Abstract:Parthenocarpy is an important agricultural trait that not only produces seedless fruits, but also increases the rate of the fruit set under adverse environmental conditions. The study of parthenocarpy in Cucurbitaceae crops has considerable implications for cultivar improvement. This article provides a comprehensive review of relevant studies on the parthenocarpic traits of several major Cucurbitaceae crops and offers a perspective on future developments and research directions.
Analysis of the Genetic Effects on the Trait of Seed Amino Acid Content in Crops

Abstract:The progresses of both the traditional and recent studies on the genetic effects on the content of seed amino acids were reviewed.One of the most important objectives in plant quality breeding is to increase the amino acid content in crop seeds.The trait of seed amino acid content was thought to be controlled by multiple genes.In the previous studies,the methods of generation average or additive-dominant genetic model were utilized to analyze the genetic effects on this trait,and the results showed that the genetic mechanisms controlling the content of amino acids in seeds were quite different among crops.Recently,much complex quantitative genetic models and statistical methods were used,and the results indicated that the content of seed amino acids was regulated not only by the triploid endosperms(diploid embryo),cytoplasm,and the genetic main effects of diploid maternal plants,but also by the GE interaction effects,though the extent to which was different among these effects.

Abstract:A genetic model for quantitative traits of seeds in diploid plants was applied to estimate the genetic main effects and genotype × environment (GE) interaction effects for protein content (PC) of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) by using 2 years of experimental data with a diallel mating design of 8 parents. Results showed that PC of rapeseed was simultaneously controlled by genetic effects of embryo, cytoplasm, and maternal plant, of which the maternal genetic effects were most important, followed by embryo and cytoplasmic genetic effects. Therefore, improvement of PC of rapeseed would be more efficient when selection is based on maternal plants than that on single seeds. Since the GE interaction effects accounted for about 60.10% of total genetic effect, they were more important than the genetic main effects, and selection for PC might be influenced by environmental conditions. The total narrow-sense heritability for PC was 64.17%, of which the interaction heritability was larger than the general heritability. Selection for improving PC can therefore be conducted in early generations. Maternal heritability (41.59%) was most important for PC, followed by cytoplasmic heritability (17.62%) and then by embryo heritability (5.25%). Based on prediction of genetic effects, parent Youcai 601 was better than others for increasing PC in rapeseed breeding.

Abstract:Parthenocarpy, the natural or artificial induced fruit production without fertilization of ovules, confers various agricultural benefits, such as stable crop production in fluctuating environments, as well as increased fruit quality and shelf-life of some fleshy fruits. Whereas, phytohormones are known as important mediators of the fertilization-independent fruiting. Here, diploid parthenocarpic watermelon was produced by pollination with partially functional pollen, which was irradiated with soft-X-rays. Ovule transcriptome analyses demonstrated both irradiated and normal pollen induced complex hormone-regulation during fruit-set, and quick response of auxin signaling and downstream network may be crucial for fruit-set. Dynamic investigation of phytohormones in fertilized ovaries suggested soft-X-irradiated pollen induced the accumulation of gibberellins (GAs), cytokinins (CKs) and auxin as normal pollen did. Exogenous application of hormones or inhibitors suggested auxin may specifically act in fruit-set, whereas GAs is insufficient to induce parthenocarpy but function in fruit-growth stage. Single treatment of 1-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-3-phenylurea (CPPU, an active CK) could induce parthenocarpic fruit-set and subsequent growth, which might partly dependent on induced auxin accumulation in fruits. Our results will contribute to the potential breeding of vegetative (autonomous) parthenocarpic watermelon cultivar via genetic engineering, as well as provide useful insights into the mechanisms underlying parthenocarpy in cucurbit crops.

Abstract:The morphological characteristics of pistil and embryogenesis of Chinese plum cultivar Zuili were studied for clari-fying the reason of poor fruit setting with respect to reproductive biologically. Materials were dehydrated, embedded and cut in Paraffin wax. The results were as follows: The style is stuffed; two ovules are contained in the ovary; the ovule was anat-ropous,biteguminous and tenuinucellate. The embryo sac was staying at the 2 to 4 nucleis stage and on the 3rd day after an-thesis reached to the early 8 nucleis stage. The development of the embryo sacs was of polygonum type. The first division of the zygote took place after a dormancy of 2 to 3 days. The development of endosperm conforms to the nuclear type. The pri-mary endosperm nucleus began to divide on the 7th days after anthesis. The globular embryo stage began on 12th day after anthesis. Degeneration of nucellar cells and integument at early stage and abnormal embryo sac structure at mature stage was observed during the development of embryo.

Development of selective markers linked to a major QTL for parthenocarpy in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)

Abstract:Parthenocarpy, the ability to set fruits without pollination, is a useful trait for setting fruit under unfavorable conditions. To identify the loci controlling parthenocarpy in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), we constructed linkage maps by using co-dominant simple sequence repeat and single nucleotide polymorphism markers in F(2) populations derived from intraspecific crosses between two non-parthenocarpic lines (LS1934 and Nakate-Shinkuro) and a parthenocarpic line (AE-P03). Total map distances were 1,414.6 cM (ALF2: LS1934 x AE-P03) and 1,153.8 cM (NAF2: Nakate-Shinkuro x AE-P03), respectively. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses revealed two QTLs on chromosomes 3 and 8, which we denoted as Controlling parthenocarpy3.1 (Cop3.1) and Cop8.1, respectively. The percentage of phenotypic variance explained (PVE) of Cop3.1 was 6.3% in ALF2 (LOD = 4.2) and 10.6% in NAF2 (LOD = 3.0). The PVE of Cop8.1 was 45.7% in ALF2 (LOD = 23.8) and 29.7% in NAF2 (LOD = 7.9). Using a population of backcross inbred lines, we confirmed the effect of Cop8.1, but there was no evidence to support the contribution of Cop3.1. We need to verify the effect of Cop3.1 under various temperature conditions. In addition, we clarified the effectiveness of selective SSR markers, emf21H22 and emh11J10, mapped on each side of Cop8.1 in other F(2) populations derived from various parental combinations. This is the first report concerning QTL analysis of parthenocarpy in eggplant using molecular markers. It will be useful in marker-assisted selection and in revealing the genomic mechanism underlying parthenocarpy in eggplant.

Abstract:Research advances in genetics and breeding of tea in 2011 were reviewed. Useful tea germplasms were transformed into productivity through close association of germplasms collection and application. Studies on DNA markers and gene cloning were hot spots in the basic research field. Chemical and morphological identifications were major techniques for appraising quality potential of tea cuhivars. Quality and productivity efficiency were promoted by close combination of good agricultural practices and well-bred tea eultivars. Ecological adoptability of tea cultivars was the focus of attention. Some new tea cultivars were released in this year.

Abstract:This paper compared the methods of anther and microspore-isolated cultures in Chinese cabbage.The results showed that the difference of genotype between varieties was the key factor affecting production of the pollen embryo.The embryo inducement efficiency of microspore-isolated culture was 10 times greater than that of pollen culture.But the regeneration rate of pollen plants of microspore-isolated culture was much lower than that of pollen culture.Many key techniques of microspore-isolated culture should be improved in order to widely apply to breeding work.

Abstract:Eggplant is the fifth economically most important vegetable in the Solanaceae family after tomato, potato, chili, and tobacco. Apart from the well-cultivated brinjal or aubergine eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), two other underutilized eggplant species, the African eggplant (S. macrocarpon L.) and the scarlet eggplant (S. aethiopicum L.), were also cultivated with local importance where the leaves and fruits are used for food and medicinal purposes. The major objectives of the eggplant breeding program are to improve fruit quality, increase yield performance through heterosis breeding, and introduce pest and disease resistances from wild relatives. Europe and Asia hold a wide collection of germplasm resources with significant potential for genetic improvement. While cultivated eggplant is susceptible to several fungi and bacteria, many wild relatives offer potential resistance to these pathogens. In this paper, we review the genetic resources and diversity of cultivated eggplant and its wild relatives. As a point of departure, we examine the economic importance, domestication, taxonomy characterization, and relationships of the crop and its wild relatives. The importance of evaluating and safeguarding wild relatives is highlighted, as crop wild relatives are highly underrepresented. A key section in this study is an overview dedicated to genetic resources, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, pre-breeding, and breeding for sustainable eggplant production.
A Compendium for Novel Marker-Based Breeding Strategies in Eggplant

Abstract:The worldwide production of eggplant is estimated at about 58 Mt, with China, India and Egypt being the major producing countries. Breeding efforts in the species have mainly focused on increasing productivity, abiotic and biotic tolerance/resistance, shelf-life, the content of health-promoting metabolites in the fruit rather than decreasing the content of anti-nutritional compounds in the fruit. From the literature, we collected information on mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting eggplant's traits following a biparental or multi-parent approach as well as genome-wide association (GWA) studies. The positions of QTLs were lifted according to the eggplant reference line (v4.1) and more than 700 QTLs were identified, here organized into 180 quantitative genomic regions (QGRs). Our findings thus provide a tool to: (i) determine the best donor genotypes for specific traits; (ii) narrow down QTL regions affecting a trait by combining information from different populations; (iii) pinpoint potential candidate genes.

Abstract:KEY MESSAGE:Molecular breeding of Cucumis sativus L. is based on traditional breeding techniques and modern biological breeding in China. There are opportunities for further breeding improvement by molecular design breeding and the automation of phenotyping technology using untapped sources of genetic diversity. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is an important vegetable cultivated worldwide. It bears fruits of light fragrance, and crisp texture with high nutrition. China is the largest producer and consumer of cucumber, accounting for 70% of the world's total production. With increasing consumption demand, the production of Cucurbitaceae crops has been increasing yearly. Thus, new cultivars that can produce high-quality cucumber with high yield and easy cultivation are in need. Conventional genetic breeding has played an essential role in cucumber cultivar innovation over the past decades. However, its progress is slow due to the long breeding period, and difficulty in selecting stable genetic characters or genotypes, prompting researchers to apply molecular biotechnologies in cucumber breeding. Here, we first summarize the achievements of conventional cucumber breeding such as crossing and mutagenesis, and then focus on the current status of molecular breeding of cucumber in China, including the progress and achievements on cucumber genomics, molecular mechanism underlying important agronomic traits, and also on the creation of high-quality multi-resistant germplasm resources, new variety breeding and ecological breeding. Future development trends and prospects of cucumber molecular breeding in China are also discussed.

Abstract:Since the 20th century 90's,genetic engineering technology has been used to cultivate new cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.)variety.To certain extent this has broken the reproductive isolation between bioses and made cucumber breeding with clearer objectives.At the same time,it has also solved problems existing in traditional cucumber breeding,such as longer cycle,narrow germplasm resources and lack of germplasm resources with useful characteristics.This review summarized the progress made in transgenic cucumber,such as disease-tolerance,insect-tolerance,stress-tolerance,quality,herbicide tolerance,parthenocarpic fruits and yield,etc.It also discussed about the huge commercial potential in cucumber,pointed out the aims of transgenic cucumber in recent years.This review also focused on other issues like biology safety and commercialization of transgenic cucumber.It carries out discussion on transgenic cucumber food and bio-safety strategy.
