Abstract:In this paper, we first prove that the nonexistence of the maximal spacelike submanifolds with positive sectional curvture in the pseudo-Riemannian space form of negative sectional curvature, then give a condition under which the submanifolds are totally geodesic.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that there us no compact stable minimal submanifolds in a compact simply-connected 0.77-pinched Riemannian manifold, so that a conjecture of Lawson-Simons is supported In particular, the conjecture is true for complete L-pinched hypersurfaces in Rm+l with m greater than or equal to 3, Moreover, the instability of a compact domain of a minimal submanifold in delta -pinched manifolds is considered.

Abstract:We show that the combination of non-negative sectional curvature (or $2$-intermediate Ricci curvature) and strict positivity of scalar curvature forces rigidity of complete (non-compact) two-sided stable minimal hypersurfaces in a $4$-manifold with bounded curvature. In particular, this implies the nonexistence of complete two-sided stable minimal hypersurface in a closed $4$-manifold with positive sectional curvature. Our work leads to new comparison results. We also construct various examples showing rigidity of stable minimal hypersurfaces can fail under other curvature conditions.

Let [math] be an [math]-dimensional oriented compact submanifold with constant normalized scalar curvature [math] in the space form [math]. Denote by [math] and [math] the mean curvature and the Ricci curvature of [math] respectively. By applying Cheng-Yau's self-adjoint operator, we first prove that if [math] is a hypersurface in a unit sphere, and [math], then [math] is totally umbilical. Furthermore, we investigate the submanifolds in [math] with flat normal bundle satisfying [math], and obtain a complete classification theorem.

Abstract:We prove that the scalar curvature is a rigid invariant for complete maximal spacelike $p$-submanifolds in the pseudo-hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{p,q}$. We characterize the $p$-submanifolds achieving the bound and study the hyperbolicity of maximal $p$-submanifolds of $\mathbb{H}^{p,q}$. In codimension $q=1$, we deduce a rigidity result concerning the Ricci curvature of maximal hypersurfaces in anti-de Sitter spaces.

Abstract:In 2014, Gromov vaguely conjectured that a sequence of manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature should have a subsequence which converges in some weak sense to a limit space with some generalized notion of nonnegative scalar curvature. The conjecture has been made precise at an IAS Emerging Topics meeting: requiring that the sequence be three dimensional with uniform upper bounds on diameter and volume, and a positive uniform lower bound on MinA, which is the minimum area of a closed minimal surface in the manifold. Here we present a sequence of warped product manifolds with warped circles over standard spheres, that have circular fibres over the poles whose length diverges to infinity, that satisfy the hypotheses of this IAS conjecture. We prove this sequence converges in the W 1 , p sense for p < 2 to an extreme limit space that has nonnegative scalar curvature in the distributional sense as defined by Lee-LeFloch and that the total distributional scalar curvature converges. This paper only requires expertise in smooth Riemannian Geometry, smooth minimal surfaces, and Sobolev Spaces. In a second paper, requiring expertise in metric geometry, the first two authors prove intrinsic flat and Gromov–Hausdorff convergence of our sequence to this extreme limit space and investigate its geometric properties.

A conformal invariant and its application to the nonexistence of minimal submanifolds

Abstract:Let $(M^m,g)$ be an $m$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold with non-negative sectional curvatures, $m\ge 3$. We define a conformal invariant and prove that, if the conformal invariant is bounded from above by a constant depending only on $m$, then there are no closed $n$-dimensional stable minimal submanifolds in $M$ for all $\xi(m)\le n\le m-2$, where $\xi(m)=1$ when $3\le m\le 5$ and $\xi(m)=2$ when $m\ge 6$. In particular, a conformal $m$-sphere with non-negative sectional curvatures does not admit any closed $n$-dimensional stable minimal submanifold for all $\xi(m)\le n\le m-2$.

Abstract:We study minimal hypersurfaces in manifolds of non-negative Ricci curvature, Euclidean volume growth and quadratic curvature decay at infinity. By comparison with capped spherical cones, we identify a precise borderline for the Ricci curvature decay. Above this value, no complete area-minimizing hypersurfaces exist. Below this value, in contrast, we construct examples.

Abstract:We extend the vanishing and sphere theorems due to Lawson, Simons, Xin, Shiohama and Xu. By using the techniques of calculus of variations in the geometric measure theory, we prove the vanishing theorem for homology groups of submanifolds in the hyperbolic space H-n(c) with negative constant curvature c. Moreover, we obtain a topological sphere theorem for certain complete submanifolds in H-n(c).

Abstract:We study the geometry of a weak Riemannian metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of compact spacelike Cauchy hypersurfaces in a globally hyperbolic spacetime. We show that the geodesic distance (i.e. the infimum of lengths of paths between two given points) is positive, and that the sectional curvature is well defined and non-positive.

Abstract:Ever since geometry was developed in ancient times, lines of shortest length have always been used in studying global problems. In this century the work of Bonnet, Cartan, Hadamard, Cohn-Vossen, Busemann, Synge, Rauch, Klingenberg, Berger, Bott, Penrose, Hawking, Cheeger, Gromoll, Meyer, Gromov and others demonstrates how the properties of geodesics can be used to study the global topological structure of manifolds with suitable assumptions on the curvature. Most of this work depends on the study of the variational properties of the length of the geodesics that were involved in the problem. Usually the existence of the extremal geodesics is not difficult to prove. The role of the curvature appears in the second variational formula. Since a geodesic is one-dimensional, one needs to know the information of the curvature tensor along the two-dimensional planes which are tangential to the geodesic. As a result, one usually makes assumptions on the sectional curvature and the Ricci curvature of the manifold. If one wants to study parts of the curvature tensor which are much weaker than the Ricci curvature and the sectional curvature, geodesics do not seem to be adequate, and extremal objects of higher dimension are natural tools. A natural scalar invariant of the curvature tensor is the scalar curvature. The scalar curvature turns out to play an important role in general relativity also.Lichnerowicz [5] was the first person to find a topological obstruction to the existence of metrics with positive scalar curvature. Abstract:We show that any effective isometric torus action of maximal rank on a compact Riemannian manifold with positive (sectional) curvature and maximal symmetry rank, that is, on a positively curved sphere, lens space, complex or real projective space, is equivariantaly diffeomorphic to a linear action. We show that a compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- or 5-manifold of quasipositive curvature and maximal symmetry rank must be diffeomorphic to the 4-sphere, complex projective plane or the 5-sphere.
