Abstract:Through field survey on the Taoist figures of stone carving of the Suo,Tang,and Song Dynasties conducted in various parts of Sichuang Province,the author related the Taoist figures with Taoist Classic Docu-ments and texts and Taoist activities.He discussed the status and char-acteristic of the major figures from the aspect of Taoist History of Ideol-ogy and he believed that the existing Taoist figures are almost the im-mortals figures of the Tianshi Taoism.The two conclusions he drew are,first,the most of the Taoist figures were carved in accordance to the Jin Lu Zhai Method;second,the suppliers of the Taoist figures were all the Taoist priests and followers of the Tianshi Taoism.

Abstract:The core concept of Lao-tzu's philosophy has three features-Chong (hollowness),Yuan (deepness) and Zhan (clearness).These features focus on non-confrontational principles being harmonious with Nature and inner peace.In China's history,the application of the grand strategic principle of Lao-tzu,seen in dynasties like West Han,Tang and Northern Song,resulted in two contrasting political outcomes.The principle of ruler-doing-nothing had allowed the people to recover quietly by building a prosperous dynasty.In contrast,it failed to instruct a growing-in-power dynasty to act aggressively,in other words,its answer of desire-restrained policy,would not meet the stronger dynasty's strategic goals.

Abstract:A basic issue in the 20th century Chinese philosophy was to relieve anxiety within the study and establish the legitimacy of Chinese philosophy. This paper shows the situation of the problem in the modern philosophical interpretation of Lao-tse’s Taoism and points out that the approaches and strategies used in Lao-tse’s interpretation will further define the road for Chinese philosophical studies.

Abstract:Mr. Wu Weishan obtained the book "Selects about the Rodin Diary Copies" from his friend in 1992.After reading this book,he made up his mind to continue his art creation.In 2001,Nanjing University school anniversary for a held hundred year,Mr. HSIUNG Pin Min gave his work"Person who serves the people whole-heartedly"to Nanjing University,and invited Wu Weishan to manage the enlargement.After returneing to Nanjing University,Mr. HSIUNG Pin Min and Wu Weishan exchanged the notes of portrait sculpture".Expressive sculpture" which Wu Weishan proposes and fulfills was not only already one kind of artistic creation behavior,but also one kind of cultural shape of the Chinese tradition philosophy and esthetics view,and one kind of mofion which brings honor to the Chinese culture spirit through the artistic innovation .

Abstract:The book "Buddhism Stone Statues in Henan" written by Mr.Wang Jingquan widely indexed those single Buddhism stone statues in Henan,which provide a rich and detailed reference to the academia.According to the author,there were more than twenty pieces of stone Bodhisattva statues of Tang dynasty excavated from the site of Dahai Temple in Xingyang,which were relics from the period of Wu Zetian to the late Tang dynasty.The creation of this collection may be based on the scriptures of "Vimalakirti-Nirdesa-Sutra"Vol.1,which is aimed at build up an ideal Buddhist country and rescued those beings though spreading the Bodhisattva’s cultivation.

Abstract:Tao is a motive force reason to keep the best order universe life,and is a kind of intellingence of exceeding experiences.The ambit of "Wu" for nothing is foundation and prerequisite of appearing the intelligence of exceeding experiences,the intelligence of exceeding experiences which function is vast and profound and infinite limitlessly,will be appeared after reaching the ambit of "Wu".The ambit of "Wu" is the best state of Wushu's sports.For moving of Wushu,it must be a kind of "metaphysical enticement".

Abstract:History of development of Chinese jade carving art is dating back some 8000 years into Neolithic period The development of the ideas of Chinese jade carving, the change of their external forms, reflects the close relationships between reality (the objective world) and the inner world of man. The difference between contemporary and traditional jade carvings lies in the artist’s conscious desire to convey and disseminate his own worldview in society. The purpose of contemporary jade carving does not stop at the description of the traditional image and form by the artist, but also, through embodiment in form, tries to reveal an individual aesthetic perception. Jade carved works, possessing symbolic meaning, have a significant impact on the complex interaction between material and spiritual world of the artist; having a deep, symbolic meaning, these works affect the feelings and spirit of people as well. Tsiu Tsitsing (born in 1979) is the most famous and influential jade sculptor in contemporary China from the end of the 20th century and at the start of the 21st century, his jade articles have a distinct personal style, are original and modern. His works not only contain the thoughts and concepts of Buddhism (Zen-Buddhism), Taoism (Lao-Zhuang philosophy), and Confucianism (literary view) in traditional Chinese culture, but also integrate the concepts and formal language of Western modern art. As the most representative type of his (Tsiu Tsitsing) extensive oeuvre of sculptures, the series of jade carvings of " faceless Buddha" contain profound cultural information. The creative subject by inventing new system of symbolic language creates a new world of jade carving. At the same time, the creative subject re-examines the possibility of the current integration of Chinese traditional culture and Western modern art with the help of this symbol system.

Abstract:The statement that "Tao models itself after nature" was an important thought in Lao Zi,and also a major ideological theme in Buddhist and Taoist disputes during the early Tang Dynasty.In response to Buddhist criticisms Taoism drew up some Buddhist thinking modes and made use of relevant Buddhist important concepts,thus elevating its own interpretations of the statement to a higher level of "stressing Mysterious Metaphysical Learning" and enhancing its theoretical speculation.Meanwhile,Buddhism deepened its explanations of the statement,trying to merge its own ideas with Taoist ideas.

Abstract:Taoism,based on Lao-tse's theory of Tao,is a unique theoretical cultural system with strong vitality and lasting influence.It is an accumulation of the traditions of Taoism culture that last for thousands of years.At present and in the future,we need to understand clearly the status of Taoism as a part of the world's culture.We oppose the western-centric globalization,as well as the arrogance of chauvinism in the eastern world.Taoism is just one facet of multi-culture.It shouldn not be seen as a new cultural pattern that has dominant influence.By applying the thoughts and theory of Taoism to international conversation,the values of our nation could make contribution to the world.Taoism shows great wisdom and remarkable effects in dealing with interpersonal problems and issues between man and himself,which also reflect its unrelenting charm and value in the modern world.

Abstract:The relationship between “expression” and“Tao”is the basic theme in the Chinese literature. During the period of Wei and Jin dynasties, some intellectuals such as Cao Pi and Liu Xie began to establish this relationship, and “Tao” coming from Confucianism became the core of Chinese literature. In Tang dynasty,“Haofang” and “Xionghun” constituted the original style of“Expressing Tao”, and “Tao” became concrete from abstract. So, realistic feature of “Tao” was highlighted after the mid-Tang dynasty. Furthermore, advocacy and practice on the relationship between “expression” and “Tao” laid the foundation for “carrying Tao”thought of neo-Confucianism in Song dynasty.
The Self-restraint of Power:An Interpretation of Laozi’s Philosophy

Abstract:Fundamentally,Laozi’s philosophy is a philosophy of power and contains reflections on the origin,role,and restraint of power. Accordingly,a series of important concepts in his philosophy,such as Dao(道),De(德),Wuwei(无为),Ziran(自然)can be sensibly and appropriately understood only in regard to the power. For instance,Laozi’s Dao and De are actually the Dao and De of a king, which focus on the understanding and use of power. The cosmological Dao simply provides a paradigm for the king in this world to model on,and the relationship between Dao and things lays the foundation for that between king and common people. Laozi’s basic idea concerning the use of power is Rouruo (柔弱),which manifests in the Wuwei of the king and the Ziran of the common people. Wuwei is essentially the self restraint of power and requires the king not to force his own will upon the common people and the world. Under these circumstances,the common people can have larger living space, which is actually the core of the conception of Ziran. Different from the emphasis on love in Confucianism,Laozi’s philosophy exhibits a greater spirit of tolerance.

Abstract:In his masterpiece,Lao Tzu combined his Tao with epistemology.Enlightenment,which refers to the understanding and insight of Tao,is not only Lao Tzu's epistemology,but also the noumenon or its own representation.This combination makes Lao Tzu's Tao is quite different from the metaphysics construction of western ontology,So Lao Tzu's epistemology has some transcendental characteristics,and it is not the same as experience thought or intellectuality thought.

Abstract:Hu Shi used three approaches such as scientism,pragmatism and evolutionism to recognize,understand and explain Lao Zi's Tao. Based on these three approaches,Hu Shi put forward his special and novel viewpoints. For example,he believed that Tao is a kind of hypothesis and a kind of process,which indicates heaven and man are not of the same class. On the other hand,In his recognition and explanation of Lao Zi's Tao exist some misunderstandings. Concretely speaking,In his opinion,Tao hinders the development of science; Tao pays more attention to vacuity but looks down upon reality; and Tao worships the ancient but desalinates the present. Besides,Tao and its virtue are just the empty reputation which can not be confirmed. In conclusion,Hu Shi's recognition,understanding and explanation of Lao Zi's Tao is totally the practice of scientism,and during this process,the humanistic connotations of Lao Zi's Tao are dispelled relentlessly.

Abstract:Fukunaga Mitsuji was one of the pioneers of Taoist studies in Japan.He first appreciated the thought of Laozi and Zhuangzi, then studied the Taoist school of Emperor Huang and Metaphysics of Wei and Jin, and finally involved himself in the field of Taoist studies.Influenced by the Kyoto school, he adopted an empirical approach to study the impact of Chinese Taoism on Japanese Shinto beliefs, tennoism, philosophy and cultural custom in sorting out relevant Chinese and Japanese classical doc-uments through historical narration and cultural comparison.He used a simple study style and pursued the scientific nature of Taoism from the perspective of Chinese and Japanese culture.His creative views on Taoism, though somewhat questioned, played a leading role in the field of Taoist studies in 20th century East Asia.

Abstract:As a scholar in late-Ming and early-Qing Dynasty,Wang fuzhi not only paid attention to the study of Confucian classics, but also made a lot of comments on LAOZI. In the academic system of Wang Fuzhi,on the one hand,he made criticism of LAOZI:he thought that LAOZI theories of light ceremony,judo,self-cultivation are not conducive to the national and individual progress:on the other hand,Wang Fuzhi gradually affirmed the practical significance of LAOZI“static for manic monarch”and“retire after winning merit”and other thoughts. That is to say,he had a certain identity on LAOZI.

Abstract:The so-called of the neo-taoism during the epoch of division between south and north refers to the sorcery among the commoners and that abolish the tradtion of Liu has little to do with the state's sacrificial rites. Then, the thesis clarifies stance of triple tao theory stated in the Scripture of San Tian. Finally, after examining the relationship between the Scripture of San Tian and the Scripture of Profound Taoism, the thesis points out that the unique character of the triple tao theory lies in its concept of regionalism. It is this new concept that lays a reasonable logical foundation for the entire theory.

Abstract:The Dang dynastic statue of Ksitegarbha in Guan Zhong could be divided into three kinds;Buddha -shape, bodhisattva - shape and Samana - shape.During the 7 mid - century to the 8 century,Buddha - shape Ks-iegarbha is the main shape of Ksitegatbha Bodhisattva in Guan Zhong,and its character is the combination of other Buddhas and Bodhisattas.The combination is not found in Buddhism,and it should be a procession that the other belief was secularized and depended in China.It can be said that the Chinese culture erlose that the faith of Ksite-garbha depended to other way,such as focusing on saving hell,finally becoming the domination in nether world and shifting the salvation of Ksitegarbha.

Abstract:As the founder of Taoism, Laocius' aesthetic thoughts have an endogenous meaning for Chinese classical aesthetics and art, which also fundamentally influence the existing forms of ancient Chinese paintings.Specifically, they create the spatial consciousness of "intergeneration of nihility and reality" and pursuit of"shapeless great forms" in terms of spatial morphology , generate the time sense of "taking the ancient time as the source" and artistic interest in "depositing the stale and bringing into the fresh" in terms of time morphology, affect the state pursuit of"stillness as the root, movement from stillness" in terms of situation creation, and establish the color taste of considering"the plain being beautiful, the colorful not valuable" in terms of color presentation.
