Abstract:The loneliness and isolation experienced by older women have frequently been the focus of Brookner's writing. Fraud, one of her typical novels, provided a provocative perspective on age and gender. In light of a number of previous studies, this article aims to contribute to the study of feminist fiction that focuses on older women and to encourage more academic inquiry and study in this area. Based on the method of literature research and detailed reading of Fraud, the essay demonstrated the dual gaze that Anna, the protagonist of Fraud, experienced from both sexes, particularly from her mother and Lawrence Halliday, in accordance with the gaze theory. The gaze showed exterior control in Anna as well as how she internalized those gaze and molded herself into the object of others’ sight. Though she was observed by others and lived by their expectations for half of her life, Anna "counter-gazed" the overall look in her own unique way. She was liberated from the ongoing fraud thanks to her anorexia, dreams, straight look, and clothing design. Finally, the once-submissive Anna developed into an independent woman, speaking up forcefully for women to follow their own aspirations. By examining the gaze and anti-gaze that Anna experienced, the essay empowers all older women to recognize that new routes are open to them and inspires all women to confront the oppressive gaze and live their lives to the fullest.

Abstract:In the dream and its interpretation, psychoanalysis, in its founding period around 1900, identified the "royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious in the psychic life." But already in the development of Freud's work itself, the dream lost its central position: As early as in the 1920s, psychoanalysis ceased to be a theory and practice defined by dream interpretation—a caesura in a process which completed itself in 1950. Two further developments proved, up to the present day, particularly momentous for the conception of the dream: Melanie Klein's development of the concept of "unconscious phantasy" and the extension of psychoanalytic treatment to psychosis, originally declared inaccessible to psychoanalytic therapy by Freud. This article draws an itinerary of this path and the subsequent fundamental changes in the psychoanalytic reflection on the dream affecting the whole of psychoanalysis until today, by casting spotlights on essential stations: conceptions of the dream developed by Hanna Segal and Wilfred Bion, the latter's theory perpetuating Freud's dream theory as well as it conceptualizes dreams, dreaming, and thinking in a fundamentally new way.

Abstract:"With a few symbols a dream can define the whole of one's life, and warn us of the future, too" (Schlueter 71).In this extract from an interview by Jonah Raskin in 1969, Doris Lessing explained the importance of dreams in her major work, The Golden Notebook; but it could just as easily be applied to a large part of her extensive novelistic corpus. Throughout her diverse literary output, Lessing uses traditional narrative methods such as tales and fables "as a creative vehicle to examine the states of consciousness of the human soul" (Galin 23). Through use of all these fantastic elements, she endows several of her novels, such as The Fifth Child (1988), with a dreamlike atmosphere in which reality and imagination merge. If dreams can define one's entire life, they will also provide the clues to one's own identity, illuminating areas that we do not have access to in conscious life. Identity is a major issue in the novels of Doris Lessing, especially those dealing with female protagonists trying to define their own selves amongst the different roles they perform in life. The subconscious, through dreams and imagination, plays an important part in this quest, since a person's identity is built up by both conscious factors and subconscious forces.The aim of this paper is to show how Doris Lessing's The Fifth Child can be read as a valid representation of a failure in the construction of identity; the novel dramatises the way in which the dreams and fantasies of the subconscious can destroy or fatally interrupt the identity-building process. The Fifth Child, which is described by Jones in the New York Review of Books as "a horror story of maternity and the nightmare of social collapse" (30-31), combines dreaming, imagination and a sense of female identity which is endangered and comes close to disappearing. A closer look into The Fifth Child and its multi-layered treatment of identity as a form of troubled self-creation will help us to appreciate its integral role in the Lessing canon.
The narrative and rhetoric of dreams: six literary fragments by a novelist

Abstract:Four of a novelist's dreams and two contemporaneous pieces of her fiction are examined through the lens of poststructuralism; thus viewed they display narrative coherence in form and content, a reciprocal interaction between dream and written day residue, and a rhetorical function in trauma resolution. Lacan's theories about the linguistic nature of the unconscious are particularly powerful in understanding these six works especially their recourse to figurative language in deconstructing and reconstructing the traumatized self. Dream narratology suggests the close relation of unconscious processes to creativity and the unity of storymaking and personal meaning. Narrative conventions in these dreams and related fiction illustrate the functions of metaphor and metonymy in traversing Lacan's "registers of experience" and his ideas about the "itinerary of the signifier," the way dreams and art capture the elusive object of desire. Creativity serves not only a wish-fulfillment function but also a self-fulfillment function. Dreams, then, as creative acts, claim a privilege unto themselves and support Lacan's argument for a therapeutic approach of "desirelessness."

Abstract:Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytical theories can be used with reference to the analysis of literary works. Reading novels, poems and other compositions through the lens of psychoanalysis gives the opportunity to analyse and evaluate these works in their genesis and functioning. In this article, the main character of Madame Bovary, Emma, is analysed with reference to Freud theories concerning the tripartite structure of the mind (Id, Ego and Superego) along with the Oedipus complex, sexual drives and the analysis of her hysterical personality. The method used for this purpose is the textoanalysis created by a French professor, Jean Bellemin-Noël: several passages from Flaubert’s work are highlighted and discussed according to psychoanalytical theories and with a focus on the social role of women in the 19th century.

Abstract:Sigmund Freud formulated the theory of “Oedipus Complex”, Erich Newmann came forth with “The Great Mother or the Magna Mater” based on Carl Jung’s Theory of the Archetype and the Mother Complex, which charts the mental processes of women’s psychological development. Two novels are analysed based on the given psychoanalytical theories the first a British novel “Sons and Lovers” by D.H. Lawrence and the other Australian “The Thorn Birds” by Colleen McCullough. Both novels have two brothers who become the focus of their mother’s attention and the overbearing mother’s control clashes with their identities, which results in death or fallout from society. The characters’ personal conflicts reveal encrypted truth.

Abstract:In terms of both the character molding and plot designing or setting arrangement,modern novels written by Chinese female writers have been influenced,to various degrees,by The Dream of the Red Chamber.It is a narrative strategy of the female writers as the weaker sex and is an effective way for winning discourse right and self-confirmation in the male dominated writing context.It is also related to the profound and vivid description of the women in The Dream of the Red Chamber and to the emotional resonance invoked among the female writers.

Abstract:Immigration, exile, and expatriation are all associated with home, identity, nostalgia, memory, and solitude in the modern period. Anita Desai and Bharati Mukherjee are two contemporary Indian English writers in the twenty-first century; they also talked about their psyche through the wife protagonist Dimple and Cry the Peacock protagonist Maya. They are dealing with mental conditions and a feeling of suffrage. Maya's psychological situation is manifested in Cry, the Peacock. Desai's heroine has very well examined the inner world of a woman, her rage, frustration, and the storm raging inside her head and heart. The novelist's interest in Maya's freedom is evident on nearly every page of the narrative. Instead of focusing solely on the exterior, she frequently delves into her primary characters' interior or inner psychology. She is an expert at writing psychological novels. She understands how to delve into the psychic depths of her primary characters, as well as analyze and study their motivations in depth. The novelist is widely regarded as a forerunner in the field of psychoanalytic research. This paper analyses Bharati Mukherjee's novel 'Wife' and Anita Desai’s Cry, the peacock as a tragedy caused by unfulfilled dreams. Dimple, the protagonist of "Wife,' appears from the beginning as a person who lives in an imaginary world, beyond reality; she dreams of a perfect husband and a perfect life, but when her dreams are not fulfilled, she murders her husband, believing that no one will catch her for murder, as she has seen in most serials. The paper focuses on the psychoanalysis study of Dimple and Maya.

Abstract:The works of Ian McEwan are mostly related to violence and ethics, which once brought him the nickname Ian Macabre. Atonement is the ninth work of McEwan. It unfolds through Briony’s sin and atonement. This paper is a brief review of Briony in different periods in the Atonement from the perspective of Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalysis. Abstract:The psychoanalytic reading expands the horizon of literary criticism and explores the state of mind of the characters as well as the author who created them. This article aims to explore the psychological insight into characters and the negative implications of psychological issues. Sigmund Freud was an Austrian psychoanalyst (1856-1939), is well-known for his theory of Id, Ego, and Superego which are the three components that determine the psychological behaviour of the characters. Known as the structural theory of personality, Freud’s theory highlights the significance of innate psychological tensions in shaping actions. As individuals progress from childhood to adulthood, Freud believed that the conflict between their id, ego, and superego evolves. The id is described as the unconscious part of the mind driven by instincts and emotions, while the ego represents rational and realistic thinking. When one is active and awake, one relies on their ego or conscious mind. It is by this mind one expresses their desires, has rational thoughts, and makes decisions. The superego influences the way the conscious works, which is drawn from social orders and cultural codes. These are analyzed through the study of the psychological understanding of characters in the novel, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte published in 1847. As a critic, Margaret Willy writes, that Emily Bronte shows some surprisingly modern psychological insights in Wuthering Heights, showing that the novel is always viewed from a psychoanalytic standpoint and states it as “strikingly modern”. In the psychological analysis, the character Heathcliff illustrates the symbol of the id who remains in the unconscious state of life, Catherine depicts the symbol of the id in her childhood and the symbol of ego in her adolescence, the character Edgar Linton represents the symbol of superego who is an educated gentleman with proper behaviour, morality, civilized and well-cultivated culturally. As a whole, Wuthering Heights reveals the themes of love, desire, revenge, loneliness, independent lifestyle, failure of love, and the cunningness of characters to attain their goal out of their id, ego and superego of characters.

Abstract:Existing criticism of classical short fiction is often confined to the surface text. This may be attributable, among other things, to the following reasons: (1) failing to read the text "closely", (2) overlooking the interaction among different elements of the text, (3) overlooking the relation between the text and its context, (4) overlooking the relation between the text under discussion and other relevant texts. In order to redress these deficiencies, this essay advocates the method of "overall close reading," focusing on three exemplary cases: Mansfield’s "Revelations", Chopin’s "Desirée’s Baby" and Crane’s "An Episode of War". The present study aims to show that through "overall close reading", there may be revealed a hidden subtext which typically forms a sharp contrast with the surface text.

Abstract:Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie (1900) suffered sharp criticism at the very moment of their appearance. Most critics and readers pointed out he depicted something amoral, especially on sexual amorality. Yet, with the development of feminism, a few years later Sister Carrie was appraised as the model of ‘new woman’ of the late 19th century. In the light of Freudian thought, the paper will not only draw attention to the confrontation between desire and morality but also to the effects of human inner mind in the external world in attempt to explore the permanent factors that influence human’s actions.

Abstract:The present author's essay "Narrative Text and Ideology"takes issue with previous interpretations of Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour".That essay has been challenged by a recent essay entitled "Gender Politics or Marriage Bondage".This challenge has led the present author to consider further the relation between Chopin's story and some important aspects of literary interpretation,including(1) how interpretive frameworks predetermine reading;(2)the relation between the themes of a text and those of related texts;and(3)the relation between a literary work and its author as well as cultural context.
