Abstract:Ordered mesoporous ruthenium containing carbon (Ru-OMC) catalyst with semi-embedded uniform Ru particle distribution was synthesized by using RuCl3/SBA-15 as a hard template. The sucrose both acts as the carbon precursor and Ru3+ stabilizer. The use of RuCl3/SBA-15 makes more exposed Ru surface available for reactants. The turnover frequency of the Ru-OMC catalyst for hydrogenation of benzene reaches ca. 35,000h−1 at 4MPa, 110°C, which is 12 times improvement compared with that of Ru/OMC catalyst prepared by impregnation. The Ru-OMC catalyst can be recycled more than 9 times without much loss of performance and aggregation of Ru nanoparticles.

Abstract:[GRAPHICS] Attachment of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to ruthenium porphyrin via a covalent etheric bond gives soluble polymer-supported ruthenium catalysts 3-5. These catalysts exhibit high reactivity and selectivity toward alkene epoxidation with 2,6-dichloropyridine N-oxide and alkene cyclopropanation with diazo compounds. The application of these catalysts in the synthesis of unstable organic compounds has been demonstrated.
Preparation and Characterization of Novel Polyethylene Supported Metallocene Catalysts

Abstract:Different meshes powder of polyethylene grafting 4-vinylpyridine copolymers (PEVP) has been produced through the irradiation method. After pretreated with Methylaluminoxane (MAO), the copolymers were used as the supports for Cp2ZrCl2 catalyst. Results of XPS and FTIR measurements show that the catalytic sites have been bridged through MAO on the polyethylene cartier. The percentages of grafting 4-vinylpyridine and supported Cp2ZrCl2 depend on the size of polyethylene powder. The smaller the polyethylene powder, the more percent 4-vinylpyridine group and the Cp2ZrCl2 on the polyethylene chains, and the polyethylene- supported catalyst has a much higher activity for ethylene polymerization.

Abstract:Triazole-ruthenium carbene complexes (TA-Rus) were reported for the first time as a new class of modified Grubbs catalysts to achieve challenging olefin metathesis at higher temperatures without cata-lyst decomposition. Previously reported N-tethered Ru-carbene complexes all suffered from rapid cis-/trans-isomerization, causing significantly reduced catalyst reactivity. These new TA-Ru com-plexes hold the active trans-dichloro conformation even at 80 degrees C, al-lowing effective olefin metathesis for challenging substrates. With this new TA-Ru catalyst, cross-metathesis (CM), ring-closing metath-esis (RCM), and dynamic covalent chemistry (DCvC) were achieved. Excitingly, the reactivity of TA-Ru prevails all previously reported N-coordinated Ru-carbene pre-catalysts, Grubbs II, and Hoveyda-Grubbs, making TA-Rus a transformative catalytic system in olefin catalysis.

Abstract:There are few literature reports on using precatalysts based on ruthenium(II/III) ions in the polymerization of olefins. Therefore, a new coordination compound was designed based on ruthenium(III) ion and 2-phenylpyridine. The resulting monocrystal was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), solid-state (photo)IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The new ruthenium(III) complex compound was used as a precatalyst in the oligomerization reactions of ethylene, 2-propen-1-ol, 2-chloro-2-propen-1-ol, 3-butene-2-ol and 2,3-dibromo-2-propen-1-ol with methylaluminoxane and ethylaluminium dichloride as activators. The catalytic activity of the newly discovered ruthenium(III) complex compound ranges from 159.5 (for 2-chloro-2-propen-1-ol) to 755.6 (for ethylene) g mmol-1 h-1 bar-1, indicating that it is a chemical compound with high catalytic activity. In addition, the oligomerization reaction products were subjected to physicochemical characterization, using BET (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller isotherm), mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), NMR, TGA, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the morphology of the porous polymeric materials was investigated by SEM. The distinguishing feature of the obtained precatalyst is its high catalytic activity under mild reaction conditions, a rare phenomenon. Compared with other precatalysts, it is the most active ruthenium(II/III) ion-based catalytic material used in oligo- and polymerization reactions of ethylene.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of aldehydes and olefins plays a crucial role in the synthesis of various industrial products. Immobilizing noble metal catalysts on solid supports has been pursued to overcome the challenges associated with catalyst separation and recovery. In this study, we explore the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as supports for the immobilization of molecular ruthenium catalysts in the hydrogenation of olefins and aldehydes. We designed a mixed-linker MOF by incorporating the picolylamine moiety, which is a ligand known for its excellent catalytic activity. The ruthenium catalysts were prepared via a simple metal-ligand coordination process without the need for additional treatments. The resulting catalysts exhibit high catalytic activity and a uniform distribution of ruthenium sites on the MOF crystals. The choice of ruthenium precursor has a significant influence on the catalytic performance, with even lower metal content resulting in higher activity. The catalysts achieve high conversion rates and selectivities in the hydrogenation of various olefins. However, in the hydrogenation of aldehydes, due to the harsher conditions required, the formation of small nanoparticles is observed after the reaction. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of picolylamine-modified MOFs as effective supports for the development of highly active heterogeneous catalysts for selective hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:The subject of extensive research, the low-temperature hydrocracking of polyethylene reveals the one-step synthesis of iso -alkanes via metal–acid bifunctional catalysis as an emerging strategy. Zeolites, with their superior compatibility with existing petrochemical infrastructure, serve as the acidic supports of choice. In this research, Ru nanoparticles were loaded onto ZSM-22, a zeolite known for its effective pore-mouth catalysis. Mechanical ball milling enhanced the pore-mouth area and the proximity of metal–acid sites, significantly boosting the hydrocracking reaction. The electronic properties of Ru were modified by selecting various Ru precursors and adjusting loading amounts. In-situ infrared studies showed the detachment of olefin intermediates from Ru sites as a critical factor in controlling hydrocracking and the terminal hydrogenolysis reactions. By combining catalyst characterization with reaction barrier calculations from density functional theory (DFT), it was found that oxidized Ru species aid in the release of olefin intermediates, facilitating Brønsted acid-driven β-scission and isomerization reactions. The study achieved a liquid-phase yield exceeding 82 wt% and an iso/n ratio surpassing 60% under low-energy consumption conditions using commercially available catalysts.

Abstract:Exploring high‐performance styrene epoxidation catalyst is of great significance. However, it still remains a challenge to synthesize heterogeneous catalysts that simultaneously possess excellent styrene activity and styrene oxide selectivity. Herein, we report a heterogeneous isolated single‐atom Ru supported on microporous Beta zeolite (Ru 1 /Beta) catalyst fabricated by a wet impregnation method. We reveal that the extraframework AlOH groups on Beta zeolite are responsible for anchoring Ru species, which is determined by 27 Al MAS NMR analyses. The abundant AlOH on microporous Beta zeolite can lead to single‐atom ruthenium dispersion, thereby resulting in marked enhanced catalytic performance in styrene epoxidation than Ru cluster on Beta zeolite. The turnover frequency (TOF) value of Ru 1 /Beta reaches 353 h ‐1 , 3.8 times over Ru cluster. The unique styrene oxide selectivity is attributed to the isolated single‐atom Ru anchoring on the Lewis acid site (AlOH) of Beta zeolite, which hinders the further ring opening of styrene oxide to phenylacetaldehyde and cleavage double bond of styrene to benzaldehyde.

Abstract:The catalytic efficacy of ruthenium (Ru)-exchanged montmorillonite, a well-established heterogeneous catalyst, was systematically explored to synthesize diverse bis(indolyl)methanes. The developed methodology consistently yielded the desired products with satisfactory to excellent yields, while notable advantages of the proposed approach encompassed minimal reaction times and solvent-free conditions. Furthermore, the method was characterized by its procedural simplicity, facile catalyst synthesis, ready accessibility of the starting materials from commercial sources, and the potential for catalyst recyclability.

Abstract:In this study, non-ionic surfactants, namely Synperonic®F108 and Tween®F108 were used as mediums to dissolve; [RuCl(p-cymene)[(R,R)-Ts-DPEN] for the dosage delivery and recycling of chiral ruthenium catalyst in asymmetric transfer hydrogenation reactions of ketones in water. The non-ionic surfactant-based catalytic systems bearing ruthenium catalyst in microgram scale can be used directly to conduct transfer hydrogenation reactions in nano-sized micelle structures (60-90 nm) in water under an air atmosphere. The micellar catalyst in the aqueous phase can be recycled from the reaction mixture and can be used up to 8th turn in asymmetric transfer hydrogenation reactions of acetophenone.

Abstract:The allylation of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and malononitrile with aliphatic allylic substrates is achieved under mild conditions in the presence of new ruthenium catalysts. The ruthenium complex [Ru(C5Me5)(2-quinolinecarboxylato)(CH2CHCH-n-Pr)] [BF4] as a precatalyst, allows the synthesis of mono-allylated branched derivatives. On the other hand, the parent complex [Ru(C5Me5)(MeCN)(3)] [PF6] as a precatalyst, straightforwardly favours the bis-allylation of the procarbonucleophiles leading to bis-allylated bislinear products. The involvement of the two precatalysts provides a sequential synthesis of unsymmetrical mixed linear-branched bis-allylated derivatives.

Abstract:We reported a universal route for synthesizing porous organic ligands (POLs) via solvothermal polymerization. The POLs were obtained quantitatively, showing high surface area, large pore volume, hierarchical porosity, and superior stability. The POL bearing a triphenylphosphine supported rhodium catalyst (Rh/POL-PPh3) exhibits high activity and excellent recyclability in 1-octene hydroformylation.

Abstract:This report describes synthesis of a new ligand (E)‐N‐(4‐(benzo[d]thiazol‐2‐yl)phenyl)‐1‐(quinolin‐2‐yl)methanimine (L1) and its three ruthenium(II) arene complexes with [RuCl2(p‐cymene)]2 (C1), [RuCl2(benzene)]2 (C2), and [RuCl2(hmb)]2 [hmb = hexamethylbenzene] (C3). The new ligand and complexes were characterized with the help of standard spectroscopic and analytical techniques like 1H and 13C{1H} Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), High‐resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), UV‐Visible, cyclic voltammetry, and elemental analysis. The structure of ruthenium complex (C1) and its binding mode with ligand were authenticated with the help of single crystal X‐ray diffraction. The ruthenium arene complexes (C1‐C3) were used as a catalyst for the α‐olefination of Methylazaarenes. First, methylazaarenes were reacted with alcohols under optimized reaction conditions to produce α‐olefinated products (up to 66%) selectively. Among the three ruthenium complexes, C1 demonstrated the highest yield of olefinated products with 5 mol% catalyst loading. Finally, selected olefin derivatives were tested for their inhibitory potential towards the aggregation of amyloid‐b‐40 (Aβ40) peptide relevant to Alzheimer's disease. Overall, these complexes are promising catalysts for organic transformations, and the synthesized α‐olefinated derivatives could have potential applications for the development of therapeutic agents for Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract:Two new unsymmetrical N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (uNHC)-based ruthenium complexes featuring phenolic OH function were obtained and fully characterised. The more active one was then immobilised on the metal–organic framework (MOF) solid support (Al)MIL-101-NH2. The catalytic activity of such a heterogeneous system was tested, showing that, while the heterogeneous catalyst is less active than the corresponding homogeneous catalyst in solution, it can catalyse selected olefin metathesis reactions, serving as the proof-of-concept for the immobilisation of catalytically active complexes in MOFs using a phenolic tag.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of aromatics is a ubiquitous chemical transformation used in both the petrochemical and specialty industry and is important for the generation of clean diesel fuels. Reported herein is the discovery of a superior heterogeneous catalyst, superior in terms of catalytic activity, selectivity, and lifetime in the hydrogenation of aromatics in the solvent-free system under mild conditions (at 25 degrees C and 42 +/- 1 psig initial H(2) pressure). Ruthenium(0) nanoclusters stabilized by a nanozeolite framework as a new catalytic material is reproducibly prepared from the borohydride reduction of a colloidal solution of ruthenium(III)-exchanged nanozeolites at room temperature and characterized by using ICP-OES, XRD, XPS, DLS, TEM, HRTEM, TEM/EDX, mid-IR, far-IR, and Raman spectroscopy. The resultant ruthenium(0) nanoclusters hydrogenate neat benzene to cyclohexane with 100% conversion under mild conditions (at 25 degrees C and 42 +/- 1 psig initial H(2) pressure) with record catalytic activity (initial TOF = 5430 h(-1)) and lifetime (TTO = 177 200). They provide exceptional catalytic activity not only in the hydrogenation of neat benzene but also in the solvent-free hydrogenation of methyl substituted aromatics such as toluene, o-xylene, and mesitylene under otherwise identical conditions. Moreover, they are an isolable, bottleable, and reusable catalyst in the hydrogenation of neat aromatics. When the isolated ruthenium(0) nanoclusters are reused, they retain 92% of their initial catalytic activity even for the third run in the hydrogenation of neat benzene under the same conditions as those of the first run. The work reported here also includes (i) far-infrared spectroscopic investigation of nanozeolite, ruthenium(III)-exchanged-nanozeolite, and ruthenium(0) nanoclusters stabilized by a nanozeolite framework, indicating that the host framework remains intact after the formation of a nanozeolite framework stabilized ruthenium(0) nanoclusters; (ii) the poisoning experiments performed by using tricyclohexylphosphine (P(C(6)H(11))(3)) and 4-ethyl-2,6,7-trioxa-1-phosphabicyclo[2.2.2]octane PC(6)H(11)O(3) to examine whether the ruthenium(0) nanoclusters are encapsulated in the cages or supported on the external surface of nanozeolite; (iii) a summary section detailing the main findings for the "green chemistry"; and (iv) a review of the extensive literature of benzene hydrogenation, which is also tabulated as part of the Supporting Information .

Abstract:Plastics waste has become a major environmental threat, with polyethylene being one of the most produced and hardest to recycle plastics. Hydrogenolysis is potentially the most viable catalytic technology for recycling. Ruthenium (Ru) is one of the most active hydrogenolysis catalysts but yields too much methane. Here we introduce ruthenium supported on tungstated zirconia (Ru-WZr) for hydrogenolysis of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). We show that the Ru-WZr catalysts suppress methane formation and produce a product distribution in the diesel and wax/lubricant base-oil range unattainable by Ru-Zr and other Ru-supported catalysts. Importantly, the enhanced performance is showcased for real-world, single-use LDPE consumables. Reactivity studies combined with characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that highly dispersed (WOx)n clusters store H as surface hydroxyls by spillover. We correlate this hydrogen storage mechanism with hydrogenation and desorption of long alkyl intermediates that would otherwise undergo further C–C scission to produce methane.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
