Serum Levels of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Children With Kawasaki Disease

Abstract:Objective To evaluate its roles in the mechanisms of Kawasaki's disease(KD),serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)was investigated among children with acute KD.Methods Serum levels of VEGF of 33 patients with acute KD of whom 6 cases were associated with coromary artery lesion(CAL)either pretreated or pro-treated by IVIG+Aspirin,and of 10 febril patients with infection and 10 afebril children without infection were measured by ELISA.Meantime,Peripheral blood neutrophil,C reactive protein(CRP)and serum albumin level of patients in acute phase with KD were determined.Results Serum levels of VEGF in patients with acute KD increased significantly comparing to those febril and afebril patients without KD,even though post-treatment.Patients associated with lower serum albumin got relatively higher VEGF levels than those of patients with normal serum albumin.There was no statistical difference of VEGF levels between patients associated with CAL and those without CAL.Increased VEGF was corelated with higher Peripheral neutrophil and CRP.Conclusion VEGF was involved into the mechanisms of KD which might acts as a causative factor in the acute phase.
