Abstract:A novel tetrastilbene, heyneanol A, was isolated from stems of Vitis heyneana together with the previously known ampelopsin C, ampelopsin A and (+)-ε-viniferin. Its complex polycyclic structure was elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR analyses.

Abstract:A new stilbene, (trans)-4-[2-(3, 5-dimethoxyphenyl) ethenyl]-1,2-benzenediol (1), was isolated from the whole herbs of Sphaerophysa salsula, together with (trans)-4-[2-(3, 5-dimethoxy phenyl) ethenyl]-2-methoxyphenol (2) and daucosterol. The structure of 1 was determined on the basis of spectroscopic evidences.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the chemical constituents of oligostilbenes from Vitis davidii.METHOD:Compounds were isolated with polystyrene resin RA, silica gel and C18 column chromatography. The structures were elucidated by means of spectroscopic evidence.RESULT:Seven compounds were obtained and identified as resveratrol, heyneanol A, ampelopsin E, amurensin B, (+)-epsilon-viniferin, vitisin A and amurensin G.CONCLUSION:All the compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time.

Abstract:Three new triterpenoid derivatives, named (15 alpha)-15-hydroxysoyasapogenol B (1), (7 beta,15 alpha)-7,15-dihydroxysoyasapogenol B (2), and (7 beta)-7,29-dihydroxysoyasapogenol B (3), were isolated from cultures of the plant endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis clavispora. Their structures and relative configurations were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis and X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:Caragaphenol A (1), a new trimeric stilbene, was isolated from the roots of Caragana stenophylla (Leguminosae) along with three known oligomeric stilbenes: (+)-alpha-viniferin (2), miyabenol C (3) and kobophenol A (4). The stereostructure of 1 was elucidated by one- and two-dimensional (1D- and 2D-)-NMR spectral studies.

Abstract:Two new stilbenoids, stemobenoids A (1) and B (2), together with three known compounds were obtained from the roots of Stemona tuberosa. The structures of the new compounds were established by extensive spectroscopic analysis, including HRMS, 1D and 2D NMR data. Compounds 1 and 2 displayed potent quinone reductase inducing activity in Hepa 1c1c7 cells.

Abstract:Two previously unknown resveratrol trimers named wilsonols A–B, as well as a resveratrol tetramer named wilsonol C, were isolated from Vitis wilsonae Veitch, together with 12 known oligostilbenes. Their chemical structures have been elucidated by detailed analyses of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data, as well as chemical evidence obtained via either catalysis with HRP (horseradish peroxidase) and H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide), acid, or UV irradiation. During the chemical processes, a biomimetic resveratrol tetramer named diviniferin B that has not been found in nature was obtained. These oligostilbenes showed potent scavenging abilities towards DPPH radicals and selective quenching effects on 1O2 radicals. Furthermore, the biogenetic transformations between the 16 oligostilbenes have been elaborated chemically to provide a comprehensive mechanism of the antioxidative defense system in this plant species.

Abstract:Five resveratrol tetramers, amurensins I-M, were isolated from the roots of Vitis amurensis (Rupr.), together with five known resveratrol tetramers, (+)-hopeaphenol, isohopeaphenol, vitisin A, (+)-vitisifuran A, and heyneanol A. Their structures and stereochemistry were determined by chemical and spectroscopic methods, especially by use of 2D NMR analysis. Some of them had an ampelopsin A or a balanocarpol unit, in which the conformations of the seven-membered carbon ring were described for the first time. The anti-inflammatory activities of the tetramers were also tested. Among them, (+)-hopeaphenol, isohopeaphenol, vitisin A, (+)-vitisifuran A and heyneanol A showed potent inhibition on the biosynthesis of leukotriene B4 (LTB4), and amurensins I and L showed strong antagonism of the histamine acceptor.

Abstract:Laetevirenols F (1) and G (2), two novel stilbene tetramers with an unprecedented skeleton, were isolated from Parthenocissus laetevirens. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments, and their possible biogenetic pathway was discussed. In addition, both compounds were determined to be potent singlet-oxygen quenchers by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments, which highlights their potential pharmacological applications in singlet oxygen mediated diseases.

Abstract:Five new stilbene oligomers, laetevirenol A-E (4-8), were isolated from Parthenocissus laetevirens, together with three known stilbene oligomers (2, 3, and 9). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, including 1D and 2D NMR experiments. Afterward the absolute configurations were determined. Biomimetic transformations revealed a possible biogenetic route, where stilbene trimers were enzymatically synthesized for the first time. In addition, their antioxidant activities were evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The results showed that stilbene oligomers with an unusual phenanthrene moiety exhibited much stronger antioxidant activities. Thus, the photocatalyzed cyclization of stilbenes was supposed to be an antioxidant activity promoting transformation, which was hypothesized to play a role in the antioxidative defense system of the plant.

Abstract:Hopeanolin (1), an unusual resveratral trimer with an ortho-quinone nucleus, was isolated and characterized from the stem bark of Hopea exalata. Also obtained were six known stibenoids, shoreaphenol (2), vaticanol G (3), alpha-viniferin (4), pauciflorol A (5), vaticanol A (6), and trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene 2-C-glucoside (7). The structure of 1 was determined by spectroscopic data interpretation. Compounds 1-7 were tested for antifungal activity and inhibitory effects against jack bean urease. Hopeanolin (1) demonstrated antifungal activity in the MIC value range 0.1-22.5 microg/mL.

Abstract:Phytochemical examination of the branches and twigs of the tropical plant Vatica mangachapoi resulted in the isolation of three novel oligostilbenes named vaticahainols A–C (1–3) along with seventeen known oligostilbenes (4–20). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data analysis, modified Mosher's method, and quantum chemical computation. All of the isolated phytochemicals were screened for their xanthine oxidase (XO) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities.

Abstract:Phytochemical investigation of roots and rhizomes of Veratrum taliense yielded a new and six known steroidal alkaloids as well as a new and one reported stilbene derivative. By a combination of spectral methods (IR, MS, H-1- and C-13-NMR, COSY, HMQC, HMBC, and NOESY), the structure of the new alkaloid was established as 15-angeloylgermine while the known ones were identified as 15-(2-methylbutyroyl)germine, jervine, 3-veratroylzygadenine, germine, veramiline 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside and stenophylline B-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside. The new stilbenoid, named veraphenol, was determined to be 2-(3',5'-dihydroxyphenyl)-6-hydroxybenzofuran, and the known one was shown to be resveratrol. The in vitro enzyme assay indicated that 3-veratroylzygadenine and resveratrol are inhibitors of xanthine oxidase. The enzyme inhibitory action of resveratrol, the most active compound found so far in V. taliense, is dose-dependent with the IC50 value at 30 mu M (the IC50 value of allopurinol used as a positive control in the study is 10 mu M).

Abstract:Six new oligostilbenes, carastilphenols A-E (1–5) and (–)-hopeachinol B (6), with three reported oligostilbenes were obtained from the stems of Caragana sinica. The structures of compounds 1–6 were determined by comprehensive spectroscopy analysis, and their absolute configurations were determined by electronic circular dichroism calculations. Thus, natural tetrastilbenes were determined as absolute configuration for the first time. Also, we did several pharmacological essays. In the antiviral tests, compounds 2, 4 and 6 showed moderate anti-coxsackie virus B3 type (CVB3) effect on Vero cells activities in vitro with IC50 values of 19.2 ∼ 69.3 μM; and compounds 3 and 4 showed different levels of anti-respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) effect on Hep2 cells activities in vitro with IC50 values of 23.1 and 33.3 μM, respectively. As for hypoglycemic activity, compounds 6–9 (10 μM) showed the inhibition of α-glucosidase in vitro with IC50 values of 0.1 ∼ 0.4 μM; and compound 7 showed significant inhibition (88.8%, 10 μM) of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) with IC50 value of 1.1 μM in vitro.

The molecule contains five six-membered rings adopting distorted boat, half-chair and chair conformations. The hydroxy groups serve as hydrogen-bond donors and the carbonyl groups as acceptors, forming molecular chains parallel to the b axis.

Abstract:Two new triterpenoids, (3 beta)-olean-12-ene-3,23-diol (1) and (6 alpha)-6-hydroxyolean-12-en-3-one (2) were isolated from the MeOH extract of the stalks of Celastrus hypoleucus (OLIV.) WARB., together with the seven known compounds (3p,22a)-3,22-dihydroxyolean-12-en-29-oic acid, beta-amyrin and beta-amyrin palmitate, wilforlide A, wilforilide B, palmitic acid, and beta-sitosterol. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data and, in the case of 2, by X-ray crystallography. Compound 1 showed moderate cytotoxicity against human cervical squamous carcinoma (Hela) cells.

Abstract:The analysis of vine stem extract from MILLETTIA DIELSIANA Harms yielded a novel benzil ( 1) and five new prenylated isoflavones ( 2 - 6) together with three known isoflavones ( 7 - 10) and one known flavone ( 11), and their structures were elucidated on the basis of chemical and spectral analysis. The absolute configuration of the 3'',4''-diols in 6 was determined by observing the CD induced after addition of dimolybdenum tetraacetate in DMSO solution (Snatzke's method). Some isolates were tested for their anti-inflammatory and antithrombase activities and cytotoxicities. Compound 2, barbigerone, and genistein showed significant anti-inflammatory activity, with inhibitory ratios 59.1 %, 59.5 %, and 58.5 %, respectively, at 10 muM, while compound 4 exhibited moderate cytotoxicity.

Abstract:Chunganenol (1), an unusual resveratrol hexamer, has been isolated from Vitis chunganensis. Its unprecedented structure has been assigned through detailed analyses of 2D NMR data and consideration of oligostilbene biosynthetic pathway, representing the first highly condensed stilbene oligomer from Vitaceous plants. It also featured a novel interunit lingkage where two stilbene units are connected by a methylene bridge. Moreover, 1 exhibited potent and selective quenching effects on singlet oxygen, and might play a role in the antioxidative defense system of the plant.
