Abstract:This paper is an investigation of the frequency effects of word and character on disyllabic word learning by foreign students from non-character-using countries. The investigation is based on an experiment in which 62 disyllabic words of various word and character frequency were selected at random from the learned texts and presented to the first-year students as testees. They were asked to write down the words in Pinyin and their English equivalents. The results show that, 1) word frequency had an effect on word learning, and the words occurring once in the text were learned better than those that did not occur; and 2) character frequency also had an effect on word learning, and the words consisting of high-frequency characters were learned better than those of low-frequency characters. And the effects are stronger for low-frequency-character words than for the high-frequency ones. The mechanism of the frequency effects and the implication to teaching are discussed in the final part.
