal processing in this near seabed situation are then described, including seabed recognition and safeguarding fish signals from contamination by the bottom echo and from noise. Next, an echo-integrator deadzone comprising the acoustic deadzone, the backstep zone, and the partial integration zone (related to pulse length) is described and defined. Equations for calculating the effective volume or effective height of this deadzone are developed. Estimation errors due to the echo-integrator deadzone are investigated and equations derived for the necessary corrections. An example is shown of partial failure of the bottom recognition system and how the echo integrator result can be corrected to compensate.
