Abstract:Natural benzophenones are a class of compounds consisting of more than 300 members, which exhibit great structural diversity and bioactive properties. Many benzophenones have been reported from higher plants or fungi, most with polyisoprenylated benzophenone skeletons, and are mainly found in the Clusiaceae (formerly Guttiferae) family, a number from edible or medicinal species. Owing to their variable substituents and complex ring systems, many new polyisoprenylated benzophenones (PPBS), including ones with unusual skeletons, were isolated and identified. These natural benzophenones exhibit a range of biological activities including antifungal, anti-HIV, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral and cytotoxic. Because of the increased numbers and biological importance of these unique natural product polyphenols, we will review natural benzophenones and provide an in-depth discussion of their structural diversity and biological activity. By focusing on these key developments in benzophenones, we will contribute a focused review, selecting examples mostly from the last 15 years, but extending our scope to other historically important benzophenones discovered prior to that time.

Abstract:Indole is a heterocyclic compound formed by the fusion of a benzene ring and pyrrole ring, which has rich biological activity. Many indole-containing compounds have been sold on the market due to their excellent pharmacological activity. For example, vincristine and reserpine have been widely used in clinical practice. The diverse structures and biological activities of natural products provide abundant resources for the development of new drugs. Therefore, this review classifies natural products by structure, and summarizes the research progress of indole-containing natural product derivatives, their biological activities, structure-activity relationship and research mechanism which has been studied in the past 13 years, so as to provide a basis for the development of new drug development.

Abstract:Phenolic compounds are the most important group of secondary metabolites widely distributed in plants,playing important roles in diverse physiological processes such as plant quality,coloring,flavor and stress resistance.The natural antioxidant activities of phenolic compounds become a hot spot in terms of research and utilization at present.In this review,the structural characterization,distribution,composition and diverse functions of phenolic compounds in plants and human bodies were summarized,and the preparation methods and progress in phenolic compounds biosynthesis genes and their regulation modes were concluded as well in order to elucidate the physiological,nutritional and antioxidant functions of different phenolic compounds in plants and human.

Over the past years, significant efforts have been made not only to isolate the novel structural analogs of benzocoumarins with prominent bioactivities but also to design new synthetic methods to synthesize benzocoumarins with better or novel biological properties. The aim of this review is to provide the readers with an overview of the research progress of benzocoumarins from 1953 to May 2014, covering its isolation, synthesis, and biological activities.

Abstract:Natural stilbenes have been a hot research topic due to their intricate structures and diverse biological activities. Although their molecular backbone consists only of 1,2-diphenylethylene units, stilbenes show an enormous diversity with regard to the different units present, the degree of polymerisation, and the pattern of oligomer construction. From January 1995 to the end of 2008, more than 400 new naturally occurring stilbenes were isolated and identified, and this review focuses on their structural diversity, distribution, and bioactivity.

Abstract:Phenazine natural products are a class of colored nitrogen-containing heterocycles produced by various microorganisms mainly originating from marine and terrestrial sources. The tricyclic ring molecules show various chemical structures and the decorating groups dedicate extensive pharmacological activities, including antimicrobial, anticancer, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, and insecticidal. These secondary metabolites provide natural materials for screening and developing medicinal compounds in the field of medicine and agriculture due to biological activities. The review presents a systematic summary of the literature on natural phenazines in the past decade, including over 150 compounds, such as hydroxylated, O-methylated, N-methylated, N-oxide, terpenoid, halogenated, glycosylated phenazines, saphenic acid derivatives, and other phenazine derivatives, along with their characterized antimicrobial and anticancer activities. This review may provide guidance for the investigation of phenazines in the future.

Abstract:Tetrapyrrole compounds play vital roles in the life processes of animals and plants, such as respiration and photosynthesis, due to their functions in light energy capture and transmission, signal transduction, and binding and transport of oxygen, and their research originated from the study of heme and chlorophyll chemistry. The special structure of tetrapyrrole determines its various properties, which contribute to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antibacterial, neuroprotective and other biological activities. Although many functions of tetrapyrrole compounds have been excavated and utilized, there is a lack of a complete system to summarize them. This review summarizes the biosynthesis, functional evolution, biomedical applications and optical applications of tetrapyrrole compounds based on existing research on tetrapyrrole compounds.

Abstract:Bacterial polycyclic xanthone natural products (BPXNPs) are a growing family of natural xanthones featuring a pentangular architecture with various modifications to the tricyclic xanthone chromophore. Their structural diversities and various activities have fueled biosynthetic and chemical synthetic studies. Moreover, their more potent activities than the clinically used drugs make them potential candidates for the treatment of diseases. Future unraveling of structure activity relationships (SARs) will provide new options for the (bio)-synthesis of drug analogues with higher activities. This review summarizes the isolation, structural elucidation and biological activities and more importantly, the recent strategies for the microbial biosynthesis and chemical synthesis of BPXNPs. Regarding their biosynthesis, we discuss the recent progress in enzymes that synthesize tricyclic xanthone, the protein candidates for structural moieties (methylene dioxygen bridge and nitrogen heterocycle), tailoring enzymes for methylation and halogenation. The chemical synthesis part summarizes the recent methodology for the division synthesis and coupling construction of achiral molecular skeletons. Ultimately, perspectives on the biosynthetic study of BPXNPs are discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, traditional Chinese medicines and active natural ingredients have been increasingly recognized for their medication effect worldwide. Phenanthrene derivatives, one of the main active ingredients in many Chinese herbal medicines such as Dendrobium, Bletilla, Juncaceae, have achieved great attention by botanists, biologists, and pharmacists due to their chemical structural diversity and practical biological activities. Nearly 200 natural phenanthrene compounds found from natural Chinese medicine plants are discussed in this review. Plants in the Orchidaceae, Juncaceae, Dioscoreaceae, and Lauraceae families, among others, produce phenanthrene chemicals. Furthermore, their medicinal effects and mechanisms of action are summarized, emphasizing anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-cancer, and anti-oxidative activities. It provides a foundation for further exploring and developing new drugs with phenanthrene compounds as the essential core structure.

These constituents can be categorized as organic acids, volatile oils, coumarins, steroids, glycosides, alkaloids, carbohydrates, phytochromes, etc., all of which play important roles in the fields of pharmaceuticals, food, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics. The study of extraction and chemical composition analysis of natural products is important for the discovery of these active ingredients and their precursors. Abstract:Spirobisnaphthalenes (spirodioxynaphthalenes) are one class of highly oxidized natural products in which two naphthalenes are connected by spiroketal or binaphthalene spiroether. Because of their novel and complex structures, multi-chiral centers and broad bioactivities, synthetic chemists paid a lot of attention to this type of compounds in recent years. The new research progresses of spirobisnaphthalene natural products after 2010 are reviewed based on the results in our laboratory, including 62 new chemical structures, total synthesis and modification, biosynthetic pathway, bioactivities and structure-activity relationships of spirobisnaphthalenes. The objective is to promote the creation of novel drugs and agrochemicals by lead discovery and modification of natural products in China.
