Abstract:With the increasing application of concrete in building construction, architects' focus has shifted from the structural materials of concrete to its own texture. The article analyzed the relationship and development trends between architectural design and urban design, and conducted academic research and analysis based on the research of large-scale architectural design and transparent concrete materials in large-scale architectural design. Guided by the course "Material and Craft", this article analyzed various building materials used in building construction today. From the discussion on the use of transparent concrete materials in large-scale architectural design, it can be seen that in architectural design, engineering designers must have a precise grasp of the basic properties of transparent concrete materials, and combine them with the needs of architectural design to make reasonable choices of transparent concrete materials and apply them scientifically in architectural design.

Abstract:The paper describes the author’s experience of studying and working in the studio of Professor Kramer at the ETH-Z.Under Professor Kramer’s supervision, the author gained a deeper understanding of Dutch Structuralism, which was prevalent in the field of architecture in the 1960s, and a clearer understanding of Professor Kramer’s architectural thinking. The author applied structuralist theory to the design and practice of projects in aid of Africa, and subsequently completed a doctoral thesis on the perceived villages transformation in southern Jiangsu Province of China. Finally, the structuralist thinking eventually led the author to the field of morphological research.

Abstract:With the progress of the times, Chinese education must enable students to understand that architecture is not only a tool for life, but also an artistic creation. Architectural aesthetics also involves historical, cultural, and social factors, as well as psychological health. To cultivate architects with good artistic cultivation, it is necessary to increase education in art, aesthetics, psychology, and humanities such as traditional architectural theory, Chinese traditional philosophy, Chinese and Western architectural aesthetics, aesthetic principles, Chinese and foreign art history, mental health, architectural geomantic omen, literature, calligraphy and painting appreciation, sculpture, photography, etc. In recent years, some art colleges in China, such as the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts of Shanghai University, have successively introduced the subject of architecture, which is a great experiment and makes up for the shortcomings of traditional engineering and architecture colleges that focus on technology and light art. In terms of architecture education, it is necessary to cultivate students' creative thinking and enhance their artistic cultivation, and closely unite architectural aesthetics with mental health. In this regard, we are continuously discussing teaching methods, summing up teaching experience, and introducing new ideas to keep pace with the times.

Abstract:This paper presents the development of ways of learning based on material and materiality in architectural education. Some basic principles were founded in a material-based studio learning process when previously developed by Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Bauhaus, two architecture schools established along with the rise of new materials and technology introduced in the industrialization era. Since both schools implemented material thinking as part of their learning process, it has undergone a transformation following the development of new technologies. But there may still be some principles that exert a strong influence on some schools around the world. The critical question is what makes material-based learning still important to develop in architecture education?The qualitative research in this article was conducted in a third-year architectural design studio that applies material-based design through a case study of two different types of materials. This study aims to see the relevance of material-based learning principles that were previously applied to the current methods and practices of architectural education. The analysis is carried out by investigating the development of the learning method in accordance with material issues that are resolved with a different approach. The results of this study indicate that the understanding of materiality is a fundamental thing that needs to be maintained in architecture education to develop critical thinking through material-based learning.

Abstract:Professor Kramel’s impact on China’s contemporary architectural academia is present in multiple regards and on various levels. The paper uses the theme of “tectonic” to explain the process of establishing the academic confidence of tectonic culture: Kramel’s successful teaching system combining construction centered with tectonic thought of ETH-Z in 1990’s offered the author, who had been comprehended already Chinese traditional “yingzao”（Baokunst）, deep experience and the academic confidence to connect “yingzao” with the International modern architectural system. It is logical, as a result, to introduce Professor Kenneth Frampton’s Studies of Tectonic Culture to China to further this academic project in china.

Abstract:This study focuses on the topic of “Urban Village Renovation Design” under the complex and diversified social needs in the third year of the architecture undergraduate program at Zhejiang University, China. Based on the theory and method of “situational teaching,” this study proposes a teaching framework integrating the investigation and cognition of nonmorphological elements, such as historical background, economic structure, social structure, public service, and human needs. The study aims to reveal the analysis and response of site investigation and architectural programming to social needs in the realistic context, and take nonmorphological elements as one of the important factors to promote the rationality and authenticity of architectural design, standardize the teaching process in the form of the teaching framework, and realize the teaching goal of solving social needs by design. Qualitative analyses are used to evaluate whether the proposed teaching framework achieves the expected teaching effects according to Bloom’s Taxonomy. We then use the Kirkpatrick model to quantitatively evaluate the specific effects of the framework, and the differences in the positive effects of nonmorphological elements on teaching are explored. In addition, regression analysis is used to discuss ways of obtaining nonmorphological elements. The results show that the teaching framework is a feasible method to improve students’ understanding of social problems and implement reasonable architectural programming that integrates nonmorphological elements in the architectural design course. To some extent, this teaching framework addresses the neglect of nonmorphological elements in traditional Chinese architectural design teaching, and forms an experience-based teaching methodology that can be used to guide architectural design teaching on other topics. This study is helpful in exploring the value and potential of nonmorphological elements in architectural design and provides a reference for college teachers engaged in architectural programming and design teaching.

Abstract:Abstract In order to analyze the selection and application of environmental protection materials in contemporary architecture from the perspective of phenomenology, this article takes advantage of data and theoretical analysis methods to explore the works of three contemporary architects, namely Wang Shu, Steven Holl and Peter Zumthor. This article also makes a comparative analysis of materials. It aims to explain that different types of materials show different ecological characteristics. According to the research, hypotheses can be made: one is to realize the ecology of traditional materials through recycling; the other is to realize the ecology of natural materials through obtaining materials from local sources; the third is to realize the ecology of modern materials through the combination of high technology. Additionally, the application of materials in construction is diversified, and it usually uses a variety of materials and construction methods in the same building. In terms of materials, architectures explored in this paper, on the one hand, reflect the place spirit and perceptual feeling of phenomenology; on the other hand, it is express the concern for the sustainable development of the environment.
