Abstract:For an integer <math>ρ</math> such that <math>1≤ρ≤v∕3</math>, define <math>β(ρ,v)</math> to be the maximum number of blocks in any partial Steiner triple system on <math>v</math> points in which the maximum partial parallel class has size <math>ρ</math>. We obtain lower bounds on <math>β(ρ,v)</math> by giving explicit constructions, and upper bounds on <math>β(ρ,v)</math> result from counting arguments. We show that <math>β(ρ,v)∈Θ(v)</math> if <math>ρ</math> is a constant, and <math>β(ρ,v)∈Θ(v2)</math> if <math>ρ=v∕c</math>, where <math>c</math> is a constant. When <math>ρ</math> is a constant, our upper and lower bounds on <math>β(ρ,v)</math> differ by a constant that depends on <math>ρ</math>. Finally, we apply our results on <math>β(ρ,v)</math> to obtain infinite classes of sequenceable partial Steiner triple systems.
