Comparative Study of Plain CT and High Resolution CT in Diagnosis of Sarcroiliitis in Ankylosing Spondylitis

Abstract:Objective To compare the value of plain CT and HRCT in diagnosing sacroiliitis of ankylosing spondylitis(AS).Methods The sacroiliac images of plain CT and HRCT of 82 patients with AS were retrospectively analysed. GE Hispeed spiral CT was used. The slice thickness and space were both 5 mm. High Resolution restruction of bone algorithm was done with the thickness of 1.25 mm and the space of 5 mm.The appearances presented by the two methods were compared and graded .The relationship between them was analyzed with statistics.Results HRCT could certainly prove the diagnosis of sacroiliitis in 9 suspected by plain CT image .HRCT was more accurate in grading AS of grade 0 to Ⅱthan plain CT in 22 joints. While concerning grade Ⅲ and Ⅳ,HRCT and plain CT was similar,namely(P>0.05).Conclusion HRCT is surperior to plain CT in grading,especially in the evaluating early lesions of sacroiliac joint,but for the moderate and serious inflammatory changes of AS, both CT and HRCT are equivalent in the diagnosis of sacroiliitis.
