Plasmonics
Abstract:The plasmonic-based switch plays an important role in controlling terahertz waves and transferring them toward the desired paths. In this study, a graphene-based electro-optical switch has been designed to control surface plasmon polariton propagation in a plasmonic channel. A plasmonic channel is made of a SiO 2 layer sandwiched between a silicon ridge and a graphene monolayer. A thin film of gold is placed on the ridge to enhance the confinement of surface plasmon polaritons in the channel. By using the graphene chemical potentials of 0.1 eV and 0.5 eV, the transmission loss is exponentially changed, and OFF and ON cases for switching operation are realized. The area of the structure is as small as 0.05 μm 2 less than the previous works. The long coupling length of the switch helps to reduce the cross-talk, so more closing the waveguides is possible and leads to designing compact devices. This feature is highly required for optical circuits. The loss of the channel for the chemical potential of 0.5 eV equals 6.2 dB/μm which is negligible about the dimension of the device. Besides, the coupling length of 9.72 μm confirms the high performance of the designed switch. The compactness, low transmission loss, and long coupling length are the main features of the proposed plasmonic switch.
