Abstract:Light sensitive lamellar (Lα) phases have been generated in glycerol/water mixtures from blends of an inert ABA tri-block co-polymer (dimethylsiloxane-polyethylenoxide, (EO)15–(PDMS)15–(EO)15), and a photodestructible anionic surfactant C6PAS (sodium 4-hexylphenylazosulfonate). These Lα systems have been formulated in a 6/4 glycerol/water (v/v) mixed solvent. Rheology, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) have been used to characterize the change in phase behavior and structure after the incorporated C6PAS is selectively degraded by UV light incident on the Lα phases. The ABA co-polymer alone forms weakly structured lamellar mesophases, which are stabilized by thermal fluctuations and characterized by low shear moduli (Lα phase-A). Addition of C6PAS (10 mM) introduces charge stabilization, generating more ordered and stiffer Lα systems (Lα phase-B). After UV irradiation (Hg lamp) of the Lα-B phases, and subsequent degradation of the ionic C6PAS, the results of rheological and scattering studies are consistent with an irreversible change back to Lα phase-A type systems. These formulations display a novel transition between electrostatically- and thermally-stabilized lamellae, which may be controlled by incident UV light.
Photoresponsive Arylazopyrazole Surfactant/PDADMAC Mixtures: Reversible Control of Bulk and Interfacial Properties

Abstract:In many applications of polyelectrolyte/surfactant (P/S) mixtures, it is difficult to fine-tune them after mixing the components without changing the sample composition, e.g. pH or the ionic strength. Here we report on a new approach where we use photoswitchable surfactants to enable drastic changes in both the bulk and interfacial properties. Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) mixtures with three alkyl-arylazopyrazole butyl sulfonates (CnAAP) with -H, -butyl and -octyl tails are applied and E/Z photoisomerization of the surfactants is used to cause substantially different hydrophobic interactions between the surfactants and PDADMAC. This affects significantly the P/S binding and allows for tuning both the bulk and interfacial properties of PDADMAC/CnAAP mixtures through light irradiation. For that, we have fixed the surfactant concentrations at values where they exhibit pronounced surface tension changes upon E/Z photoisomerization with 365 nm UV light (Z) and 520 nm green (E) light and have varied the PDADMAC concentration. The electrophoretic mobility can be largely tuned by photoisomerisation of CnAAP surfactants and P/S aggregates, which can even exhibit a charge reversal from negative to positive values or vice versa. In addition, low colloidal stability at equimolar concentrations of PDADMAC with CnAAP surfactants in the E configuration lead to the formation of large aggregates in the bulk which can be redissolved by irradiation with UV light when the surfactant‘s alkyl chain is short enough (C0AAP). Vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) reveals changes at the interface similar to the bulk, where the charging state at air-water interfaces can be modified with light irradiation. Using SFG spectroscopy, we interrogated the O-H stretching modes of interfacial H2O and provide qualitative information on surface charging that is complemented by neutron reflectometry, from which we resolved the surface excess of PDADMAC and CnAAP at the air-water interface, independently.

Abstract:Modulation of membrane properties via photoswitchable lipids has attracted attention due to the unparalleled spatiotemporal resolution of their functional control. Beside lipids, detergents are another prominent class for selective membrane perturbations owing to their ease of handling and spontaneous insertion in lipid bilayers. Herein, we describe the synthesis and characterization of three classes of visible light‐sensitive surfactants with various azobenzene tail chain lengths. The photoswitchable detergents show water‐solubility and micellization as well as undergo reversible isomerization under blue‐/green light illumination. We demonstrate that the light‐induced structural change of azobenzene can lead to vesicle rupture, making them a tool for controlled cargo release from vehicles. Via spontaneous insertion into the plasma membrane of mammalian cells transiently transfected with MscL, we used the azobenzene‐derived detergents to optically activate the transmembrane mechanosensitive channel. This led to the rapid controlled uptake of membrane‐impermeable molecules. Since detergents are extensively used in biochemistry and biotechnology, we propose that the photoswitchable detergents will be useful tools for the spatiotemporal modulation of membrane properties. Additionally, our work provides a design strategy for new detergents in membrane (protein) research.

Photoinduced Reconfiguration of Complex Emulsions Using a Photoresponsive Surfactant

Abstract:Photoresponsive complex emulsions are prepared in a three-phase system consisting of two oils: hexane (H) and perfluorooctane (F). An aqueous solution of a mixed surfactant of fluorosurfactant, F(CF2) x(CH2CH2O) yH (Zonyl FS-300), and a synthesized light-responsive surfactant, 2-(4-(4-butylphenyl)diazenylphenoxy)ethyltrimethylammonium bromide (C4AZOC2TAB) was employed as the continuous phase. Complex emulsions with various geometries were prepared by one-step vortex mixing and a temperature-induced phase-separation method. It was noticed that the topology of the complex emulsion was highly dependent on the mass ratio of Zonyl FS-300/C4AZOC2TAB. Light microscopy images showed that phase inversion from an H/F/W- to an F/H/W-type double emulsion via a Janus emulsion was achieved by gradually increasing the mass ratio of C4AZOC2TAB/Zonyl FS-300. Upon UV/blue light irradiation, the topology of complex emulsions was turned to switch from an F/H/W double emulsion to a Janus emulsion to an entirely inverted H/F/W double emulsion. Dynamic interfacial tension measurements showed that UV irradiation of the interface between an aqueous trans-C4AZOC2TAB solution and hexane brings about an increase in the interfacial tension, suggesting the nature of photoinduced morphological changes in complex emulsions. The reconfiguration process of complex emulsions was illustrated by the Marangoni effect based on heterogeneity in the interfacial tension at the complex emulsion surface induced by controlling the molecular conversion of C4AZOC2TAB using light irradiation. Finally, we used the complex emulsions structure to form an on-off switch to start and shut off the evaporation of one volatile phase to achieve process monitoring. This could be used to initiate and quench a reaction, which offers a novel idea for achieving switchable and reversible reaction control in multiple-phase reactions.

Abstract:Physically mixing two dissimilar polymers often results in a macroscopically segregated blend with poor optical clarity and mechanical properties. Previously, we demonstrated that chain end functionalization of immiscible polymer blends with oppositely paired acid and base groups leads to an ionic supramolecular block copolymer with electrostatically stabilized microdomains that suppress macroscopic phase separation. In this work, a functionalized polydimethylsiloxane with a photochromic diarylethene (DAE) end-group (PDMS-ω-DAE) is blended with a sulfonic acid end-functionalized polystyrene (PS-ω-SO3H), forming an ionic supramolecular block copolymer with tunable morphology by light. When the DAE is irradiated with UV light, it triggers an isomerization from the ring-opened (DAE–O) to the ring-closed (DAE–C) form. The light-induced conformational change in the chain-end group chemistry substantially alters the ionic junctions, leading to a phase structure difference in the solid-state from hexagonally packed cylinders (HEX) to lamellae (LAM). After UV radiation, the more localized positive charge on DAE–C led to stronger ionic bonds between the two dissimilar blocks, while the repulsion between adjacent DAE–C groups increased. The stronger electrostatic repulsion along the interface resulted in increased interfacial area per polymer chain and thus induced such phase transition. The light-induced phase transition of this system demonstrates that the ionic interactions can be tuned on-demand to create different morphologies from a single polymer blend.

Abstract:In this study, photoisomerizable polyacrylate containing spiropyran moieties was synthesized. By taking advantage of the photoinduced structural transformations of the spiropyran moieties, photoinduced microscopic ordering and eventually macroscopic patterns were formed in the polymer films consisting of spiropyran-containing polyacrylate (SPPA) and tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB). The patterns thus obtained are composed of concentric rings, which alternatively consist of macroscopic convex ridges and concave valleys, with the former being amphormous phases and the latter being ordered mesomorphous ones. It was found that the open-ring protonated merocyanine (MC) form of the spiropyran moieties, which is triggered by UV illumination, was crucial to the formation of mesomorphous structure and macroscopic patterns for this polymer-surfactant system. It is possible that the interaction between the MC form and TOAB leads to the formation of the microscopic ordering and macroscopic pattern in the polymer-TOAB films. This photoinduced macroscopic patterning in solid polymer-surfactant system could offer a new way for modulating and/or fabricating ordered supramolecular structure in macroscopic dimension by using light as a trigger.
Photoinduced bidirectional mesophase transition in vesicles containing azobenzene amphiphiles

Abstract:The functionality and efficiency of proteins within a biological membrane are highly dependent on both the membrane lipid composition and the physiochemical properties of the solution. Lipid mesophases are directly influenced by changes in temperature, pH, water content or due to individual properties of single lipids such as photoswitchability. In this work, we were able to induce light- and temperature-driven mesophase transitions in a model membrane system containing a mixture of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine phospholipids and azobenzene amphiphiles. We observed reversible and reproducible transitions between the lamellar and Pn3m cubic phase after illuminating the sample for 5 min with light of 365 and 455 nm wavelengths, respectively, to switch between the cis and trans states of the azobenzene N=N double bond. These light-controlled mesophase transitions were found for mixed complexes with up to 20% content of the photosensitive molecule and at temperatures below the gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition temperature of 33°C. Our results demonstrate the potential to design bespoke model systems to study the response of membrane lipids and proteins upon changes in mesophase without altering the environment and thus provide a possible basis for drug delivery systems.

Abstract:Surfactants play a crucial role in applications such as oil-water separation, foam flotation, drug delivery, emulsion polymerization, and emulsifier recovery. Stimulus-responsive surfactants, as innovative smart materials, can reversibly control emulsion decomposition or phase transformation, facilitating emulsion circulation and component recovery. In this paper, two short-chain fluoroazobenzene photoresponsive surfactants ( FADC-2 and FADC-4 ) were synthesized. Three different reversible emulsion systems were constructed, leveraging the excellent chemical stability and rapid photoresponse of azobenzene and the trifluoromethyl group as a hydrophobic moiety. The results indicate that under different light exposures, the FADC-2 /n-hexane/water and FADC-4 /n-hexane/water emulsions exhibit reversible emulsification and demulsification cycles, while the FADC-4 /n-octanol/water emulsions show reversible phase transfer. These findings highlight the effectiveness of photoresponsive surfactants in controlled emulsion systems, offering promising applications in fields requiring precise emulsion manipulation and liquid-liquid phase transfer, at the same time advancing the development of environmentally friendly, practical, durable, and stimulus-responsive surfactants.

Endowing a Light-Inert Aqueous Surfactant Two-Phase System with Photoresponsiveness by Introducing a Trojan Horse.

Abstract:The ability to modulate the phase behavior of an aqueous surfactant two-phase (ASTP) system reversibly with light is of great importance in both fundamental and applied science. Thus far, most of the light-responsive ASTP systems are based on covalent modification of the component molecules. In this article, we, for the first time, achieve photoresponsiveness in a light-inert ASTP system by physically introducing a phototrigger with the aid of a Trojan horse. The ASTP system formed from sodium laurate (SL) and dodecyltributylammonium bromide (DBAB) does not show light responsiveness by physically mixing a light-responsive azobenzene compound, 2-(4-(phenyldiazenyl)phenoxy)acetate sodium (Azo). However, in the presence of the host-guest complex SL@β-CD formed from β-CD and sodium laurate (SL), the ASTP turns quickly into a homogeneous suspension under visible light, which recovers to the original ASTP state again under 365 nm UV irradiation. Because the SL@β-CD complex exists harmonically with the ASTP system, it can be viewed as a "Trojan horse" that becomes fatal only when the encapsulated SL is triggered to release. In the presence of the Trojan horse, the photoresponsiveness of the ASTP system can be manipulated reversibly by alternatively exerting UV and visible light. Using this strategy, we are able to collect trace amounts of oily components from water. The current strategy points out that it is possible to achieve light responsiveness in light-inert systems with a physical method, which may have profound impact on both the fundamental and applied science.
Photoresponsive block copolymer nanostructures through implementation of arylazopyrazoles

Abstract:Responsive nanomaterials that can undergo reversible changes in morphology are interesting for the development of functional materials that interact with and respond to their environment. Amphiphilic block copolymers are well known for their ability to create a wide range of supramolecular nanostructures in solution. Arylazopyrazoles (AAPs) are versatile molecular photoswitches, which change their configuration and hydrophobicity via irradiation with UV light (365 nm, Z isomer, less hydrophobic) and green light (520 nm, E isomer, more hydrophobic). In this work, photoswitchable block copolymers containing arylazopyrazole tetraethylene glycol methacrylate (AAPMA) and oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (OEGMA) forming amphiphilic POEGMA b PAAPMA with varying block lengths are prepared by RAFT polymerization. The photochemical properties of AAP persist in the polymers. Due to their amphiphilic structure, the polymers self-assemble into supramolecular morphologies in water. Remarkably, photoisomerization results in a reversible change in the self-assembly behavior. Specifically, spherical and cylindrical micelles are observed for POEGMA33-b-PAAPMA47 when illuminated under green or UV light during assembly. Furthermore, the morphology of assembled structures can be reversibly switched by subsequent irradiation with UV and green light.

Abstract:In this study, the effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) polymer on lyotropic lamellar phases obtained using different types of surfactants, anionic and cationic, was compared. Three different methods were used to make these comparisons. The polarized microscope (POM) method was used to observe and compare morphological changes. It was observed that the texture structures of the lyotropic lamellar phases obtained by using anionic and cationic surfactants were different from each other. Structural changes were investigated by the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) method. As the polymer concentration added to the lyotropic lamellar phase(s) increased, it was determined that the structural changes of the anionic and cationic samples were different from each other. While the polymer added to the anionic surfactant compresses the structure, the polymer added to the cationic surfactant does not significantly alter the structural parameters. The interactions of surfactant-polymer molecules with each other and their packaging were accordingly investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). How the polymer was added to the lyotropic lamellar phase and how the surfactant interacted with the chain and head groups was determined by examining the frequency shifts of the methylene chains and head groups. These frequency shifts provide information about trans-gauche transformations. The results indicate that the polymer added to both groups leads to a transition towards a gauche conformation. Both polymers and lyotropic lamellar phases have wide biological and technological uses. For this reason, their use together, that is, the interactions of polymer doped-lamellar phases, is interesting and should be understood.

Abstract:The structure of a solution of poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(benzyl methacrylate-stat-(4-phenylazophenyl methacrylate)) in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonylimide) can be controlled with light. We explored the phase behavior of this block polymer at a concentration of 30 wt % as a function of temperature. Remarkably, this solution shows ordering into hexagonally closed packed spheres (HCP) upon heating under visible light, as confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering. Small amplitude oscillatory shear rheology was used to demonstrate that the system could readily be converted between HCP and disorder by switching between visible and UV light wavelengths at 100 °C. This switching was cycled six times, without any noticeable change in the ordered or disordered state. The dependence on illuminating wavelength arises from the changes in polarity of the azobenzene moiety, which modulates its solubility in this ionic liquid to a significant extent. This is the first example of reversible light-triggered ordering of a "coil-coil" block polymer, a phenomenon that has been previously observed only in liquid crystalline systems.

Abstract:A group of polymerizable amphiphiles, with their critical packing parameters systematically varied, were studied with respect to the phase behavior and immobilization of their lyotropic liquid-crystalline phase structures. Small-angle X-ray scattering and polarized light microscopy were used to study their liquid-crystalline phases before and after photopolymerization. The liquid crystallinity of the amphiphiles depended on the contents of both oil and water in the ternary systems. Through photopolymerization, hexagonal phases could generally be immobilized, with the structural order reduced to various degrees. However, the cubic phases evolved with polymerization into another structural pattern, which was possibly related to the lamellar structure. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The photoinduced solid‒liquid phase transition is a fascinating phenomenon that can be utilized for a range of applications, including debondable adhesives, photolithography, and soft actuators; however, developing polymers with this function is not trivial. In this work, we report an azobenzene (Azo)-containing polymer capable of rapid room-temperature photoliquefaction upon UV irradiation and elucidate the design principles for photoliquefying polymers that harness the photothermal effect. We prepare a series of Azo polymers by coupling diacrylate Azo with dithiol-functionalized flexible spacers of different lengths, such as ethylene glycol (EG), hexa(ethylene glycol) (HEG), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). EG-Azo, with the shortest spacer, has a high melting temperature ( T m ) of 78 °C due to the strong interactions among the liquid-crystalline Azo molecules. Owing to the high T m , EG-Azo does not exhibit a photoinduced solid‒liquid phase transition, although it has the greatest photothermal effect among the polymers (temperature rise to 50 °C). The incorporation of the longer spacers effectively decreases the T m of the Azo polymers. For example, PEG-Azo possesses a reduced T m of 40 °C, thereby enabling photoliquefaction at room temperature after only 1 min of UV irradiation. PEG-Azo can be reversibly returned to a solid-state within 5 min after the UV light is turned off.

Abstract:Utilizing an optimized azobenzene precursor and polydimethylsiloxane-soft-template-based secondary replication, we achieved light-driven switching of superhydrophobic adhesion of water droplets on a micro-arrayed liquid crystal polymer film, which is cross-linked in nematic phase and guarantees a satisfying stability for practical application. Regulated by alternating irradiation of UV-Vis light (365 nm/530 nm), the micro-arrayed film showed an ideal quick (<1 min) and reversible switch of superhydrophobic adhesion. This kind of non-contact real-time controllable switching of microdroplet's adhesion might inspire and facilitate the designs and applications in novel microfluidic devices.

Abstract:Hypothesis: One of the main advances in double-chain surfactant systems has been their progress from the construction of assemblies to the transformation application in medicine and material science, especially to the drug delivery systems. Thus, it is critical to develop stimuli-responsive assemblies based on double-chain surfactants. We predicted that reversible assembly switching can be achieved by manipulation of the ternary host-guest competitive complexation among 0-cyclodextrin (0-CD), surfactants, and designed azobenzene (Azo). Experiments: In this work, Azo was introduced into vesicles using supramolecular assembly strategy. Vesicles are formed only when Azo moieties are in trans-form. UV switching of Azo groups led to fast disruption of the Azo@0-CD complexes and relatively slow disintegration of the vesicles. With the alterative irradiation of UV and Vis light, the photoisomerization of azo group provokes the reversible disassembly and reassembly of vesicles. Findings: This photo-responsive supramolecular strategy offered a controllable way to prepare responsive vesicles assembled from complex double-chain surfactants, such as phospholipids, which could be further used in drug delivery systems. This new perspective is instructive for the design and functional use of complex surfactants assembly. Importantly, the study results paved the way for the development of novel light-responsive assembly materials operating in aqueous media and biological field. (c) 2021 Published by Elsevier Inc.
