Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship of the injury of different white matter fiber tracts with working memory in the patients with diffuse axons injury (DAI) at recovery stage. Methods DTI was performed in 10 patients with DAI (5.3±12)days after the injury and 10 healthy subjects serving as control.Fractional anisotropy (FA) value of region of interest (ROI),which included uncinate fasciculus, corticospinal tract, corpus callosum and cingulate gyrus, was compared between DAI group and control group.Cognitive ability and working memory were determined 6 months after the injury in both the DAI and control groups. The relationship between the FA and cognitive test scores in patients with DAI were analyzed by Pearson Linear Correlation. Results A significant decrease in FA value was observed in ROIs (P <0.05),and working memory test scores were also significant decreased (P <0.05),but total cognitive ability was insignificantly lowered in the patients with DAI compared with control group (P <0.05).The FA values in the uncinate fasciculus and corticospinal tract were positively related with working memory tests scores (P <0.05),while the FA values in the corpus callosum and cingulate gyrus were insignificantly related with working memory test scores in the patients with DAI (P >0.05).Conclusion DTI early after the injury may be helpful to assessing the cognitive dysfunction in the patients with DAI at recovery stage.
