Abstract:In current studies of knowledge at the interface of logic and epistemology, philosophical positions and logical systems lore meet in new ways. In this little piece, a programmatic sequel to van Benthem (2011) and a prequel to Baltag et al. (2015), I add some further perspectives and issues to this mix from dynamic-epistemic logics of information and inquiry. My aim is to show that we can have a yet richer agenda of epistemic themes, and a richer view of the interplay of logic and epistemology, when we make epistemic action a major focus on a par with knowledge or belief per se.

Abstract:Where is logic heading today? There is a general feeling that the discipline is broadening its scope and agenda beyond classical foundational issues, and maybe even a concern that, like Stephen Leacock’s famous horseman, it is ‘riding off madly in all directions’. So, what is the resultant vector? There seem to be two broad answers in circulation today. One is logical pluralism, locating the new scope of logic in charting a wide variety of reasoning styles, often marked by non-classical structural rules of inference. This is the new program that I subscribed to in my work on sub-structural logics around 1990, and it is a powerful movement today. But gradually, I have changed my mind about the crux of what logic should become. I would now say that the main issue is not variety of reasoning styles and notions of consequence, but the variety of informational tasks performed by intelligent interacting agents, of which inference is only one among many, involving observation, memory, questions and answers, dialogue, or general communication. And logical systems should deal with a wide variety of these, making information-carrying events first-class citizens in their set-up. The purpose of this brief paper is to contrast and compare the two approaches, drawing freely on some insights from earlier published papers. In particular, I will argue that logical dynamics sets itself the more ambitious diagnostic goal of explaining why substructural phenomena occur, by ‘deconstructing’ them into classical logic plus an explicit account of the relevant informational events.
An Old Discipline with a New Twist: The Course "Logic in Action".

Abstract:What are the basic logical notions and skills that all beginning students should learn, and that might stay with them as a useful cultural travel kit for their lives, even when an overwhelming majority will not become professional logicians? The course "Logic in Action" http://www.logicinaction.org/ tries to convey the idea that logic is about reasoning but also much more: including information and action, both by individuals and in multi-agent settings, studied by semantic and syntactic tools, and still confirming to the standards of precision of an exact and mathematized discipline. Viewed in this way, modern logic sits at a crossroads of academic disciplines where interesting new developments occur every day. In this light introduction, I explain the main ideas behind the design of the course, which combines predicate logic with various modal logics, and I lightly discuss its current manifestations and dialects in Amsterdam, Beijing and the Bay Area, as well as its future as an EdX pilot course.
Foundational Issues in Logical Dynamics.

Abstract:A healthy field combines two driving forces, extension of coverage and theoretical reflection – and modal logic is no exception. In this talk, we look at some broader theoretical issues raised by recent developments in dynamic logics of information flow, whose main technical feature is the modal study of definable model change. Our pilot system will be public announcement logic PAL, the base calculus of update with hard information. We identify several general themes behind the particulars of its design. These include model-theoretic issues like the balance of expressive power for the static and dynamic components of the language, and learnability results in the form of preservation theorems. But we also discuss PAL’s calculus of reasoning, via correspondence analysis of its axioms as constraints on update functions in domains of inquiry, showing how this leads to two recent extensions: protocol versions where no reduction to the static base language occurs, and substitution-closed core versions of the system. Both moves exemplify more general operations on modal logics. Next, we consider other dynamic-epistemic logics, and amplify on the above themes, while adding some new ones. First, we discuss event models and product update in DEL, a calculus of model construction that shows analogies with process algebra, but also with the epistemic μ–calculus. Then we turn to dynamic logics for belief change under incoming hard and soft information that upgrade plausibility relations without eliminating worlds. We discuss what logical format best captures the generality needed to avoid a jungle of revision policies. In this setting also, we look at the general phenomenon of defining new static modalities by dynamic considerations. While all this broadens our view of single-step model transformations, another conspicuous dimension in current research is the global temporal horizon of a process of inquiry, a conversation, or a game, adding procedural information to local updates. We discuss representation results linking local dynamic and global temporal logics, while also pointing at specific model-theoretic issues arising with concrete processes involving iterated hard or soft announcements, and their limit behavior. Here we link up with modal fixed-point logics, though the general situation is far from clear. As a very concrete instance of merging local and global perspectives, we discuss some recent links between dynamic epistemic logics and formal learning theory, where modal models acquire a new meaning as priors pre-encoding learning methods.

Abstract:Classical logic is about propositions which we can know or believe, and unchanging inferential relationships between them. But inference is first and foremost an activity, for which propositions are merely the input, and the result. In recent years, there has been a growing awareness that various activities of reasoning, evaluation, belief revision, or communication, are themselves typical themes for logical investigation, and that their dynamic structure can be studied explicitly by logical means. 1 For instance, it seems strange to study only the statics of what it means to 'know' a proposition, when knowledge usually results from basic actions of learning that we perform all the time, such as asking a question and getting an answer. Indeed, asking questions and giving answers are just as much logical core activities as drawing conclusions! This line can be extended: the natural dynamic counterpart of static epistemic logic is the theory of arbitrary individual or social learning mechanisms. Similar trajectories from static to dynamic arise when we look at inference in such stages, first as a zero-agent mathematical relationship between static propositions, then as a one-agent activity of drawing conclusions, and finally as a many-agent interactive process of argumentation. This broadening of perspective, sometimes called the 'Dynamic Turn', started around 1980 with work on interpretation procedures for natural language, as well as belief revision in artificial intelligence. Abstract:Statements convey information, by modifying knowledge states of hearers and speakers. This dynamic aspect of communication goes beyond the usual role of logic as a provider of static ‘truth conditions’. But it can be modelled rather nicely in so-called ‘update logics’, which have been developed since the 1980s. These systems provide a fresh look at standard logic, letting the usual models undergo suitable changes as agents absorb the content of successive utterances or messages. This lecture is a brief Whig history of update logics, with an emphasis on many-agent epistemic languages. We discuss straight update, questions and answers, and the delightful complexities of communication under various constraints. We hope to convey the attraction of giving a dynamic twist to wellknown things, such as simple modal models, or basic epistemic formulas.

Abstract:Current dynamic epistemic logics for analyzing effects of informational events often become cumbersome and opaque when common knowledge is added for groups of agents. Still, postconditions involving common knowledge are essential to successful multi-agent communication. We propose new systems that extend the epistemic base language with a new notion of 'relativized common knowledge', in such a way that the resulting full dynamic logic of information flow allows for a compositional analysis of all epistemic postconditions via perspicuous 'reduction axioms'. We also show how such systems can deal with factual alteration, rather than just information change, making them cover a much wider range of realistic events. After a warmup stage of analyzing logics for public announcements, our main technical results are expressivity and completeness theorems for a much richer logic that we call LCC. This is a dynamic epistemic logic whose static base is propositional dynamic logic (PDL), interpreted epistemically. This system is capable of expressing all model-shifting operations with finite action models, while providing a compositional analysis for a wide range of informational events. This makes LCC a serious candidate for a standard in dynamic epistemic logic, as we illustrate by analyzing some complex communication scenarios, including sending successive emails with both 'cc' and 'bcc' lines, and other private announcements to subgroups. Our proofs involve standard modal techniques, combined with a new application of Kleene's theorem on finite automata, as well as new Ehrenfeucht games of model comparison.

Abstract:In recent years, a number of 'dynamic epistemic logics' have been developed for dealing with information, communication, and interaction. This paper is a survey of conceptual issues and open mathematical problems emanating from this development. 1 Logical Dynamics The traditional paradigm of logic is drawing a conclusion from some given premises. But derivation from data already at our disposal is just one way in which information can be obtained. We can also observe new facts, or just ask some better-informed person whom we trust. Concomitantly with all this information flow, our knowledge and beliefs change, and this adaptation process may even be triggered by further cues. Such cognitive actions are of logical interest per se, and their explicit study and its various repercussions has been described as a 'Dynamic Turn' in logic (van Benthem 1996). In particular, relevant actions in this broader setting need not be single-agent tasks such as drawing a conclusion or observing some fact. After all, perhaps the simplest logical scenario for getting or giving information is asking a question. But this essentially involves information flow between two agents, and their mutual epistemic and 'social' interactions as the question is asked and an answer is given. An excellent framework for multi-agent dynamic behaviour in communication is epistemic logic (introduced in Section 2), suitably 'dynamified' by using ideas from the dynamic logic of actions. Section 3 is about the best-explored system of this kind, viz. the dynamic logic of public announcements. Section 4 generalizes this to general dynamic-epistemic logic of actions or events whose observation conveys information. The resulting technical questions here blend into issues about more classical logical systems, which are discussed in Section 5 on first-order and fixed-point logics. But knowledge and ignorance are not the only attitudes of participants in a conversation. They also have beliefs about their current situation and expectations about the future. These are revised as observation and communication take place. Thus, epistemic dynamics runs into belief revision. Section 6 is devoted to links between dynamicepistemic logic and belief revision theory as developed in AI and related areas.

Abstract:Abstract A ‘logical system’ is a complex architecture for analysing one or more styles of reasoning. This paper approaches this notion by example, focussing on current ‘dynamic’ conceptions of logic, as being concerned both with declarative propositions and with cognitive procedures of update, revision, etc. The semantic model proposed for this purpose is a general dynamic logic (inspired by dynamic logic in computer science). We show how this architecture leads to (1) new perspectives on logical constants (essentially, these become invariants in an infinite hierarchy of process simulations), (2) notions of inference (which may be classified via sets of structural rules and corresponding representation theorems) as well as (3) a systematic study of switching mechanisms between static and dynamic levels, effecting a flow of information between short-term and long-term reasoning.

Abstract:Taking a broad historical line, we discuss major aspects of rationality that can be analyzed in a logical and computational perspective. Topics include classical notions from the foundations of computability, insights from the development of computer science and AI, and the richer picture of rationality emerging in current logical studies of agency. We also discuss two challenges. Distributed computing and evolutionary games replace ’high rationality’ by ’low rationality’ in behavior, machine learning defies classical views of representation and inference. Both trigger new logical themes in the study of rationality.

Abstract:Classical epistemic logic describes implicit knowledge of agents about facts and knowledge of other agents based on semantic information. The latter is produced by acts of Observation or communication that are described well by dynamic epistemic logics. What these logics do not describe, however, is how significant information is also produced by acts of inference and key axioms of the system merely postulate "deductive closure. In this paper, we take the view that all information is produced by acts, and hence we also need a dynamic logic of inference steps showing what effort on the part of the agent makes a conclusion explicit knowledge. Strong omniscience properties of agents should be seen not as static idealizations, but as the result of dynamic processes that agents engage in. This raises two questions: (a) how to define suitable information states of agents and matching notions of explicit knowledge, (b) how to define natural processes over these states that generate new explicit knowledge. To this end, we use a static base from the existing awareness literature, extending it into a dynamic system that includes traditional acts of observation, but also adding and dropping formulas from the current 'awareness' set. We give a completeness theorem, and we show how this dynamics updates explicit knowledge. Then we extend our approach to multi-agent scenarios where awareness changes may happen privately. Finally, we mention further directions and related approaches. Our contribution can be seen as a 'dynamification' of existing awareness logics.
Logics for Information Update

Abstract:Logical languages define propositions that describe states of the world, represented by some suitably chosen model. The typical format for this is a semantic truth definition M, s &vDash;&phis; saying that formula &phis; is true at state s of model M. In terms of this schema, one can then define valid reasoning as all steps from formulas to formulas that preserve truth. The usual systems of epistemic logic follow this set-up, and the resulting account of reasoning is useful and well-known. But there is also a limitation to this perspective. It leaves out the 'logical dynamics' of many natural processes, such as communicating information. In that case, the basic phenomena are actions which change information states of speakers and hearers, and the locus of 'meaning' for a proposition is not its static content, but the dynamic change it induces from one model M, viewed as an information state for logical agents, to another: announcing &phis; changes M, s into N, t. One now becomes interested in cognitive actions like informing, questioning, answering - with inference as an important, but by no means the only example. This Dynamic Turn has emerged in many areas: linguistics (Kamp, Heim, Groenendijk & Stokhof), philosophy and AI (Gärdenfors, Harman), computational linguistics (Gross & Sidner, Gabbay, Kempson & Meyer Viol) and computer science (Fagin/Halpern/Moses/Vardi, Abramsky, Reiter). This tutorial presents an overview of update logics for communicative actions. The basic tool is: Hintikka-Kripke models for epistemic languages. The difficult questions are twofold. First, what precise updates are induced by various types of communicative action? One line in the literature has looked at examples of increasing complexity. Models and update procedures are simple for questions/answers, or public announcements, but they get much more complex as communication gets more 'private'. We follow one such line in current research, referring to work by Veltman, Groeneveld & Gerbrandy, and Baltag, Solecki & Moss on information update in conversation and games, whose current challenges include more complex linguistic expressions, defaults and cryptographic communication. This requires building sophisticated models in harmony with the observed phenomena. Our second topic concerns new logical issues in this setting. In a way, all relevant dynamics is contained in existing epistemic logics cum temporal models. But this observation is no more useful than saying we can do most of modern logic inside first-order logic, and all of it inside set theory. Instead, we survey new questions beyond the usual agenda. Examples are: (a) relating model-theoretic to syntactic views of update, (b) (non-)persistence of assertions under update, (c) calculi for short-term dynamic 'local inference', and connections with longer-term 'global inference'.
