Interplay between Collective and Localized Effects of Point Defects on Photoelectrochemical Performance of TiO2 Photoanodes for Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:The study presents a successful modification of anatase TiO2 photoanodes with point defects such as oxygen and titanium vacancies to have both collective and localized effects that boost their photoelectrochemical performance. The improved performance is due to enhanced light absorption, conductivity, and photovoltage, as well as a more negative flat‐band potential and increase in hole flux to the semiconductor–electrolyte interface. Among the various photoanode materials investigated for photoelectrochemical water splitting cells, TiO2 stands out due to its abundance, stability, and favorable valence band edge for water oxidation. In this study, the importance of introducing and combining oxygen and titanium vacancy point defects in anatase TiO2 photoanodes to improve their performance is unveiled, achieving a photocurrent density of 0.73 (±0.015) mA cm−2 at +1.23 VRHE under 100 mW cm−2 of simulated sunlight or 26.4 mA cm−2 at +1.23 VRHE under 100 mW cm−2 of 365 nm light. The characterization by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface photovoltage, and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrates that these oxygen and titanium vacancies can have both collective and localized positive effects on the material, leading to a narrowing of the bandgap, an increase in donor density, and an increase in hydroxyl groups on the surface of TiO2. These result in enhanced light absorption, conductivity, and photovoltage, as well as a more negative flat‐band potential and increase in hole flux to the semiconductor–electrolyte interface. These findings provide valuable insights into the role of point defects in modulating the properties of TiO2 and have important implications for the development of high‐performance TiO2‐based devices.

Oxidative Energy Storage Behavior of a Porous Nanostructured TiO2–Ni(OH)2 Bilayer Photocatalysis System

Abstract:TiO2–Ni(OH)2 bilayer electrodes were prepared by the cathodic electrodeposition of Ni(OH)2 layer on a TiO2/ITO substrate. The porous Ni(OH)2 layers were obtained at relatively high current densities (≥1.0mAcm−2), and the particle size increased with increasing the deposition current density. A porous nanostructured TiO2–Ni(OH)2 bilayer was obtained at a current density of 1.0mAcm−2. The effects of OH− concentration in the electrolyte and surface structure in the Ni(OH)2 layer on storage of the oxidative energy of TiO2 were investigated. In our experimental conditions the oxidative energy storage of an UV-irradiated TiO2 photocatalyst in Ni(OH)2 was obviously enhanced in the electrolyte with 1.0M OH−. The porous nanostructured TiO2–Ni(OH)2 bilayer electrode showed the notably improved oxidative energy storage performance, resulting from its porous structure and nanostructured Ni(OH)2 particles. The TiO2–Ni(OH)2 bilayer electrode during UV irradiation exhibited much higher potentials and larger photocurrent than the TiO2/ITO electrode. The transition from Ni(OH)2 to NiOOH under UV irradiation proceeded in the potential range of −0.5 to −0.2V, much more negative than the Ni(OH)2/NiOOH redox potential. A possible mechanism on the oxidative energy storage of an UV-irradiated TiO2 photocatalyst in Ni(OH)2 was proposed, and the related experimental results were discussed in terms of the suggested model.

Abstract:This study reports on the production of the platinum- and nickel-doped anatase multi-nanoporous thin-film electrodes. These doped electrodes were fabricated from titanium plates by a three-step electrochemical method, which comprises (i) anodization of titanium plates in oxalic acid electrolyte, (ii) electrodeposition of transition metals on the oxide produced, and finally, (iii) re-anodization of the whole assembly in sulfuric acid electrolyte, which leads to the production of stable transition metal-doped TiO(2) thin-film electrodes. Some investigations concerning the degradation of a non-biodegradable azo dye (acid red G) in the presence of these electrodes irradiated by artificial UV-light were performed. The degradation of about 92% was obtained at pH 2.1 after 5.0h illumination of acid red G 23ppm using TiO(2) electrode while only about 50% degradation was observed at pH 12.2. The photocatalytic degradation of the dye was strongly favored in acidic solutions. A simplified kinetic study of the degradation of the dye by UV/TiO(2) electrodes system was carried out and the adsorption equilibrium constant (K(ads)), the pseudo-first order rate constant (k), and the degradation rate (r) were evaluated for different electrodes. The ratios of the degradation rates of acid red G 23ppm in respect with the undoped TiO(2) were 2.63, 1.00, and 0.58 using Pt-TiO(2), TiO(2), and Ni-TiO(2), respectively. The photocatalytic efficiency was remarkably enhanced in samples doped with Pt(4+) while the incorporation of Ni(2+) was detrimental to this process. The efficiency of the metal-doped TiO(2) electrodes was explained on the basis of the electroaffinity and the electron work function. The COD removal of about 86.3% was obtained at pH 2.1 after 3.0h illumination of acid red G 7.5ppm using Pt-TiO(2) electrode. The experimental results showed that the reduction of COD removal decreased with increasing pH and the augmentation of the initial concentration of the azo dye.

Abstract:Element doping is effective to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of photoelectrodes, as it can increase the carrier density and then enhance electrical conductivity for efficient charge transfer. In this study, titanium (Ti) was selectively doped into the bottom and/or top layer of the double layered hematite (alpha-Fe2O3/alpha-Fe2O3) nanorod arrays grown on conducive transparent substrate (F:SnO2, FTO) via a two-step hydrothermal method to optimize the electron donor distribution and improve the charge separation efficiency for a remarkable enhancement in PEC water splitting. It was demonstrated that, by selectively doping Ti into the bottom layer, the obtained FTO/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod photoanode showed the highest PEC performance for water splitting, with photocurrent density reaching 1.69 mA/cm(2) at 1.9 V vs. RHE under AM 1.5G illumination, which was 4.3 times that of undoped alpha-Fe2O3/alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod film (0.39 mA/cm(2)) and even much higher than the top layer and double layer doped alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod films (FTO/alpha-Fe2O3/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti and FTO/Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti). By introducing the Ti electron donor dopants into alpha-Fe2O3, the electron density will be increased in the alpha-Fe2O3:Ti layer, raising the Fermi level. For the FTO/Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod film, the band realignment will create a terraced band structure and then build an internal electric field at the interface of the bottom and top layers. As a result, the photoexcited electrons and holes will transfer to the FTO substrate and the photoanode surface, respectively, as driven by the internal electric field. This study demonstrated an alternative approach to the design of novel photoanodes with improved PEC performances, by engineering the electron density distribution and the band structure for efficient charge carrier separation.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO2 NTs) have been widely investigated in the past twenty years due to the variety of possible applications of this material. Indeed, their high surface area and tunable morphology can easily implement key features of TiO2, such as its biocompatibility and photo and electrocatalytic properties. This combination makes TiO2 NTs perfect candidates for multifunctional applications ranging from biomedical application to sensing and energy devices. Herein, we present TiO2 NTs grown by anodic oxidation on top of a titanium foil in an ethylene glycol based electrolyte with NH4F. The as‐grown amorphous nanotubes were then subjected to annealing in a reducing atmosphere at different temperatures while maintaining their amorphicity. The morphological, physico‐chemical and electronic properties were then thoroughly evaluated to assess their use in different fields, from energy storage devices to photocatalytical applications
