Abstract:The Nambu spinor Green’s function approach is applied to study proximity effects in ferromagnet/superconductor (FM/SC) structures. They include the induced superconducting order parameter and density of states (DOS) with superconducting feature on the FM side, and spin-dependent DOS within the energy gap on the SC side. The latter indicates an appearance of gapless superconductivity and a coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in a small regime near the interface. The influence of exchange energy in FM and barrier strength at interface on the proximity effects is discussed.

Abstract:We study various aspects of proximity effects in $F/S$ (Ferromagnet/Superconductor) bilayers, where $F$ has a spiral magnetic texture such as that found in Holmium, Erbium and other materials, and $S$ is a conventional s-wave superconductor. We numerically solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations self-consistently and use the solutions to compute quantities relevant to the proximity effects in these bilayers. We obtain the relation between the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ and the thicknesses $d_F$ of the magnetic layer by solving the linearized BdG equations. We find that the $T_c(d_F)$ curves include multiple oscillations. Moreover, the system may be reentrant not only with $d_F$, as is the case when the magnet is uniform, but with temperature $T$: the superconductivity disappears in certain ranges of $d_F$ or $T$. The $T$ reentrance occurs when $d_F$ is larger than the spatial period of the conical exchange field. We compute the condensation free energies and entropies from the full BdG equations and find the results are in agreement with $T_c$ values obtained by linearization. The inhomogeneous nature of the magnet makes it possible for all odd triplet pairing components to be induced. We have investigated their properties and found that, as compared to the singlet amplitude, both the $m=0$ and $m=\pm 1$ triplet components exhibit long range penetration. For nanoscale bilayers, the proximity lengths for both layers are also obtained. These lengths oscillate with $d_F$ and they are found to be long range on both sides. These results are shown to be consistent with recent experiments. We also calculate the reverse proximity effect described by the three dimensional local magnetization, and the local DOS, which reveals important energy resolved signatures associated with the proximity effects.

Abstract:The recent experiments on ultrathin superconductors (SCs), in proximity with some substrates, have unveiled the possible enhancement and suppression of superconducting order parameters; yet their mechanisms are still ambiguous. Here we examine the inverse proximity effect between an ultrathin SC and the surface state of a topological insulator. We show the effect of the renormalized electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling constant. on superconducting order parameters is determined by two important mechanisms: the modified density of states (DOS) N(epsilon(F)) from the occupied bands near the Fermi surfaces, and the renormalized interaction U-eff from the unoccupied bands. We demonstrate the enhanced order parameter near the bottom of the double-well bands with appropriate interface coupling due to the enhanced DOS; while in the strong coupling regime we observe the suppressed order parameter even with finite occupation in the Fermi surface, which is the result of the conjunct influence of the suppressed DOS and the renormalized U-eff. This picture is applied to multiple SC layers, showing that the oscillation of order parameter can be well ascribed to the oscillation of an e-ph coupling constant, instead of solely the DOS. Our results not only provide a theoretical basis for tuning of the order parameters in the SC by chemical potential and interface coupling, but also provide some new insight into the order parameters in a large number of SC-substrate hybrid systems via the inverse proximity effect.

Abstract:Proximity effect between superconductor and normal metal on finite quasi-2D lattices is investigated by using Bogoliubov–de Gennes equation. By introducing two types of spatial distribution of attractive interaction near the interface, the step like distribution and the exponential decay distribution, we explain the U-shape and V-shape gaps observed in STM experiments.

Abstract:The superconducting proximity effect is a long-standing topic of great importance in condensed matter physics. A crucial but unresolved issue is which interfacial and material details determine the efficiency of the proximity effect. In this paper, we study an epitaxially grown superconductor/normal metal (SC-NM) heterostructure (Pb/Ag) and find a spatially constant superconducting gap determined by local tunneling spectroscopy and magnetoresponse measurements, despite the highly mismatched Fermi surfaces between individual Pb and Ag epitaxial layers and the large differences in the lattice constants and electronic densities of states in the separate components. The uniform superconducting gap is in contrast to the spatially varying pair potential with a discontinuity at the interface theoretically predicted for an ideal SC-NM junction and experimentally observed previously in several lateral SC-NM junctions. We experimentally verify that the transmission of electrons across the interface in the vertical Pb/Ag heterostructure is high enough that a new band structure emerges even at the single-particle level. Our experimental results call for further theoretical work in order to develop predictive power for the proximity effect starting from realistic, materially relevant microscopic models.

Abstract:Recently there has been reinvigorated interest in the superconducting proximity effect, driven by predictions of the emergence of Majorana fermions. To help guide this search, we have developed a phenomenological model for the tunneling spectra in anisotropic superconductor-normal metal proximity devices. We combine successful approaches used in s-wave proximity and standard d-wave tunneling to reproduce tunneling spectra in d-wave proximity devices, and clarify the origin of various features. Different variations of the pair potential are considered, resulting from the proximity-induced superconductivity. Furthermore, the effective pair potential felt by the quasiparticles is momentum-dependent in contrast to s-wave superconductors. The probabilities of reflection and transmission are calculated by solving the Bogoliubov equations. Our results are consistent with experimental observations of the unconventional proximity effect and provide important experimental parameters such as the size and length scale of the proximity induced gap, as well as the conditions needed to observe the reduced and full superconducting gaps.

Abstract:The proximity effect, quasiparticle transport, and local magnetic moment in ferromagnet--d-wave superconductor junctions with {110}-oriented interface are studied by solving self-consistently the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations within an extended Hubbard model. It is found that the proximity induced order parameter oscillates in the ferromagnetic region. The modulation period is shortened with the increased exchange field while the oscillation amplitude is depressed by the interfacial scattering. With the determined superconducting energy gap, a transfer matrix method is proposed to compute the subgap conductance within a scattering approach. Many novel features including the zero-bias conductance dip and splitting are exhibited with appropriate values of the exchange field and interfacial scattering strength. The conductance spectrum can be influenced seriously by the spin-flip interfacial scattering. In addition, a sizable local magnetic moment near the {110}-oriented surface of the d-wave superconductor is discussed.

Abstract:We give an overview of the open-boundary planar supercell stack method (OPSSM), as a means for treating 3D quantum transport in mesoscopic tunnel structures. The flexibility of the method allows us to examine a variety of physical phenomena relevant to quantum transport. In this work we focus on the effects of interface roughness and embedded nanostructures in tunnel devices. Four representative applications of OPSSM are discussed: (1) interface roughness in double barrier resonant tunneling structures, (2) self-organized InAs quantum dot insertions in GaAs/AlAs double barrier structures, (3) tunneling characteristics of ultra-thin oxides with interface roughness, and, (4) embedded quantum wire model of dielectric breakdown. These examples demonstrate scattering and localization effects under different biasing conditions.
Proximity Effects in Yba2cu3o7/La0.7sr0.3mno3 Heterostructures

Abstract:YBa2Cu3O7/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (YBCO/LSMO) heterostructures with different thicknesses of LSMO (d(LSMO)) were fabricated, and their electrical transport properties were investigated. It was found that for dLSMO less than or equal to 40 nm the LSMO films are non-magnetic insulators, and the YBCO/LSMO systems remain superconducting; while for d(LSMO) greater than or equal to 50 nm the LSMO films become ferromagnetic metals, and the YBCO/LSMO systems lose their superconductivity, due to the strong proximity effect of ferromagnetism in LSMO. A new approach based on the proximity effect is proposed to measure the intrinsic normal-state resistivity below T-c for high-T-c cuprates.

Abstract:We theoretically study the proximity effect and the inverse proximity effect in a topological insulator/iron-based superconductor heterostructure based on the microscopic model. The superconducting order parameter is self-consistently calculated. Its magnitude decreases when the coupling of these two systems increases. The induced pairing order parameter exhibits negative and positive values, while the negative pairing near the $\Gamma=(0,0)$ point is dominant. This parameter has twofold symmetry and includes an $s$-wave component and a $d$-wave component. The magnitude of the induced pairing order parameter has a maximal value at the coupling strength $t_p=0.3\approx 0.06$ eV. The spectral function and the local density of states are calculated and may be used to probe the proximity effect. We also discuss the feedback of the topological insulator to the iron-based superconductor layer. The normal-state Fermi surface is distorted by the coupling, and additional Fermi pockets are induced. An effective spin-orbit interaction term is induced. In the superconducting state, the previous fourfold symmetry of the order parameter is broken, and a $d$-wave component pairing term is also induced. Our main results can be well understood by analyzing the Fermi surfaces of the original systems.

Abstract:Nontrivial topological superconductivity has received enormous research attentions due to its potential for diverse applications in topological quantum computing. The intrinsic issue concerning the correlation between a topological insulator and a superconductor is, however, still widely open. Here, we systemically report an emergent superconductivity in a cross-junction composed of a magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 and a conventional superconductor NbSe2. Remarkably, the interface indicates existence of a reduced superconductivity at surface of NbSe2 and a proximity-effectinduced superconductivity at surface of MnBi2Te4. Furthermore, the in-plane angular-dependent magnetoresistance measurements reveal the fingerprints of the paring symmetry behaviors for these superconducting gaps as a unconventional nature. Our findings extend our views and ideas of topological superconductivity in the superconducting heterostructures with time-reversal symmetry breaking, offering an exciting opportunity to elucidate the cooperative effects on the surface state of a topological insulator aligning a superconductor.

Abstract:Proximity induced superconductivity with a clean interface has attracted much attention in recent years. We discuss how the commonly-employed electron tunneling approximation can be hybridized with first-principles calculation to achieve a quantitative characterization starting from the microscopic atomic structure. By using the graphene-Zn heterostructure as an example, we compare this approximated treatment to the full \textit{ab inito} anisotropic Eliashberg formalism. Based on the calculation results, we discuss how superconductivity is affected by the interfacial environment.

Abstract:: The Nambu spinor Green's function approach is applied to calculating the density of states (DOS) and superconducting order parameter in normal-metal/insulator/ferromagnet/superconductor (NM/I/FM/SC) junctions. It is found that the s -wave superconductivity and ferromagnetism can coexist near the FM/SC interface, which is induced by proximity effect. On the SC side, the spin-dependent DOS appears both within and without the energy gap. On the FM side, the superconducting order parameter displays a damped oscillation and the DOS exhibits some superconducting behavior. The calculated result for the DOS in FM for “0 state” and “π state” can reproduce recent tunneling spectra in Al/Al 2 O 3 /PdNi/Nb tunnel junctions.

Abstract:Cd3As2 is a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal with separated Dirac points in momentum space. In spite of extensive transport and spectroscopic studies on its exotic properties, the evidence of superconductivity in its surface states remains elusive. Here, we report the observation of proximity-induced surface superconductivity in Nb/Cd3As2 hybrid structures. Our four-terminal transport measurement identifies a pronounced proximity-induced pairing gap (gap size comparable to Nb) on the surfaces, which exhibits a flat conductance plateau in differential conductance spectra, consistent with our theoretical simulations. The surface supercurrent from Nb/Cd3As2/Nb junctions is also achieved with a Fraunhofer/SQUID-like pattern under out-of-plane/in-plane magnetic fields, respectively. The resultant mapping shows a predominant distribution on the top and bottom surfaces as the bulk carriers are depleted, which can be regarded as a higher dimensional analog of edge supercurrent in two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulators. Our study provides the evidence of surface superconductivity in Dirac semimetals.
Proximity Effect, Andreev Reflections, and Charge Transport in Mesoscopic Superconducting-Semiconducting Heterostructures

Abstract:In the quasi-twodimensional (Q2D) electron gas of an InAs channel between an AlSb substrate and superconducting Niobium layers the proximity effect induces a pair potential so that a Q2D mesoscopic superconducting-normal-superconducting (SNS) junction forms in the channel. The pair potential is calculated with quasiclassical Green's functions in the clean limit. For such a junction alternating Josephson currents and current-voltage characteristics (CVCs) are computed, using the non-equilibrium quasiparticle wavefunctions which solve the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes Equations. The CVCs exhibit features found experimentally by the Kroemer group: A steep rise of the current at small voltages ("foot") changes at a "corner current" to a much slower increase of current with higher voltages, and the zero-bias differential resistance increases with temperature. Phase-coherent multiple Andreev reflections and the associated Cooper pair transfers are the physical mechanisms responsible for the oscillating Josephson currents and the CVCs. Additional experimental findings not reproduced by the theory require model improvements, especially a consideration of the external current leads which should give rise to hybrid quasiparticle/collective mode excitations.

Abstract:Taking into account the interface roughness of normal-metal/superconductor junction, we propose an effective Hamiltonian for the interface scattering. In the framework of Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model, we calculate the differential conductance of N/S junction in the presence of the interface scattering. As well, the effect of the finite lifetime of the quasi-particles due to the inelastic scattering is also addressed. Our results are in qualitative agreement with experiments.
High-resolution spectroscopy of proximity superconductivity in finite-size quantized surface states

Abstract:Adding superconducting (SC) electron pairing via the proximity effect to pristinely non-superconducting materials can lead to a variety of interesting physical phenomena. Particular interest has recently focused on inducing SC into two-dimensional surface states (SSs), potentially also combined with non-trivial topology. We study the mechanism of proximity-induced SC into the Shockley-type SSs of the noble metals Ag(111) and Cu(111) grown on the elemental SC Nb(110) using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The tunneling spectra exhibit an intriguing multitude of sharp states at low energies. Their appearance can be explained by Andreev bound states (ABS) formed by the weakly proximitized SSs subject to lateral finite-size confinement. We study systematically how the proximity gap in the bulk states of both Ag(111) and Cu(111) persists up to island thicknesses of several times the bulk coherence length of Nb. We find that even for thick islands, the SSs acquire a gap, with the gap size for Cu being consistently larger than for Ag. Based on this, we argue that the SC in the SS is not provided through direct overlap of the SS wavefunction with the SC host but can be understood to be mediated by step edges inducing electronic coupling to the bulk. Our work provides important input for the microscopic understanding of induced superconductivity in heterostructures and its spectral manifestation. Moreover, it lays the foundation for more complex SC heterostructures based on noble metals.

Abstract:Superconducting ($S$) thin film superlattices composed of Nb and a normal metal spacer ($N$) have been extensively utilized in Josephson junctions given their favorable surface roughness compared to Nb films of comparable thickness. In this work, we characterize the London penetration depth and Ginzburg-Landau coherence lengths of $S/N$ superlattices using polarized neutron reflectometry and electrical transport. Despite the normal metal spacer layers being only approximately 8% of the total superlattice thickness, we surprisingly find that the introduction of these thin $N$ spacers between $S$ layers leads to a dramatic increase in the measured London penetration depth compared to that of a single Nb film of comparable thickness. Using the measured values for the effective in- and out-of-plane coherence lengths, we quantify the induced anisotropy of the superlattice samples and compare to a single Nb film sample. From these results, we find that that the superlattices behave similarly to layered 2D superconductors.
