Abstract:Seeking the cost-effective, highly efficient functional materials with simple preparation procedures have always been a goal in the field of nuclides separation. Due to the effects of protonation and stability, the recovery of actinides like Th(IV) from molar concentrations of acidic solutions for most present materials still a challenge. Herein, we have combined the recently reported phenanthroline phosphonate (POPhen) ligands holding strong selective affinity for actinides in molar concentrations of HNO3 and the commonly used macroporous resin XAD7 to develop two novel POPhen ligands functionalized XAD-7 composites for the highly efficient removal of Th (IV) from molar concentrations of HNO3 solutions via a simple but effective method. The results of SEM, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, FT-IR, solid state 13C/31P NMR and XPS spectra studies confirmed that two phenanthroline phosphonates nBu-POPhen (n-butyl) and iBu-POPhen (isobutyl) were successfully loaded onto the pore structures of XAD-7 carrier through physical interactions. Both two adsorbents showed strong sorption ability, high selectivity and fast sorption rates for Th(IV) in 3-4 M HNO3 solutions. The sorption capacities of Th (IV) by nBu-POPhen/XAD-7 and iBu-POPhen/XAD-7 (around 25 % ligand loading) were 167.5 and 161.4 mg/g respectively at 298 K in 3.0 M HNO3. Dynamic adsorption-stripping experiments, TOC and radiation stability studies further validated the practical application potential of the as-synthesized adsorbents. The sorption mechanism of Th(IV) was deeply elucidated by EDS-STEM, AC-HAADF imaging, XPS survey spectra, EXAFS analysis and DFT theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The effective separation of trivalent actinides from lanthanides is one of key steps to realize the advanced nuclear fuel cycle based on "partitioning-transmutation". However, their effective separation is always one of difficulties in the separation field because of the very similar physical and chemical properties between trivalent actinides and lanthanides. In the separation by solvent extraction, ligands containing soft donor S, N show good performance to separate trivalent actinides from lanthanides. In 1995, Cyanex 301, a commercial reagent, was found to be able to separate trivalent actinides from macro amount of lanthanides, and then the purified product bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid was proven to have remarkable ability to separate actinides from both micro and macro amount of lanthanides. The separation process was studied and demonstrated by hot test. The dominant complex in extraction is of cubic structure with a coordination number of 8. The phenyl, chlorophenyl-substituted compounds had no separation ability, but achieved a good separation performance with the synergistic extraction of neutral extractants such as trialkylphosphate. Recently, o-trifluoromethylphenyl-substituted extractant compound was proven to have an excellent separation performance. Although the improvement in stability is desired and the further investigation into the separation mechanism is needed, dialkyldithiophosphinic acids are promising reagents for trivalent actinides/lanthanides separation because of the outstanding separation performance.
Computation-Aided Development of Next-Generation Extractants for Trivalent Actinide and Lanthanide Separation

Abstract:The chemical similarities between trivalent actinides [An(III)] and lanthanides [Ln(III)] present a significant challenge in differentiating and separating them, which is a key step toward closing the nuclear fuel cycle. However, the existing separation approaches commonly suffer from demerits such as inadequate separation factors, limited stripping efficiency, and undesired coextraction. In this study, a novel unsymmetrical phenanthroline-derived amide-triazine (Et-Tol-CyMe4-ATPhen) extractant was first designed and then screened with theoretical computation. Meanwhile, they were successfully synthesized by using a de novo construction method. As expected, Et-Tol-CyMe4-ATPhen exhibited a favorable extraction ability for Am(III) and minimal extraction for Ln(III), thereby achieving an extremely selective An(III)/Ln(III) separation with a separation factor of over 280. Furthermore, Am(III) could be easily and effectively stripped from the loaded phases using dilute nitric acid. The underlying coordination mechanisms were thoroughly elucidated by using 1H NMR, ESI-MS, UV-vis absorption spectrometry, photoluminescence spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This work holds promise for addressing the current challenges in An(III)/Ln(III) separation and represents a pioneering endeavor in developing next-generation extractants from first-principles calculation.
Synthesis of organic phosphinic acids and studies on the relationship between their structure and extraction-separation performance of heavy rare earths from HNO3 solutions

Abstract:Efficient new extractant design relies on systematic structure–property studies. However, systematic structure–property research on extractants of organic phosphinic acids is far from sufficient. To make up for this deficiency, twelve organic phosphinic acid extractants (including nine dialkylphosphinic acids, two dicycloalkylphosphinic acids and one diarylphosphinic acid) were synthesized with free-radical-addition-reaction method and Grignard-reaction method. Reaction rules, advantages and disadvantages of these two methods were discussed respectively. The extraction ability and separation performance of the synthesized organic phosphinic acids for Tm, Yb and Lu from HNO3 solutions were evaluated and compared. For dialkylphosphinic acids the nearer the branched chain moved to P atom, the more reduction generated on the extraction ability. Dialkylphosphinic acids without branched chain in α-C or β-C (e.g. HYY-3, HYY-5, HYY-7 and HYY-9) exhibited strong extraction ability as P507. On the contrary, dialkylphosphinic acids with branched chain in α-C (e.g. HYY-4, HYY-8) and dicyclohexylphosphinic acids exhibited poor extraction ability as Cyanex 272. New compound Di-(2,3-dimethylbutyl)-phosphinic acid (HYY-2) exhibited good extraction ability and separation performance and its separation factors of Lu/Yb, Yb/Tm and Lu/Tm were 1.42, 3.10 and 4.40 respectively, apparently superior to Cyanex 272 (βLu/Yb=1.31, βYb/Tm=3.25, βLu/Tm=4.26).

Abstract:Two short, straight alkyl chain substituted dithiophosphinic acids were investigated as extractant candidates for actinides (An) and lanthanides (Ln) separation. The extraction and separation performance by di-n-pentyl dithiophosphinic acid for Am3+ and Eu3+ was very attracrive and comparable to Cyanex 301. The radiation effect on Am3+ and Eu3+ extraction of di-n-pentyldithiophosphinic acid was investigated. The chemical stability and radiation stability of the two dithiophosphinic acids were also examined. Di-n-pentyldithiophosphinic acid which is of 35% higher gravimetric An loading than purified Cyanex 301 was proven a potential candidate for industrial-scale An and Ln extraction separation.

Abstract:We present the synthesis of (2,3-dimethylbutyl)(2,4,4'-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid as an example to demonstrate a method for the synthesis of high purity nonsymmetric dialkylphosphinic acid extractants. Low toxic sodium hypophosphite was chosen as the phosphorus source to react with olefin A (2,3-dimethyl-1-butene) to generate a monoalkylphosphinic acid intermediate. Amantadine was adopted to remove the dialkylphosphinic acid byproduct, as only the monoalkylphosphinic acid can react with amantadine to form an amantadine∙mono-alkylphosphinic acid salt, while the dialkylphosphinic acid cannot react with amantadine due to its large steric hindrance. The purified monoalkylphosphinic acid was then reacted with olefin B (diisobutylene) to yield nonsymmetric dialkylphosphinic acid (NSDAPA). The unreacted monoalkylphosphinic acid can be easily removed by a simple base-acid post-treatment and other organic impurities can be separated out through the precipitation of the cobalt salt. The structure of the (2,3-dimethylbutyl)(2,4,4'-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid was confirmed by 31P NMR, 1H NMR, ESI-MS, and FT-IR. The purity was determined by a potentiometric titration method, and the results indicate that the purity can exceed 96%.

Abstract:A convenient method was established for the synthesis of bis(ortho-trifluoromethylphenyl) dithiophosphinic acid (o-CF3Ph)2PS2H. The three-step route consisted of reactions of PCl3 with Grignard’s reagent, sulphur and NaHS in turn in liquid phase. The title compound was purified through the formation of ammonium salt (o-CF3Ph)2PS2NH4 and characterized with NMR and HRMS. Both chemical and radiation stability of title compound were examined. The investigation on selective extraction of Am3+ over Eu3+ was carried out from weak acidic aqueous phase with traces amount of radioactive elements 241Am and 152,154Eu. (o-CF3Ph)2PS2H in toluene afforded excellent Am3+ extraction ability, with distribution ratio up to around 150, meanwhile the excellent actinides selectivity was obtained. Such performance indicated the potential application of (o-CF3Ph)2PS2H in selective actinides extraction over lanthanides.

Abstract:The extraction and separation of heavy rare earths is always one of the most challenging unit operations in hydrometallurgy. Research and development of novel efficient extractant is one way to solve this problem. Organophosphinic acid is a good potential extractant. A new method was established for the synthesis of nonsymmetric dialkylphosphinic acid (NSDAPA) (R′R″POOH, R′≠R″), optimized the synthesizing conditions of the key intermediate mono-alkylphosphinic acid and successfully synthesized three novel extractants (n-octyl)(2,4,4′-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, (n-octyl)(cyclohexyl)phosphinic acid and (2,3-dimethylbutyl) (2,4,4′-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid. The extraction ability of the novel extractants was investigated. The structure–property relationship and the separation performance for heavy rare earth couples Er/Y, Y/Ho, Yb/Tm and Lu/Yb were evaluated.

Abstract:To further reveal the extraction model for selective separation of trivalent actinides over lanthanides by dithiophosphinic acids (DPAHs), five representative DPAH ligands with different substituent groups have been synthesized, and their extraction and complexation behaviors toward Am3+/Eu3+ have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The introduction of electron-withdrawing group -CF3 into DPAH ligands is beneficial to their extractability among the five ligands. Slope analyses show that both Am3+ and Eu3+ were extracted as tetra-associated species with DPAH ligands. In addition, the results obtained from luminescence spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and ESI-MS suggest that all of the five DPAHs coordinate with Eu3+ mainly in the form of ML3(HL)(H2O) (L represents deprotonated DPAH). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the thermodynamic parameters illustrate that the extractability of DPAHs is dominated by the deprotonation property of these ligands. Meanwhile, molecular orbital analysis indicates that the unoccupied valence orbitals of Am3+ display a stronger affinity to the sulfur lone electron pair than those of Eu3+, which should be one of the key factors contributing to the excellent selectivity of Am3+ over Eu3+ by DPAH ligands.

Abstract:The separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides is a key step in the sustainable development of nuclear energy, and it is currently mainly realized via liquid–liquid extraction techniques. The underlying mechanism is complicated and remains ambiguous, which hinders the further development of extraction. Herein, to better understand the mechanism of the extraction, the contributing factors for the extraction are discussed (specifically, the sulfur-donating ligand, Cyanex301) by combing molecular dynamics simulations and experiments. This work is expected to contribute to improve our systematic understanding on a molecular scale of the extraction of lanthanides and actinides, and to assist in the extensive studies on the design and optimization of novel ligands with improved performance.

Abstract:The dithiophosphinic acids (HS2PR2) have been used for the selective separation of trivalent actinides (An) from lanthanides (Ln) over the past decades. The substituents on the dithiophosphinic acids dramatically impact the separation performance, but the mechanism is still open for debate. In this work, two dithiophosphinic acids with significantly different An/Ln separation performance, i.e. diphenyl dithiophosphinic acid (HS2PPh2) and bis(ortho-trifluoromethylphenyl) dithiophosphinic acid [HS2P(o-CF3C6H4)2], are employed to understand the substituent effect on the bonding covalency between the S2PR2 anions (R = Ph and o-CF3C6H4) and the uranyl ion by sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in combination with density functional theory calculations. The two UO2(S2PR2)(EtOH) complexes display similar XAS spectra, in which the first pre-edge feature with an intensity of 0.16 is entirely attributed to the transitions from S 1s orbitals to the unoccupied molecular orbitals due to the mixing between U 5f and S 3p orbitals. The Mulliken population analysis indicates that the amount of % S 3p character in these orbitals is essentially identical for the UO2(S2PPh2)2(EtOH) and UO2[S2P(o-CF3C6H4)2]2(EtOH) complexes, which is lower than that in the U 6d-based orbitals. The essentially identical covalency in U—S bonds for the two UO2(S2PR2)2(EtOH) complexes are contradictory to the significantly different An/Ln separation performance of the two dithiophosphinic acids, thus the covalency seems to be unable to account for substituent effects in the An/Ln separation by the dithiophosphinic acids. The results in this work provide valuable insight into the understanding of the mechanism in the An/Ln separation by the dithiophosphinic acids.

Abstract:The selective separation of trivalent americium from lanthanides in a nitric acid medium by a tetradentate ligand, N,N'-diethyl-N,N'-ditolyi-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline (Et-Tol-DAPhen), in an ionic liquid (IL), C(4)mimNTf(2), was studied by batch solvent extraction and spectroscopic approaches. The effect of various parameters such as the contact time, temperature, extractant concentration, and acidity on the extraction of Am3+ and Eu3+ have been evaluated. A significant enhancement in the extraction ability of Et-Tol-DAPhen dissolved in IL was observed as compared to that in molecular diluents under low-acid conditions. The chemical stoichiometry of Am3+ and Eu3+ complexes during extraction was determined to be 1:2 (metal/ligand) by slope analysis of the extraction data. The extraction mechanism of Am3+ and Eu3+ by Et-Tol-DAPhen in IL was determined to be cation exchange on the basis of the effect of nitrate, NTf2-, and C(4)mim(+) ions on extraction. The coordination chemistry of Ln(3+) with the ligand in C(4)mimNTf(2) was studied by spectroscopic titrations, which helped to further identify and confirm the extracted species as well as the extraction mechanism. Results from the present study emphasize the unique role of IL in altering the extraction behavior and suggest that the Et-Tol-DAPhen/IL system has potential applications in trivalent actinide/lanthanide separation under low-acid conditions.

Abstract:Phenanthroline diamide ligands have been widely used in the separation of trivalent actinides and lanthanides, but little research has focused on extractants with asymmetrical substitutes. Two novel asymmetrical phenanthroline-based ligands N-2,N-2,N-9-triethyl-N-9-tolyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide (DE-ET-DAPhen) and N-2-ethyl-N-9,N-9-dioctyl-N-2-tolyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide (DO-ET-DAPhen) were first synthesized in this work, whose extraction ability and complexation mechanism to trivalent actinides [An(III)] and lanthanides [Ln(III)] were systematically investigated. The ligands dissolved in n-octanol exhibit good extraction ability and high selectivity toward Am(III) in acidic solutions. The complexation mechanism of the ligands with Ln(III) in solution and solid state was analyzed using slope analysis, H-1 NMR spectrometric titration, ESI-MS, and calorimetric titration. It is revealed that the ligands complex with Am(III)/Eu(III) with 1:1 stoichiometry. The stability constant (log beta) of the complexation reaction of Eu(III) with DE-ET-DAPhen determined by UV-vis spectrophotometric and calorimetric titration is higher than that of DO-ET-DAPhen, indicating the stronger complexation ability of DE-ET-DAPhen. Meanwhile, the calorimetric titration results show that the complexation process is exothermic with a decreased entropy. The structures of 1:1 complexes of Eu(III) and Nd(III) with DE-ET-DAPhen were analyzed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This work proves that ligands containing asymmetrical functional groups are promising for An(III)/Ln(III) separation, which shows great significance in efficient extractants designed for the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing process.
Separation and Complexation of Trivalent Actinides and Lanthanides by Two Novel Asymmetric N,O-Hybrid Pyridyl Ligands: A Combination of Phosphoryl and Triazinyl Groups

Abstract:Two novel asymmetric hard-soft combined ligands, diphenyl(6-(5,9,9-trimethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,8-methanobenzo-[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl)pyridin-2-yl)phosphine oxide (Ph2-MTP) and butylphenyl(6-(5,9,9-trimethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,8-methanobenzo-[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl)pyridin-2-yl)phosphine oxide (BuPh-MTP), were designed based on the combination of the nature of phosphoryl and triazinyl groups for the selective extraction of trivalent minor actinides from lanthanides. The synthesis of these two ligands and their solvent extraction and complexation behaviors with Am(III) and typical lanthanides were investigated using UV-vis and time-resolved fluorescence spectrophotometry, 1H/31P NMR spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and DFT calculation methods. Solvent extraction experiments showed that both the ligands had strong extraction ability and high selectivity toward Am(III) over Eu(III) from the highly acidic HNO3 solution. The separation factors (SFAm/Eu) of these two ligands ranged from 17 to 26, with the concentrations of HNO3 increasing from 1.0 to 4.0 M. Slope analysis showed that the 3:1 ligand/metal complex was the prevailing species formed during extraction. The formation of the 3:1 ratio of the species of these two ligands with lanthanides was also identified by UV-vis spectrophotometry and single crystallography methods. The stability constants for the formation of the 1:3 complexes of Ph2-MTP and BuPh-MTP with Nd(III) were determined as 7.06 ± 0.015 and 6.67 ± 0.007, respectively. The geometric structures of the 1:3 complexes were clearly illustrated using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique and DFT theoretical calculation. This work provides an effective strategy to design new asymmetric hard-soft mixed actinide extractants by combining two different functional groups in one ligand, and the interaction mechanism between the functional groups and metal ions needs to be further investigated.
Extraction of americium and lanthanides by dialkyldithiophosphinic acid and f-f absorption spectra of the extraction complexes

Abstract:A dialkyldithiophosphinic acid, HBTMPDTP (R2PSSH, R: trimethylpentyl group), has been found to be an effective extractant for separating trivalent americium from lanthanides in nitrate solution. A simple six-stage extraction process can separate >99.99% Am from fission product lanthanides and >99% lanthanides from Am. The f-f absorption spectra of Am3+ and Nd3+ extracted into HBTMPDTP were measured. Red shift of the spectra of sulfur coordinated complexes is obvious. Intensity of hypersensitive absorption peaks increases drastically and some splittings occur. Absorption spectra of different inner coordination configurations were calculated and compared with experimental ones. The most probable inner coordination configuration of Am- and Nd-HBTMPDTP extraction complexes are both 8-sulfur coordinated cubic symmetries. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

Abstract:As a part of the study on the separation of Am(III) from Ln(III) by using dialkyldithiophosphinic acid as extractant, the method of preparing and purifying several dialkyldithiophosphinic acids was studied and the effect of alkyl group structure of dialkyldithiophosphinic acid on separating Am(III) from Ln(III) was investigated. A three-step process under mild conditions which can be easily performed in the laboratory was developed. By the method with diethyl phosphite and alkylhalide as starting materials, five kinds of dialkyldithiophosphinic acid(alkyl = octyl, 1-methylheptyl, 2-ethylhexyl, heptyl and hexyl) were synthesized. With four kinds of dialkyldithiophosphinic acids (IIA) with different alkyl group of C-8(alkyl = n-octyl, 1-methylheptyl, 2-ethylhexyl, 2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) as extractants and toluene as diluent, the dependencies of extracting Am(III) and Ln(III) on pH and extractant concentration were determined. The slopes of 1gD/pH dependencies are close to 3 and the slopes of 1gD/lg[HA] are close to 2. While the organic phases were 0.2 mol/L extractants in toluene and aqueous phase was 1 mol/L NaNO3, the pH(1/2) values of aqueous phase for extracting tracer amount of Am-241 and Eu152+154(III) by Ha with R = n-octyl, 1-methylheptyl, 2-ethylhexyl, 2,4,4-trimethylpentyl are 2.58, 2.63, 2.67, 3.19, and 3.94, 3.99, 4.06, 4.52, respectively; the calculated separation factor (SFAm(III)/Eu(III)) was 9.7 x 10(3), 1.0 x 10(4), 1.0 x 10(4), 9.8 x 10(3), respectively.

Abstract:Separation studies during the past decades have demonstrated that ligands with "soft" donor atoms (e.g., N and S, relative to O) show greater affinity to An(III) over Ln(III) in solvent extraction. Among these ligands for An(III)/Ln(III) separation, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid (HBTMPDTP), the active component of the commercially available Cyanex 301 product, has been found to exhibit exceptionally high selectivity for An(III) over Ln(III). However, effective Ln(III)/An(III) separation in this system can only be achieved under relatively high and narrow pH conditions, thus requiring accurate control of the acidity during the extraction. To cope with this problem, in this work we deliberately select formic acid as a buffer reagent to control and stabilize the pH for An(III)/Ln(III) separation by HBTMPDTP. Both batch extraction and process demonstration experiments were conducted to verify the applicability of the proposed extraction system. In particular, the process testing on 14-stage centrifugal contactors with simulated waste confirms that the pH can be well stabilized, and meanwhile high An(III)/Ln(III) separation factors are maintained. Decontamination factors of Am(III) from Ln(III) as high as 50,000 were achieved. This work has successfully demonstrated the efficiency of An(III)/Ln(III) separation and the robustness of operation in the modified system.
